  1. So California.

My 1990 BMW e30 convertible under a native California oak, in front of a Napa vineyard, with golden hills in the background.

CA is "The Golden State" for our hills, which start the spring bright green, but turn golden in the summer dry season. Not for the gold rush.

From August 2020, taken on Yount Mill Road in the heart of Napa Valley.

  3. This is the passive solar house I mentioned in my previous post. Built in 1980, it had period-appropriate style and colors: chocolate brown tile floors to soak up sunlight, forest green carpets and wallpaper, brass fixtures. Almost no glass to the north, almost all glass to the south, with overhangs that shaded the windows in the summer. Most of these photos were taken during construction. I did all the tile, most of the trim and interior painting.

  7. Can a thing be valuable? To me, yes--if it represents great design, and/or if it has become part of the story of my life.

This carafe kettle is both. I bought it in my 20s, and used it this morning to boil water for iced tea. Handblown, the chimney is also a handle, kept cool enough for bare hands by the "steam stopper" that sits inside. The second photo is from 1982, where it's in the passive solar house I built in 1980 in

The restored Alice In Wonderland is terrific! Beautiful, hand-drawn animation: the fantasy sequence with the playing card soldiers is iconic.

With Eyvind Earle's midcentury style and color inspiration from the incomparable Mary Blair, 1959's Sleeping Beauty is worth watching over and over.

Look what I spotted in my Costco parking lot today.

Can't say much for the window tint and sticker, but I think the butterscotch color is pretty wonderful.

  18. It's a grey day in the desert today. Clouds have parked right on top of the San Jacinto Mountains.

It reminds me of the scene in "Close Encounters" when the aliens surround Devil's Tower with clouds as a cloaking device. No giant spaceships have appeared...yet.

  19. Just a little #ThrowbackThursday

One thing I know that's a little different: I can sail a square-rigged vessel. I was a volunteer crewmember aboard the tall ship #Elissa at the #TexasSeaportMuseum in #Galveston at the end of the 80s. I was the museum's assistant director in 1990-91.

That's me just to the left of the mast, helping furl the main topgallant.

But my beloved husband Craig comes to take me home for recovery in the morning, and another man I have loved in a different way is moving on into the universe. Goodbye, #ripdavidcrosby you brought my life its soundtrack. Thank you forever

Now we're approaching the transition to EVs. I've owned more VWs than anything else: a regular beetle, a super beetle convertible, 2 Karmann Ghias, a first-year Rabbit, a diesel Jetta, a Golf SE and my current car, a GTI. I already want the new ID Buzz, coming to the US in 2023.

  24. First in a series of convertibles in my life. My very first new car was a 1971 Super Beetle convertible. It was the first year of the Super Beetle, and the only model year when it had a flat windshield.

It was $2500. I remember parking it to walk to my very first day of classes at the University of Oklahoma. KOFM, 104.1 in Oklahoma City, was playing Rod Stewart's "Maggie May" as I got out of the car.

  26. I am remembering my Mom, Betty, on what would have been her 108th birthday. Our home in Norman OK was 4 blocks from the University of Oklahoma campus, where Dad was a professor.

This photo is from 1958, and my memories are of a wonderful childhood. So much of who I am comes from Mom's teaching and example. I still miss her a lot.
