  9. In Memory of Sir Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal (R.A.) — 88 Years Since 1938

In the early hours of 21st April 1938, Iqbal sat with Javid and little Muneera, holding them close one last time. As Fajr neared, he softly recited:

سرودِ رفتہ باز آید کہ ناید؟
نسیمے از حجاز آید کہ ناید؟
    سرآمد روزگار این فقیرے
دگر داناے راز آید کہ ناید؟

  13. Dr Maqsood Jafri: The Poet Of Seven Languages And One Humanity

Dr Maqsood Jafri: The Poet Of Seven Languages And One Humanity

    By Professor Mohammad Shanazar

The Literary Persona and Intellectual Legacy of Dr Maqsood Jafri

History, like cats, doesn’t engender kittens in abundance, rather it keeps us waiting for centuries and millenniums to give forth and bless the humanity, men and women, of gigantic characters bearing greatness of soul, aptness of heart and loftiness of mind,  who stand upon very high pedestals and maintain communion with both: God and  contemporary world to achieve high futuristic ideals.

I with least hesitation may claim that Dr Maqsood Jafri is one of those stalwarts for whom humanity waits for centuries and I am the most blessed and proud of being his student, in the session 1979-1981, at Gordon College Rawalpindi. He was the most genuine teacher who infused in me inspiration that works as a fuel even today.

Dr Maqsood Jafri has multi-dimensional and multifarious persona like a diamond that reflects a legendary poet, scholar, orator, philosopher and columnist, who rendered his dynamic role and performed contribution to literature and academia with wholeheartedness and all sincerity by chiselling and refining two generations which made him a perennial figure and worth-remembering, even in the unpredictable future. I feel myself the blessed one that I had an opportunity of sipping a drop out of an unfathomable ocean.

Being a man, Dr Maqsood Jafri, he is utterly humanitarian, a man of resilience, his true greatness lies in service to society by overcoming diversity, hurdling odds of the route, impediments between the lofty ideals and the leader. I still remember one sentence that he spoke once in the class, perhaps he himself might have forgotten, “sleep is not necessary to dream.”

He is one of those towering figures who struggled and bridged the gap between life and death that is why he has become a perennial character and edified greatness. He never deliberately sought applause from the contemporary world which candidly indicates he never uncaught the hem of humility and patience and he is well aware of the fact that these are the keys to perpetuity.

He has apt knowledge of several languages: English, Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Punjabi, Kashmiri and Poonchi. His poetry reflects his deep understanding of social justice, freedom and the issue confronted by the contemporary world. It is owing to his literary prowess, he earned the title of “Shair-e- Haft Zaban”, (The Poet of Seven Languages).

His poetry deals with the themes of freedom, justice, moderation, humanity and peace. His poem, “I Smile At Your Chains”, offers a scathing critique of imperialism and hypocrisy. By nature, he is a tireless aspirant for social justice, democracy and righteousness. Intellectual enlightenment is a beacon for the descending generations. His voluminous literary works have been etched in the world’s famous libraries enriching their elegance. He blends traditional forms with the modern realistic themes revealing human emotions through high serious poetic narratives and profundity of human feelings felt and sustained in the hearts with clarity and simplicity of expression, interpreting life as really it exists.

The poetry of Dr Maqsood Jafri has a unique artistic charm and elegance. It contains gravity of thoughts and philosophies. It begins with intellectual pleasure and ends with mystical wisdom. The qualities of tenderness and sadness with high seriousness blend into oneness creating zealous impacts on the reader and engender complete fervent human emotions, the beauty and harshness of nature prevail all times.

The major works of Dr Maqsood Jafri cover a vast amphitheatre of literature in several languages, he has authored 35 books and serious articles on various subjects, including poetry, philosophy, and comparative literature. His book “Chiragh-e-Afkar”, is a collection of columns that showcases his insightful perspectives on society and politics. Besides, his books of poetry in English, Persian and Urdu, the books of his prose in English, on philosophy, literature, Islam, Dr Allama Iqbal, Kashmir, international relations and comparative literature have won the laurels and accolades of appreciation worldwide.

He supports the cause of Kashmir, socially and politically. Kashmiris have  been struggling for freedom for the last seven decades. He speaks in favour of their freedom movement,  showcasing his commitment to the genuine cause and has made the world aware that without resolving the Kashmir issue, the world will keep sitting on the heap of explosives and collision between two nuclear powers may push the world into an atomic war, therefore, it is imperative to the world’s major powers to exert their influence in resolving the serous issue between India and Pakistan.

Dr Maqsood Jafri, is characterized for his intellectual personality, passion for literature and commitment to social justice. He is known for his ability to improve his students and scholars alike. As a professor of English literature, he has taught at several institutions and left indelible marks on the path of scholastic excellence.

  27. Why Pakistan Needs Democracy

    Why Pakistan Needs Democracy

    By Dr Maqsood Jafri

On Facebook wall, there is an opinion of some journalists, who have opined that Islam does not support democracy and it also does not suit Pakistan. Some intellectuals have commented on the stance of theses journalists, who have also strongly stated that democracy has failed in the whole world.

I would briefly like to comment on this serious topic. Instead of rejecting democracy, I would like to say, either democracy does not suit Pakistanis or Pakistanis do not suit democracy. Democracy is not only a political system; it is a culture and a mindset. Communism and monarchy are absolute dictatorships. Has democracy failed in Britain, France, Germany and Canada?

Great British philosopher Bertrand Russell in his book titled “Proposed Roads to Serfdom”, has criticized the Absolutism and dictatorial regimes under Marxian Socialism. Another Austrian-British great economist and philosopher Friedrich Hayek wrote a book in 1944 titled “The Road to Serfdom”. In this book, Hayek unveils the dangers of tyranny and fascism, that inevitably result from government control of economic decisions making through central planning. He further argues that the abandonment of individualism inevitably leads to a loss of freedom, the creation of an oppressive society, the tyranny of a dictator and the serfdom of the individual.

So far as Islam and democracy are concerned, in my book titled “The Message of Islam”, published in New York in 2005 in detail, in a chapter captioned “Political Thought of Islam”, I have shed light on this topic. The Holy Quran while addressing the Holy Prophet (PBUH) in Surah Ale-Imran in verse 259 says:

“Take counsel with them on the conduct of matters.”

Then the Quran in the Surah Shoora in verse 38 says:

“Their way is to counsel among themselves.”

It is about the counselling of the companions of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and a precedent for the Muslims till doomsday. General counselling means an evolutionary process of democracy. These verses clearly state that Islam honours the opinion of people. Islam is a democratic religion.

Once, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) said that his Ummah will never gather on wrong decisions. By saying so, he encouraged the opinion and consensus of the Ummah. The people who want to prove that Islam is not a democratic religion, they are the agents of dictators and monarchs. They serve their masters and misinterpret Islam for their own petty worldly gain.

We must differentiate between Western Democracy and Islamic Democracy. In Western Democracy, the red line of morality is crossed. According to the statement of American president Abraham Lincoln, democracy is the government of the people, by the people, for the people. People are Sovereign power in Western democracy. Parliament can make any law. They can even justify homosexuality. But in Islamic democracy, government is made by the free and fair elections by people, but no law can be made against the Islamic teachings. Forbidden is forbidden and no Islamic parliament can permit the forbidden as permissible. In Islam, Sovereignty lies with Allah.

The founding fathers of Pakistan Dr Allama Iqbal and Quaid-i-Azam supported democracy. There are many speeches and statements of Quaid-i-Azam in the support of democracy. Dr Allama Iqbal in a couplet had said:

سُلطانئ جمہور کا آتا ہے زمانہ

جو نقشِ کُہن تم کو نظر آۓ مٹا دو

    The epoch of the rule of the people has come;
any ancient trace that you see, erase it

In Pakistan, we need reforms to achieve the goal of democracy. The constitution of Pakistan, declares Pakistan as an Islamic state. Islam believes in human freedom, justice, parity, equality and liberty. These goals can’t be achieved without the establishment of a Welfare state.

For the establishment of a welfare state, we need the participation of people in the formation of government. We must accept that at present, in Pakistan, we have Mobocracy, instead of Democracy. There are some prerequisites for democracy. They are education, social justice, parity, equality and economic welfare.

In poor and illiterate communities, democracy can’t function. There should be legal binding for a voter and the candidate. The voter should be, at least a matriculate and the candidate for provisional and national assembly and for senate should be a graduate; otherwise, it will not be a democracy but mobocracy.

We will have to uproot feudalism, regionalism, parochialism, sectarianism and fascism to plant the sapling of democracy. Dictatorship breeds Nazism, military rule, Fascism and Marxist Socialism. Democracy is the only beacon of hope for humanity and we must strive to establish democratic institutions everywhere in the world.

    The epoch of the rule of the people has come;
any ancient trace that you see, erase it
