  1. I've been working with VMware for much of the past 20 years, and with Broadcom now...meeeeh. If anything good has come of this situation, I'm forcing myself for the first time to explore XCP-NG, Proxmox, and Xen and KVM in general more seriously. So far I'm really impressed with what XCP-NG has become, and Xen Orchestrator seems to be heading in the right direction.

So, any Fosstodon-ers out there have thoughts and experience on Vates and XCP-NG in general? -ng

  2. I know meant a lot to those who were active there over the years, so it's sad to see it go. I only visited every so often for fun and exploration, and occasionally for professional "meetups" but it was a solid virtual space option.

If something like this can't survive "the Metaverse" I think we're going to be hard pressed to see another version broadly accepted any time soon.

  3. So um, all respect to Liam Hemsworth and everything, but could we maybe...I don't know...get Henry back as Geralt? Maybe? Pretty please?

Although I haven't posted this fancam before, I'm aware that I have posted a number of iterations of "Cliché" previously - so many, that perhaps some will be inclined to think I am posting to live up to the song's title.

    So why this post now?

-- I love the song, and I can't stop celebrating it.

-- The song was part of the set for the 260315 Sakura Festival in Kaohsiung , but the outfits and staging were low budget. This Taiwan stage is the '"real thing".

-- Some Kpop fans here might think I am a dogmatic hater of rapping. This is not the case. I think of rap in Kpop as being like a spice; a little of it, as here from SinB and Umji, makes the dish so tasty, but I cannot stomach a whole bowl of it.

-- All three members look beautiful here, but my bias Eunha is so gorgeous that the fancam MUST be posted.

-- VIVIZ are in a contract crisis at the moment, and part of me - the romantic @jemmesedi, as opposed to the scientific realist @jemmesedi - believes that this posting will somehow help the members in their distress. I know this is magical thinking, but...

    >> At the heart of all this lies the issue of citizenship. In recent years, it’s come to be regarded as a right. But it’s not. It’s a privilege to be earned. <<

Melanie Phillips, commenting on the Alaa Abd el-Fattah case, does us the service of summarizing a core doctrine of the far right not just in the the UK but in the USA, France, Germany, and beyond.

Do I need to add this doctrine is hateful, smacking as it does of some of the worst regimes of the 20th century?

  17. After going back and forth about how big or small my #BestOfKpop2025 list should be, I decided to revert to my original plan and just post my Song Of The Year.

I got hold of a copy of "The Vegetarian" and finished it this afternoon.

On one level, this novel - or is it a trilogy of linked novellas? - is a critique in fiction of the repression of women in socially conservative South Korea.

Yet "The Vegetarian" is much more than that, questioning as it does our distinctions between sanity and madness, care and cruelty, and humanity and nature.

More disturbing for me than all the body horror aspects of the book was the suggestion that a supreme moment of creative expression might be inextricably bound up with cruelty, exploitation, and betrayal.

At just under two hundred pages, this is not a long read. Thanks to @isa for your recommendation!

I don't want to flood your inbox, but I did want to thank you again for the Barbara Kingsolver recommendation.

I have just finished "The Bean Trees", which made a delightfully refreshing contrast to the last novel by a US author I read, Elmore Leonard's "Out of Sight"; see my comments on Leonard here: c.im/@jemmesedi/11532349921815

Even though "The Bean Trees" was published 37 years ago in 1988 -- the year that Trump really started Trumping -- I was pleasantly reminded as I read it of how the USA is so much more than the simplistic caricature of a country presented by MAGA. The book conveys a vivid sense of various US places - Kentucky, Oklahoma, Arizona -- and the diversity of these places' inhabitants. I also found it refreshing to read a novel steeped in progressive values that was without a trace of the graduate seminar room or East/West coast hipsterism. I liked the way that Kingsolver incorporated surprises in the narrative and humour too; I laughed out loud at times. All in all, an enjoyable but also thought provoking read.

I think I'm going to put "The Poisonwood Bible" on my TBR list.

Thanks again - should I be thanking Dawn too?

Malik is right to note that "the bald declaration that 'anti-Zionism is antisemitism' " has been used to deflect legitimate criticism of Israel.

Yet although he also notes that " anti-Zionism can be a cover for antisemitism", he appears not to recognize how widespread the use of this cover is.

So many of the antisemitic canards of old -- the malign fantasies of Jewish control of the media, the vindictive cruelty of the Jews, or the Jews as parasites -- have reappeared under the guise of "antizionism".

A parallel with opposition to affirmative action in the USA highlights the problem.

Although a significant number of African Americans oppose affirmative action,* can any serious observer of US politics and society doubt that much of the opposition was driven by racist resentment directed towards African Americans in particular?

Clear thinking about zionism and antizionism is further obstructed by the eagerness of both the Israeli right and doctrinaire antizionists to equate "zionism" with the policies of the current Israeli government. I wrote about this misconception here: c.im/@jemmesedi/11482539006437

This popped up in my YouTube recommendations and it reminded me of you.

I really like these outfits, but I doubt that the they will have anything like this on their tour. My guess is that they will do with outfits as they have done in Australia.

I don't know if outfits matter to you; they do to me, so I was a little disappointed that the VIVIZ North American tour has not included an outfit change during the concert.

On the other hand, that decision has made it easier for me to review the outfits they did wear: c.im/@jemmesedi/11524987212858
