  1. Tip #792

Open the Tab Switcher in Vivaldi on iOS with a swipe on the Address Bar.

Whenever you want to get a good overview of all your standard, private, synced, etc. tabs, the Tab Switcher is the place to go.

To enable Address Bar swipe gesture:

    1. Go to Settings > Address Bar > Address Field Options.
    2. Toggle on “Enable Address Bar Swipe Gesture”.

Once the setting is enabled, all you need to do is swipe from the Address Bar towards the page to open the Tab Switcher. In other words, swipe down when the Address Bar is at the top and swipe up when the Address Bar is at the bottom of the screen.

  2. Tip #767

Gain screen real estate by merging Address and Tab Bars.

Whether you’re working on a small laptop screen where every pixel counts or just prefer a more compact look, Vivaldi’s toolbar customisation settings are here to help you achieve a configuration that works for you.

To combine the Address Bar and the Tab Bars, you need to move components from the Address Bar to the Tab Bar. Here’s how!

    1. Open the Toolbar Editor from the main menu > View > Customize Toolbar, or right-click on a component on the toolbars and select Customize Toolbar.
    2. While the icons are wiggling in their place, drag components you regularly use from the Address Bar to the Tab Bar (or to other toolbars).
    3. When you see a line in your theme’s highlight color appear, drop the component to its new place.
    4. When you’re happy with the result, click “Done” in the editor window.
    5. Then, in the main menu > View, click on “Show Address bar” to hide the Address Bar.

  3. Tip #761

Search tabs, bookmarks and history using Shortcuts Nicknames in the Address Field.

In addition to searching for web content with a search engine, you can use the Address Field to search for Bookmarks, open Tabs, and History.

To filter searches in the Address Field:

    1. Type the nickname “bookmarks“, “@tabs“, or “@history” followed by a space in the Address Field.
    2. Then start typing the web page’s title or URL to see relevant results.
    3. Click on the suggestion to go to the web page.

Prefer using Quick Commands? See how to filter searches there in Tip #323.

  4. I have learnt from end users twice in the last month that they don't use the address bar in their browsers. If they cant get to a search engine from their home tab, apparently their browser is useless to them. WTF

  5. Tip #705

Keep your website visits and searches separate by disabling searches in the Address Field.

In Vivaldi, you can compartmentalize what you search for online from the web pages you visit by only allowing going to web links in the Address Field. When searching is disabled in the Address Field, you can search the web by adding a dedicated Search Field to the Address Bar or by using Quick Commands.

To disable searching in the Address Field:

    1. Go to Settings > Search > Search Options.
    2. Disable “Search in Address Field”.

To add the Search Field to the Address Bar:

    1. Go to the main menu > View > Customize Toolbar.
    2. Drag the Search Field next to the Address Field on the Address Bar.

  6. Tip #692

Bring back the Home button when moving the Address Bar to the bottom in Vivaldi on Android.

When you move the Address and Tab Bars to the bottom edge of the screen, the Navigation Bar, together with some useful buttons, will be hidden. For example, the one taking you back to the Start Page. Luckily, there’s a setting in Vivaldi on Android that you can toggle to bring it back.

To add a Home button to the Address Bar:

    1. Go to Settings > Appearance & Theme.
    2. Enable “Show Start Page Icon in Address Bar”.

If you want to open a website instead of the Start Page when tapping on the Home button (and New Tab button), go to Settings > General > Homepage to set the web page link.

  7. depending on the number of extensions the user has installed, the #Extensions button in the #Addressbar coupled with a #responsivedesign design may extend to a width such that display limitations may prevent difficulty with using some buttons.

However, the extensions button itself can be moved from the address bar.

Vivaldi always works nicely once configured to my liking (which can be done).

  8. Tip #613

Try out the different ways you can search open tabs and switch to them.

With amazing tab management features, the Vivaldi browser is a tab hoarder’s paradise. In this tip, we list all the ways you can search for open tabs and switch to them.

    • Start typing the tab’s name or URL in the Address Field and click on “Switch to this Tab” in the Open Tabs section in the Address Field drop-down menu.
    • Open Quick Commands and start typing the tab’s name or URL. In the Tabs section, click on the tab you want to view.
    • Open the Windows Panel and start typing the tab’s name or URL in the search field at the top of the panel. (Double)-click on the tab you want to switch to.

  9. Some seem in , or other too perhaps, on , to hide their url
Is this a setting on my browser or phone or is the site responsible? It means I cannot share the by simple copy and paste. How can I see the URL ?

  10. Tip #571

Turn off Address Field Drop-Down Menu for more private browsing.

Do you often show things on the web to someone sitting next to you and discover yourself thinking that you’d prefer if they couldn’t see your previous searches, history, and more? A great solution for that is to disable the Address Field Drop-Down menu. That way, matching suggestions won’t be displayed as you type a search term or a link in the Address Field.

To disable the Address Field Drop-Down Menu:

    1. Go to Settings > Address Bar > Drop-Down Menu.
    2. Disable “Show Drop-Down when Typing”.

  11. Tip #557

Always know where you are by enabling full address display in Vivaldi on iOS.

By default, the Address Field only displays the domain you’re on (e.g. vivaldi.com) and you have to tap on the Address Field to see the full URL (e.g. https://vivaldi.com/blog/ios).

To see the full URL at all times:

    1. Go to  Vivaldi menu > Settings > Address Bar.
    2. Toggle on Show Full Address.

    https://tips.vivaldi.net/tip-557/

  12. Tip #514

Switch to an existing tab that already has the link open, instead of opening it in a new tab.

It’s easy to end up with more open tabs than you can keep track of. That’s why, when you type a link in the Address Field, Vivaldi will point out that you already have the same URL open in another tab, allowing you to switch to that tab instead of opening a duplicate tab.

To switch to an open tab:

    1. Enter the link in the Address Field.
    2. Instead of just pressing “Enter”, use an arrow key to select the “Switch to this tab” suggestion in the Address Field Drop-Down Menu and then press Enter. Alternatively, click on the suggestion.

  13. Tip #453

If you’ve moved the Address Bar to the bottom on mobile, also reverse the order of search suggestions.

When you’re holding your phone with just one hand, having everything important within easy reach on the screen is vital. That’s why, when you have the Address Bar at the bottom in Vivaldi on Android or iOS, you can bring the most relevant search suggestions closer to the bottom of the screen as well.

To reverse the search suggestions order on Android:

    1. Go to Settings > Appearance.
    2. If you haven’t already, enable “Address Bar At Bottom”.
    3. Toggle on “Reverse search suggestion order”.
    4. Restart the app.

To reverse the search suggestions order on iOS:

    1. Go to Settings > Tabs.
    2. If you haven’t already, select “Bottom” for Address Bar Position.
    3. Toggle on “Reverse search suggestion order”.

  14. Tip #444

Remove individual History entries from the Address Field.

When you type a link or a search term in the Address Field, you’ll see suggestions from Bookmarks, (Typed) History, Synced Tabs, and more in the Address Field drop-down menu and as the auto-completed suggestion. If some (Typed) History suggestions are no longer relevant, you can remove them.

    To delete suggestions from History:

    1. Type something that would bring up the (Typed) History suggestion you want to remove.
    2. Find the entry in the Address Field drop-down menu.
    3. Click on the X that appears on the right side when you hover over the suggestion.

  15. Tip #439

Choose whether to focus on the Address Bar or the Speed Dial in a new tab in Vivaldi on Android.

When you open a new tab, do you usually start typing a website link or a search term in the Address Field, or do you open one of your favorite Speed Dial bookmarks? Vivaldi on Android allows you to choose your preferred option and, depending on your choice, either opens the keyboard, so you can start typing immediately, or keeps it closed so you can view the Speed Dials.

    To review your choice:

    1. Go to Settings > Tabs > Focus Address Bar on New Tab.
    2. Toggle the setting off, if you prefer to see the Speed Dials or leave it enabled, for the keyboard to pop up.

  16. Tip #433

Identify Web Pages that are malicious or legitimate by checking the base domain in the Address Field.

Fraudsters are an unfortunate part of the internet, constantly coming up with more and more ways to scam people. To help you spot malicious actors and prevent scams and phishing attacks, Vivaldi highlights the core part of the URL while the rest of the URL will be visible and lowlighted.

For example, if someone is trying to make you think that you’re on Google’s web page, they may use a link similar to this – www.google.fakesite.com. With base domain highlighting in addresses, the real domain will be highlighted and displayed as www.google.fakesite.com. This way you can recognize which company controls the domain and not fall for the scam.

You do have the option to disable base domain highlighting in Settings > Address Bar > Security Features, but we strongly advise you against doing so.

  17. Tip #408

Top or bottom? Decide where you want to have the Tab Bar and Adress Bar in Vivaldi on iOS.

Prefer your Address Bar and Tab Bar traditionally on top of the screen or at the bottom for easy one handed reach? Whatever your preference, we’ve got you covered.

To choose a location for the Tab and Address Bar:

    1. Go to Settings > Tabs.
    2. Select either Top or Bottom for the Address Bar Position.

Alternatively, long-press on the Address Bar and select “Move address bar to bottom/top” from the menu.

  18. Tip #369

To select the link in the Address Field on activation or not? The choice is yours.

When focusing on the Address Field are you more likely to type in something new or to edit the existing link? By default the current address is selected, so you can start typing a new address or a search term right away, but if you’d rather keep the address in the Address Field to edit it, you can disable automatic address selection.

To update your Address Field preferences:

    1. Go to Settings > Address Bar > Address Field Options.
    2. Disable “Select Address on Activation”.

When disabled, the mouse cursor will be placed where you click in the Address Field.

  19. Tip #339

Reorder Address Field drop-down menu’s categories according to your preferences.

Do you use the Address Field search more for finding an entry in your History than for Bookmarks? Or do you want Frequently Visited Pages to be listed before Search Suggestions? In the Vivaldi browser, you can tailor the drop-down menu according to your needs.

    To reorder the drop-down:

    1. Go to Settings > Address Bar > Drop-Down Menu Priority.
    2. Select a category you want to move.
    3. Using the arrows in the bottom right corner, move the category up or down.

Alternatively, drag and drop the categories to reorder them.

  20. Tip #293

Enable “Show Full Address” to see the complete web page URL without needing to focus on the Address Field.

Looking at the Address Field you may have noticed that you don’t see the full address unless you focus on it. That’s because we want you to easily see the most important parts of the URL – the domain and the path. The protocol in front can give you false security, and parameters and anchors at the end can add so much confusion that it can be hard to see which website you are using.

But if you prefer to see the full address at all times:

    1. Right-click on the Address Field.
    2. Select “Always Show Full Address”.

Alternatively, enable it in Settings > Address Bar > Address Field Options.

  21. Tip #288

Give the Search Field the space it needs by resizing it.

In addition to deciding what elements are displayed on your Vivaldi Browser’s toolbars, you can also adjust the size of some of them, for example, the Search Field on the Address Bar.

    To resize the Search Field:

    1. Hover over the left edge of the Search Field.
    2. Click and drag the mouse left to make it bigger or right to make it smaller.

  22. Want the Android browser to automatically Focus on the Address Bar when opening a new tab? You can!

Enable this by going into Settings > Tabs and select Focus Address Bar on New Tab.

  23. PaleMoon just updated and now my address bar search is back to using whatever engine is in the search bar...I'd rather anything I search for in the address bar use my default search engine (no matter what the search bar is set on). Can anyone help? Or is anyone already on the PM forums and able to ask *for* me? I hate registering to ask 1 question.
