Previously on Midlife Crisis Crossover: In addition to our annual road trips, my wife Anne and I have a twice-yearly tradition of spending our birthdays together, often traveling beyond Indianapolis to some new place or attraction as a short-term road trip -— partly as an excuse to spend time together on those most wondrous days, partly to explore areas we’ve never seen before. That’s every May for me and every October for her. We’re the Goldens. It’s who we are and what we do. Last weekend it was Anne’s turn. This year she wanted to see one of Indiana’s state parks that we hadn’t previously visited... ...and the winner was Clifty Falls State Park, two hours south of Indy. It's among Indiana's smaller parks, but Anne rather liked the idea of viewing pretty waterfalls on her special day. Previously on Midlife Crisis Crossover: Once in a blue moon I'll see a documentary in theaters! Usually those blue moons wax during Oscars season, then wane for the other forty-odd weeks of the year. Last month I already met my non-Oscars documentary quota for the decade with Linkin Park's half-doc/half-concert film, but that one was a special occasion for music fandom. Here we are again with another brand new doc, and for one of the oldest moviegoing reasons of all: it's The New Movie No One Online Will Shut Up About -- not critics, not entertainment sites, not even my local comic shop, which doesn't sell movies and stands to gain nothing from bringing it up. Last weekend You Can See Everything was the #2 film at the American box office, right behind the big video-game flick and well ahead of the entire Halloween-season horror parade. It mesmerized critics when it premiered last month at Telluride Film Festival, who were converted into its front-line proselytizers and have now preempted all other programming and trains of thought just so they can keep extolling its surreal nesting-doll structure of eye-popping twists within twists with as few spoilers as possible. Really hard to pick only nine, and when I started out deliberately listening to music, my taste was... wildly different (or, more precisely, non-existent).
So I limited (heh) myself to the stuff that is still in line with my current taste, and glossed over 2 Unlimited and DJ Bobo and a lot of other Eurodance acts 🫣
Since around 1997 it's been mostly crossover, hard rock, indie rock, and finally metal in all its forms.
