Tip #780
Switch Speed Dials from the right-click menu.
Have you hidden the navigation bar on the Start Page for a more minimalistic look, but still want to access your various Speed Dial groups? Luckily, Vivaldi offers you an alternative navigation option.
To switch Speed Dial groups:
- Right-click on an empty area on the Start Page.
- Click on the Speed Dial group’s name you want to switch to.
-
Tip #769
Make the most of Speed Dials and Widgets by combining them on your Start Page.
The Start Page is for populating it with your favorite and most used bookmarks – Speed Dials. To take it to the next level, you can also add Widgets to each Speed Dial group, creating unique dashboards that meet your browsing needs.
To add a new Speed Dial group:
- Go to the Bookmark Panel or Bookmarks Manager.
- Right-click on a folder and select “Use as Speed Dial”.
To add Widgets to the Speed Dial:
- Go to the Speed Dial group you want to add widgets to.
- Click on “Widget” at the bottom of the page.

Tip#765
Prevent accidental Speed Dial changes by disabling drag and drop.
After having spent time on making your Start Page perfect by rearranging and customizing your Speed Dials, it would be a shame if things got disarranged because you accidentally clicked and dragged a Speed Dial. Luckily, there’s a setting to prevent it from happening.
To disable drag and drop:
- Go to Settings > Start Page > Speed Dial.
- Disable “Allow Drag and Drop Reordering”.
-
Tip #736
Choose the Speed Dial group you want to open the Start Page with.
We all have our preferred workflows and it’s great when the tools you use are able to adapt to that workflow. That’s why in Vivaldi you can choose what gets shown to you when you open the Start Page. Is it always the Speed Dial with your most important bookmarks or is it the one you viewed most recently?
To choose the view the Start Page is opened with:
- Go to Settings > Start Page > Reopen Speed Dial with.
- Select between:
- Last Selected Group,
- First Group (reorder groups using drag and drop on the navigation bar).

Thinking about ditching Vivaldi. It's become too unstable and resource-hungry on Linux.
I need a browser that supports Speed Dial and Workspace. Brave is my secondary browser — solid overall, but it lacks those two feature I really rely on.
Any recommendations?

Tip #689
Hide seldom used buttons on Vivaldi’s Start Page on your mobile for a cleaner look.
While customizing the appearance of the Start Page is fun, you probably don’t do it very often. The same goes for manually adding new Speed Dial bookmarks. If that’s the case, feel free to hide one or both of the buttons in Vivaldi on Android and iOS and use alternative routes on occasions you do need to access these features.
To hide the buttons from the Start Page:
- Tap on the “Customize” button on the Start Page.
Alternatively, go to Settings > Start Page. - Toggle off “Customize Start Page Button” and/or “Show Add Button”.
When these buttons have been hidden, tap on the 3 dot menu in the top right corner of the Start Page and select “Customize Start Page” to access customization settings. To add new Speed Dial bookmarks, select the right Speed Dial folder when adding an open web page as a bookmark or add one manually in the Bookmarks Panel.

Tip #664
Choose which Speed Dial Group to display when going to the Start Page on mobile.
We all have our preferred workflows and it’s great when the tools you use are able to adapt to that workflow. That’s why in Vivaldi on Android and iOS you can choose what gets shown to you when you open the Start Page. Is it the selection of your most visited sites (bookmarked or not), the first group with your most important Speed Dials, or the one you viewed most recently?
To select your preferred Start Page opening view:
- Go to Settings > Start Page > Reopen Start Page with.
- Choose between:
- First Group,
- Top Sites,
- Last Visited Group.
-
Tip #599
Choose whether to open the Start Page with the last viewed Speed Dial Group or with the first one on the list.
Start Page with the Speed Dials and Dashboard is a starting point in every new Vivaldi tab for most people. To make it useful, choose what you want to see.
To make your decision:
- Go to Settings > Start Page > Reopen Speed Dial with.
- Choose between “Last Selected Group” and “First Group”.
If you’re opting for “First Group”, check out this recent tip on reordering your Speed Dial Groups.
-
Tip #595
Put your Speed Dial Groups on the Start Page into the correct order.
Have you added many bookmark folders as Speed Dials on the Start Page, but the order is all wrong, and/or you’d prefer to have the Dashboard as the first page rather than the last? Don’t fret! There’s a super easy way to get them in the correct order.
To reorder your Speed Dial Groups and the Dashboard:
- Click on the group you want to move and start dragging it right or left.
- Using the vertical line as a guideline, drop the group at its new location on the Start Page Navigation bar.
-
Tip #586
Access your most visited web pages on mobile from the Top Sites group on the Start Page.
In addition to Speed Dials, you can have an automatically generated group of your most visited web pages on the Start Page.
To enable Top Sites:
Option 1
- Open a new tab with the Start Page.
- At the bottom of the page or from the 3-dot menu in the top right corner of the Start Page, open “Customize Start Page” settings.
- Toggle on “Display Top Sites”.
Option 2
- Go to Vivaldi Menu > Settings > Start Page.
- Toggle on “Display Top Sites”.
-
Tip #577
Give your Speed Dial folders a personalized look by adding custom thumbnails.
In addition to individual Speed Dial bookmarks, you can add thumbnails to Speed Dial folders (see Tip #69).
To add a custom thumbnail image to a bookmark folder:
Option 1
- Open the Start Page.
- Right-click on a folder and select “Select Custom Thumbnail”.
- Locate the image file you want to use.
- Click “Open”.
Option 2
- Open the Bookmarks Panel or Bookmarks Manager.
- Select the bookmarks folder.
- In the information section (name, nickname, description), hover over the folder icon.
- Click on “Select Custom Thumbnail”.
- Locate the image file you want to use.
- Click “Open”.
The recommended image size is 440×360px and most image formats, including animated GIFs, are supported.
-
Tip #532
Divide your Speed Dials into groups in Vivaldi on Android and iOS.
Just like on desktop (See Tip #101) the same way on mobile, you can have multiple pages of your favorite bookmarks, Speed Dials, on the Start Page.
To create a new Speed Dial page, aka group:
- Swipe left on the Start Page until you see a screen like the one on the image below and tap on the “Add New Group” button.
Alternatively, tap on the 3 dots in the top right corner of the Start Page and select “New Group” from the menu. - Give the group a name.
- Tap “Done”.
- Start adding/moving bookmarks to it.
To add an existing bookmark folder to the Start Page:
- Open the Bookmarks Panel.
- Long-press on the folder you want to add to the Start Page and select “Edit”.
- Toggle on “Use as Group”.
- Tap “Done”.
- Swipe left on the Start Page until you see a screen like the one on the image below and tap on the “Add New Group” button.
-
Tip #530
Play around with different layouts for creative ways to arrange your Speed Dials.
When you have a lot of Speed Dials on your Vivaldi browser’s Start Page, you’ll benefit from spreading them out into more columns, so they’ll all fit on the screen. But if you only have a few favorites, you can get more creative with the layout.
To change the number of columns:
- Go to Settings > Start Page > Speed Dial or open Quick Settings > Speed Dial Appearance on the Start Page.
- From the Maximum Columns drop-down menu, select how many columns of Speed Dials you want. You can have a single column or go in the opposite direction and remove the upper limit altogether.

Tip #475
Add web pages to your Speed Dial for easy access in Vivaldi on Android.
It’s common to add regularly visited sites to one’s Bookmarks, but scouring through the folders in the Bookmarks Panel is tedious. To open your favorite sites with the minimum effort, add them to the Speed Dial. Then, whenever you open a new tab in Vivaldi on Android, they’ll be just one tap away.
To add a website as a Speed Dial bookmark on the Start Page:
- Open the web page in a tab.
- Open the Vivaldi menu and select “Add Bookmark”.
- Tap on “Edit” in the confirmation banner that appears at the bottom of the browser window.
- For the bookmark location select a Speed Dial folder.
- Finish by tapping on “Done” in the top right corner.
-
Tip #458
Drag one Speed Dial bookmark over another to create a new folder.
If you’ve accumulated too many bookmarks on your Speed Dial and want to group them into folders, all you need to do is drag one of the bookmarks, and when the background of the bottom bookmark changes color release the mouse button.
Once the new folder has been created, right-click on the folder to rename it and, if you wish, add a custom thumbnail (see Tip #69).

Tip #439
Choose whether to focus on the Address Bar or the Speed Dial in a new tab in Vivaldi on Android.
When you open a new tab, do you usually start typing a website link or a search term in the Address Field, or do you open one of your favorite Speed Dial bookmarks? Vivaldi on Android allows you to choose your preferred option and, depending on your choice, either opens the keyboard, so you can start typing immediately, or keeps it closed so you can view the Speed Dials.
To review your choice:
- Go to Settings > Tabs > Focus Address Bar on New Tab.
- Toggle the setting off, if you prefer to see the Speed Dials or leave it enabled, for the keyboard to pop up.
