De Fatimiden
Fatimidisch reliëf (Monastir)Als ik het goed heb geteld, heb ik op deze blog al drieëntwintig keer verwezen naar de Fatimiden, zonder dat ik werkelijk heb uitgelegd wat dat voor Arabische dynastie was. Daar moet toch eens verandering in komen, dus bij dezen – en we beginnen in de zevende eeuw, bij de uitvaart van de profeet Mohammed in 632 na Chr. Het was niet helemaal duidelijk wie hem moest opvolgen, en daarom speelde vanaf dit moment in de islamitische wereld de kwestie van het leiderschap. Na ongeveer zestig jaar ontstond daarover wat duidelijkheid: de meeste moslims aanvaardden het gezag van de kalief van Damascus (later Bagdad) en worden soennieten genoemd, terwijl een (vermoedelijk vrij grote) minderheid liever een afstammeling van Mohammed als leider zag. Die groep heette de sji’a en hun leider wordt aangeduid als de imam.
De sji’a depolitiseerde. Deels was ze met geweld onderdrukt, bijvoorbeeld in de slag bij Kerbala (680), deels was ze zelf verdeeld over de diverse familietakken. De frictie tussen enerzijds de als legitiem ervaren claim op het leiderschap en anderzijds de praktijk, werd opgelost door het idee dat aan het einde der tijden een vermist geraakte imam zou terugkeren.
Ivoorsnijwerk uit Cairo (Louvre, Parijs)Ontstaan van het Fatimidische kalifaat
Begin tiende eeuw was het zo ver. In het westen van het Kalifaat van Bagdad, in wat nu Tunesië en Algerije is, was de macht in handen van de Aghlabiden, die de kalief in naam erkenden en verder hun eigen gang gingen. Helemaal in het westen, in wat nu Kabylië heet, leefden sji’itische Berbers die binnen het half-onafhankelijke Aghlabidische emiraat ook nogal onafhankelijk waren. Profiterend van een Aghlabidische troonswisselingcrisis, wisten de Berbers vanaf 902 hun positie te versterken. In 904 namen ze Sétif; Aghlabidische tegenaanvallen werden afgeslagen; in 909 viel Kairouan.
De Berbers namen het bestuursapparaat van de Aghlabiden over en in het volgende jaar riep hun leider zich uit tot kalief. Eigenlijk heel opmerkelijk, want het kalifaat gold als bij uitstek soennitisch, en deze Berbers waren sji’ieten. Hun leider beweerde via Imam Ali en Fatima af te stammen van Mohammed, presenteerde zich als de uit verborgenheid teruggekeerde imam, liet zich Mahdi noemen en kondigde meteen aan dat mensen zich vergisten als ze dachten dat met de verschijning van de verborgen imam ook de Eindtijd aanbrak. Het was, al met al, een revolutie: een sji’itische kalief, een teruggekeerde imam zonder Eindtijd, sji’ieten met macht en een familie die afstamming van de Profeet claimde.
Ingang van de Fatimidische moskee te MahdiaZo ontstond het Fatimidische Kalifaat, dat al snel een nieuwe hoofdstad bouwde: ontevreden met Kairouan kozen ze voor een stad aan de kust, waarvandaan men naar het oosten wilde uitvaren, richting Egypte en Syrië, en daar voorbij naar Bagdad, om de hele islamitische wereld te verenigen onder één kalief die tevens imam was. De nieuwe hoofdstad heette naar haar stichter Mahdia.
Expansie
Ik ga hier niet alle conflicten beschrijven, maar noem wel dat de claim op het kalifaat als een schok door de islamitische wereld ging. Er was altijd maar één kalief geweest, de soennitische heerser in Bagdad. Nu er een tweede kalief was, konden de leiders van het Emiraat van Córdoba niet achterblijven: Abd al-Rahman III van Córdoba riep zich in 929 uit tot de derde kalief, en bouwde Madinat al-Zahra om ook in architectonisch opzicht niet achter te blijven bij Bagdad en Mahdia (en Constantinopel en andere hoofdsteden). Het kalifaat van Córdoba en het Fatimidische kalifaat van Mahdia vochten in de tiende eeuw met wisselende krijgskansen een Stellvertreterkrieg uit in Marokko.
Fatimidisch kristal (Louvre, Parijs)Tegelijkertijd rondden de Fatimiden de Arabische verovering van Sicilië af, om daarna hun eigenlijke doelen weer centraal te stellen: de verovering van Egypte en Syrië, om daarvandaan op te rukken naar Bagdad. Eerdere pogingen waren mislukt, maar in 969 konden de Fatimiden hun residentie verplaatsen naar een nieuwe hoofdstad: Cairo, wat zoiets betekent als “overwinningsstad”. De Al-Azhar-moskee dateert uit deze jaren.
Met Egypte viel ook het westen van het Arabische Schiereiland in Fatimidische handen, inclusief de heilige steden Mekka en Medina. De verovering van de Levant verliep minder voorspoedig: weliswaar wisten de Fatimidische legers al in 970 Damascus te nemen, maar ze werden teruggeslagen en uiteindelijk was alleen het huidige Palestina Fatimidisch, inclusief de heilige stad Jeruzalem. Hiermee kwam de expansie ten einde. Met de Byzantijnen, die in deze periode hun macht in Syrië uitbreidden, kwam men overeen dat de Nahr al-Kabir (de noordgrens van het huidige Libanon) de grens tussen beide invloedssferen zou vormen.
Fatimidische munt (Residenzschloss, Dresden)Elfde en twaalfde eeuw
Rond het jaar 1000 strekte het Fatimidische Rijk zich uit van Algerije tot Jordanië. Aan het hoofd stond de kalief Al-Hakim over wie ik het al eerder heb gehad – een van de meest fascinerende personages uit de Arabische geschiedenis. Inmiddels begon de geschiedenis zich te herhalen. Zoals de Fatimiden hun macht hadden kunnen uitbreiden vanuit de westelijke periferie, waar de kalief van Bagdad alleen indirect gezag uitoefende, zo breidden nu in de westelijke periferie de Ziriden hun macht uit. Officieel namens de Fatimidische kalief heersten zij over grote delen van de Maghreb, en in de elfde eeuw werden ze feitelijk onafhankelijk.
De afspraak met de Byzantijnen over de afbakening van de wederzijdse invloedssferen garandeerde een eeuw lang een regelmatig onderbroken rust, maar dat veranderde tegen het einde van de elfde eeuw. Een in Anatolië en Syrië opererend huurlingenleger in dienst van keizer Alexios I Komnenos verbrak zijn eed van trouw, stak de Nahr al-Kabir over en rukte op naar Jeruzalem. Het Fatimidische garnizoen wist de aanvallen enige tijd af te slaan, maar de vijanden wisten de stad stormenderhand te veroveren en versloegen even later een Fatimidisch ontzettingsleger. Dat was 1099 en u had al begrepen dat dit huurlingenleger bekendstaat als de Eerste Kruistocht.
Een Fatimidische bokaal uit de Kerkschat van Oignies (Musée des arts anciens, Namen)In de loop van de twaalfde eeuw raakte de dynastie steeds verder verzwakt, deels door interne fricties, deels vanwege het verlies aan prestige. Zwakke kaliefen kregen nogal eens te maken met machtige adviseurs, die zeker niet altijd sji’itisch of zelfs maar islamitisch waren. Uiteindelijk nam een van die adviseurs, de soenniet Saladin, in 1171 de macht over. Met die gebeurtenis raakten Syrië en Egypte voor het eerst in lange tijd in één hand verenigd en raakte het lot van de Kruisvaarders bezegeld. Het betekende ook dat de sji’a voorgoed de kleinere was van de twee hoofdstromingen in de islam.
