According to Karpelès, the malicious hardware captured the device's display output and button presses to identify the seed phrase, then transmitted it to the attacker over an LTE connection using an eSIM.
Now, a reminder is obligatory, that this guy is not the most... trustworthy source of information. But this time the story seems to match what reported by other users and by Ledger themselves.

Netflix’s “AI Gone Wild” documentary is pretty crazy and I’m really glad they made a documentary that accessible about the Hugging Face incident but I couldn’t get over the fact the dude they have to be the contrarian point of view had no fucking clue what he was talking about and seemed just as clueless and egocentric about AI as the rest of the documentary’s subjects.
He made some analogy about AI turning everything into paperclips and insisted it’s 15 years old and I’m like oh my god you’re trying to describe Eric Drexler’s grey goo analogy badly and how the fuck have the people making AI not read the Engines of Creation
