🚨 Dread admin confirms critical GoBalance zero-day vulnerability behind recent .onion hijackings
Dread administrator "HugBunter" says a vulnerability in GoBalance allows attackers to derive Tor onion private keys from publicly available service descriptors, potentially enabling them to impersonate legitimate onion services.
The vulnerability reportedly affects all released versions of GoBalance, with multiple darknet markets also impacted.
Key points:
• No Dread server or database compromise, according to the administrator.
• Attackers can potentially recover onion identity signing capabilities without accessing the server.
• The attacker reportedly used AI to discover the vulnerability.
• Dread plans to release a patched version of GoBalance shortly.
• Dread is working to recover affected onion addresses and redirect users to legitimate services.HugBunter also claims the attacker attempted extortion but provided no evidence of possessing Dread's database.

‼️ If anyone is interested this is the Gobalance code affecting Omega Market and Dread currently.
-
🚨 PoC and security patch released for two critical GoBalance takeover vulnerabilities, used in attacks again Dread and Omega Darknet Market.
PoC: https://github.com/kolmteistov/gobalance-patch
The first flaw can allow recovery of a GoBalance onion service's master identity key from a single public descriptor due to incorrect nonce handling during blinded signing.
The second flaw allows forged instance descriptors to be accepted without proper signature and identity binding verification, potentially enabling complete frontend traffic hijacking.
Severity: Critical
Affected: GoBalance master branch at commit bb1b0f3
Status: Patched in the released security patchThe package includes an end-to-end PoC for both attack paths, a patched GoBalance source tree, regression tests, and a unified security patch.

🚨 Omega darknet market may have been hijacked, similar to the recent Dread incident.
Confirmed reports that Omega's main market link is redirecting visitors to the attacker's Conclave service.
HugBunter acknowledged the reports and said the attacker may be using keys collected over recent weeks to redirect onion services.

🚨 Paris has posted a signed PGP message on Pitch.
Paris says Dread’s onion service was compromised through a flaw in Gobalance, the load-balancing software used by the service.
According to the post, Gobalance incorrectly handled Tor’s 64-byte Ed25519 private keys as standard 32-byte keys. This caused part of the secret key material to be dropped during descriptor signing, allegedly making it possible to recover the onion service’s master secret key from a published descriptor.
Paris says the vulnerability had existed unnoticed for nearly four years and believes this, rather than an operational mistake, is how Dread’s onion key was exposed.

The Quid Pro Quo Sales Deal: A Security Leader’s Survival Guide
(written by me, on a keyboard, without AI, like a psychopath)Dig if you will the picture:
You’re a senior security leader when you get that dreaded *DING* on Slack (or, God help you, Teams):
“Hi, $SecurityLeader, I’m Bob from Sales! I’m working a HUGE deal with MobHit, Inc. They want to talk with you about buying their industry-leading EDR before they move forward with us. When can I get you on a quick call?”
Here there be dragons.
Your first instinct may be: “What’s the harm? I’m helping the company.”
And maybe you are.
But understand what you’re signing up for.
Bob: “It’s just a quick call!”
It is almost never just a quick call.
To MobHit, you are now a sales opportunity. Expect follow-ups, demos, objection handling, executive escalations, and increasingly creative attempts to keep you engaged.
And once you crack open the QPQ door, Sales will notice.
There may be hundreds of sales reps in your company.
There is one of you.
They lose nothing by asking. You lose time, attention, and energy.
Also: how real is Bob’s “game-changing” deal?
Is this truly strategic? Or is Bob staring at a stalled opportunity and throwing a Hail Mary?
If you’re going to engage, add some friction. Ask Sales leadership to confirm the deal is strategic, qualified, and important enough to consume your team’s time.
Bob is highly incentivized to care about his commission.
Your calendar? Less so.
Bob: “This will help us win the deal!”
Maybe.
But suppose you buy MobHit’s SuperDuperAIPowered EDR and they buy your product.
Congratulations. You may have just politically tied two contracts together.
Want to change EDRs later? Downsize licenses? Consolidate vendors after an acquisition?
Now your security decision potentially affects someone else’s renewal.
And here’s the bigger question:
Is this even the best technology for your environment?
Your mandate is to protect the company, not make one sales opportunity easier.
Two years from now, the account teams who pressured you into the deal may be long gone.
You’ll still own the product.
Bob: “But they’ll give us a better deal!”
License cost is only one part of cost.
Replacing a major security platform means migration, retraining, rebuilding integrations, workflows, processes, and policies.
While your team is doing that work, what important work are they NOT doing?
You: “Fine. We’ll buy it and leave it as shelfware.”
Ah, yes. Harmless shelfware.
Until the QBRs start.
Then the renewal calls.
Then someone in Finance asks:
“Why are we spending $XXXX on a product nobody uses?”
TL;DR:
Should Security leaders always refuse QPQ deals?
No.
Sometimes there is genuine strategic value.
But ask the question Sales probably isn’t asking:
“Given my mandate and role, what is the BEST way for me to help the company?”
There are real politics here. Saying no can create friction. Align with leadership early. Be skeptical of eternally optimistic account teams.
And never confuse helping close a deal with making the best security decision.
Good luck, and may the procurement Gods smile upon you.

Subject: Film Review: Orion and the Dark (2024)
For: #movie #reviews
Type: “Inception” for Children. Time Travel. Existential Dread.
Oddity level: Pretty Odd
Image: Orion and Hypatia flying with a children’s version of The Endless
Short link: https://dansu.org/review-orion-and-the-darkI stopped watching films and TV shows in 2007. I didn’t see either again on a regular basis until 2021.
In 2021, I started to watch #videos from different sources. I purchased a pile of BluRay discs, for example, at an estate sale. In the past few years, I’ve used yt-dlp to D/L foreign and/or classic films from YouTube as well.
I think that I’ll post reviews of #films that I’ve watched here periodically because, why not. The reviews might be helpful to people who are looking for lesser known oddities.
I’ll discuss both regular films and “family” films including foreign language examples of both. Subtitles are available online for the foreign films.
The first film to be formally discussed in this series is “Orion and the Dark”.
“Orion and the Dark” is a 3D-anim family film that is notable for being an “Inception” for children. The frame, the nature of what it is that we’re watching, is a nested doll thing that shifts repeatedly.
“Orion” is similar to the original 1984 “Neverending Story” film in this respect. [Run away from the “Neverending” sequels.] “Neverending” had three levels of framing. “Orion” is far less of a classic, but it has four levels, one more than “Neverending” did, and handles them well enough.
The Rotten Tomatoes critics score for “Orion” is 91% but the general audience score is only 57%. The difference of 34% is unusually large. It reflects the fact that some children who saw the movie said, “WTH was that?“ though others found it entertaining.
In general, it’s difficult to make nested doll plots, existential dread, and breaking the 5th or 6th wall work in films that are for both adults and children.
Oddly enough, two different films both titled “The Navigator” (1986 and 1988) made the existential dread part work and the 1988 film had “Inception” elements as well. I suppose that the 1988 film was closer to adult #horror than to a children’s film, but both “Navigators” did feature time-traveling children as protagonists [as does “Orion and the Dark”].
The protagonists of “Orion and the Dark” are: A boy dragged into the backstage of reality much as it happened in “Time Bandits” (1981). Or a boy and a girl who are trying to fix reality. Or a man and the same girl in a different decade. Or another boy who is an homage to the 1970s YA time-travel novel “Green Futures of Tycho”.
[For those who know the 1970s novel that I’m referring to, Tycho in the film is a reference to Tycho in the novel. FWIW The book is 50 years old as of 2027.]
Another interesting point is that the supernatural group which Orion and Hypatia meet in “Orion and the Dark” could be considered a friendlier version of Neil #Gaiman’s “The Endless”. [The attached poster for the movie shows some of the group from a distance.]
From this perspective, The Dark is a far more insecure version of The #Sandman. Insomnia is a lighter version of Destruction in Gaiman’s works. Sweet Dreams is a different aspect of The Sandman. Unexplained Noises is a little freaky, so perhaps she corresponds to Delirium.
There is even a character, Sleep, who could be considered a stand-in for Death in “Sandman”. Sleep is a natural and unavoidable end to the day just as Death is a natural and unavoidable end to life.
Without significant spoilers, “Orion and the Dark” ends on a nice note related to family and connections across decades.
To see a larger version of the movie poster, in most browsers, right-click on the thumbnail and select Open in New Window. Then resize the new window.

Book Review: A Warning to the Curious by M. R. James
Hi everyone! I hope you’re all well. Today is Friday, and it’s time for another review. Today, I’m sharing my review of A Warning to the Curious by M. R. James.
Click the image to find the book!A Warning to the Curious was first published in 1925 in the ghost story collection A Warning to the Curious and Other Ghost Stories by the publisher Edward Arnold. The story is 15 pages long.
The Plot
The story concerns a legend of three ancient “holy” crowns of East Anglia (or Anglia) buried along the coast to protect England from invasion. One was dug up long ago, one was lost to the sea, and the third remained, guarded by a family called the Agers. An amateur archaeologist/antiquarian named Paxton, on holiday, becomes obsessed with finding the last crown, which is located near the coastal town of Seaburgh.
Disregarding warnings and the fact that the last human guardian (William Ager) has died, Paxton finds and digs up the crown, which lead shim to be pursued by a spectral guardian (implied to be the spirit of the last of the Ager family, or something even older).
Characters
The Narrator
The nameless narrator serves as a framing device. Like many James narrators, he is a rational observer who collects the story after the fact, presenting it with scholarly detachment. This distance enhances the eerie tone, as if the tale is a documented incident rather than pure fiction.Paxton
Paxton is the central figure of the story. He is an amateur antiquarian—curious, intelligent, and unfortunately a bit too confident in his ability to outsmart old legends. He fits the typical M. R. James protagonist: a scholarly man who treats folklore as a puzzle rather than a warning. His curiosity drives the plot, but his personality remains somewhat thin.
Henry Long
Henry Long is present when Paxton tells his story about finding the crown and being stalked by the ghost. Along with the narrator, Long helps Paxton in his ultimately fatal attempt to return the treasure. The Guardian
The guardian, connected to the “Ager” family, specifically the last, recently deceased member, William Ager, is the most unsettling “character” in the story. It’s more of an unseen presence attached to the buried crown.James never fully describes it, which is a classic horror tactic. The creature—or spirit—seems to patrol the beach, ensuring the crown remains hidden.
Writing Style
M. R. James’s writing is rooted in a distinctly Edwardian storytelling style. The narrative voice is rather formal and often filtered through secondary accounts rather than direct action. Much of the story is conveyed through recollection and explanation, which gives it the feel of a reported incident rather than an immediate experience, which, as I said earlier, lends a certain eeriness to the story.James excels at atmosphere. His descriptions of windswept dunes, lonely seaside paths, and creeping dread are vivid and unsettling. The suggestion of horror—rather than explicit description—is one of his signature techniques.
However, this same restraint can also be a drawback. The pacing is slow, and the story spends a great deal of time building background before anything truly frightening happens. The characters are also somewhat distant, making it difficult to feel fully invested in their fate.
Final Thoughts
A Warning to the Curious contains all the ingredients of a compelling ghost story—ancient curses, buried treasure, and a relentless supernatural guardian—but the execution feels uneven. While the eerie premise and folklore elements are intriguing, the slow pacing and thin characterisation make the story less memorable than other works by M. R. James.I’m giving this one a 3/10.
Have you read A Warning to the Curious? What did you think?
As ever, thanks for stopping by and reading my review!
Until next time,
George

Imagine Film Festival: PH1SHed_
LAB111, Saturday, October 31 at 01:00 PM GMT+1
IMAGINE FANTASTIC FILM FESTIVAL 2026
Imagine is the largest film festival for Fantastic film in the Netherlands, showcasing the best in fantasy, horror, sci-fi and everything in between. Imagine is all about the imagination. We believe dreaming big is best, because Weird Is Wonderful.Besides the latest genre films, restored classics and shorts, Imagine 2026 will focus on magical realism in Latin American cinema and on the films of this year’s Guest of Honour, Japanese director Kiyoshi Kurosawa. A large chunk of the programme is also reserved for 2026’s main theme, Ghost in the Feed, which focuses on the anxieties and desires that arise with each new form of media technology. The programme examines five ‘Frequencies of Fear’ from the past century: the start of TV, the VHS era, the early internet years, the onstant online feed and our current immersive times. Dive into the feed with us through films, talks, a VHS-basement, an extensive immersive programme in de Filmhallen and more.
Ghost in the Feed also creates conversations between generations: the Gen X cinephile who remembers the tactile dread of a mysteriously unlabeled VHS tape; the Millennial who experienced the internet transform from utopian playground to corporate panopticon; the Gen Z viewer navigating horror through deepfakes and disappeared stories. Each generation believes their relationship to technology is unique, but we’re all possessed by the same ghosts, transmitted through different machines.
