We are used to hot weather in the southern California desert, so today's high is manageable. But it's a normal high temperature for July, it feels like our cooler late winter days have been snatched away!
-
The gym in our community is small, but it has a great view.

Tonight's Southern California sunset, very high clouds catching the sun before it drops below the mountains.

We got a good Western US big sky sunset tonight. Taken from the street in front of our house a few minutes before 5:00 PM (1700)

The rain (and mountain snow,) California's first atmospheric river event of the winter season, is just starting here in the desert east of Los Angeles. Just before it began, I caught this panning shot of the mountains wreathed in clouds.

The front that has brought lots of rain to California coastal areas today has brought dramatic skies to the desert and the Coachella Valley where we live.
This view, from our community clubhouse, is to the east. The lower, closer mountains are in full sunlight with a rainbow, while the Little San Bernardino Mountains behind them appear destined for rain .
Only a few actual drops here in Rancho Mirage.

Late summer in the southern California desert sometimes brings monsoonal moisture from the Gulf of California.
Early today it was as humid as south Florida, then we had a rare rainshower this afternoon, and this lovely sunset tonight.

This baby on the sill of our sliding glass door doesn't know he is a threatened population.
They seem to love our neighborhood, it's not unusual to see them when we're out on the community's walking paths. Adults are about 6-8" from head to tail.

We actually do have Spring in the desert. Desert native Palo Verde trees have green trunks and branches, with feathery leaves. This time of year they're covered with tiny yellow flowers. There is a grove of them on our community's exit drive, making a bright yellow understory for the palms.
For detail, the
2nd photo is a baby Palo Verde in our front yard. -
Spring in the southern California desert is windy season. For most of the year, vacuuming the pool is a once every 10 days or so thing. After nonstop wind off the desert for the last week, this is what I cleaned up this morning. (I sucked up at least this much last Sunday morning, showing how much blew in over the last four days.). Looks lovely now, though.
See comment for the results!

This nice 1960 Impala convertible was in the parking lot when I picked up lunch at In N Out today.

Good morning, Mastodon-land!
The San Jacinto Mountains are particularly majestic today, wreathed in clouds and dappled shadows. There is a sundoggish cloud rainbow near the peak.
It's 58F, 14C, a typical February day here in the Coachella Valley of California (taken from the street in front of our home in Rancho Mirage).
Palm Springs is at the base of the mountains, about 12 miles west of us. -
I'm having coffee on the terrace at our community center while our girls use the the fitness center.
They chose the site for the terrific view of the San Jacinto Mountains to the west. The only exceptions to the "exeriscaping only" rule are a few patches of lawn in shared areas and this one water feature, fed by wells on the property.
70F (21C) on December 1st is why 120 degrees in August is not a burden.

I was sitting in the lounge chair by our living room corner and heard a tap on the window behind me. When I swiveled around, this fellow was looking at me.
Roadrunners are not that unusual in our desert neighborhood, but I've never been this close before.

There is a CA Democrat in a (tight, winnable) race for the House: CA-41. It's gay former prosecutor #WillRollins who only lost to odious MAGA-ist Ken Calvert by 5000 votes in 2020. CA-41 includes #PalmSprings and #RanchoMirage , where I live
I've donated to Will and to Biden, and will continue to do so. Schiff ran vicious anti-Katie Porter ads to secure his spot. I will hold my nose and vote for him, but no $.

Here in Southern California, we are about 15 minutes from the maximum eclipse we'll see. This is my highly scientific splatter screen viewing device. Skies are 100% clear.

Out for a walk just now, and saw this beautiful late-afternoon sky. Weather enthusiasts, these look like lenticular clouds, are they? It's a gorgeous desert wintertime sky regardless. 67 degrees F, 19 C at about 4:20 PM.

Beautiful evening light on the Little San Bernardino Mountains. Looking east from our driveway a few minutes ago. #JoshuaTree National Park is on the other side of the mountains.

This brave red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) greeted me early this morning as I began my first local hike of the season. The really hot temps are gone, and I’m ready to spend a lot more time outdoors. #PalmSprings #RanchoMirage #birds #raptor #nature #wildlife #hiking #capture

Even though skies have cleared here in the greater #PalmSprings area, Interstate 10 is closed in both directions due to flooding, and will be all day.
This photo, looking west, was posted by the #NewYorkTimes about 10 this morning. That high-rise in the distance is the Agua Caliente Casino, just a few blocks from our house.

Hmm, I wonder if the #buffet at Agua Caliente Resort there is open nowadays. #RanchoMirage #PalmSprings

Update from our home in Rancho Mirage. We're fine, we are on high ground. The wind arrived with a new rainstorm about 10 minutes ago
Power has been flickering a little. It's 4:38 pm on Sunday afternoon. The rainfall total for the last 24 hours is 2.08 inches (a normal YEAR in the desert is about 4 inches of rain).

Flooding inside Eisenhower hospital in Rancho Mirage
A hospital employee says they’re running on generator power ~
Chase Cain, NBC -
This photo was about 30 minutes ago, as the first signs of #Hillary approach the desert where we live
Now we see lightning to the southeast over Joshua Tree, rapidly building winds, and a few wind-driven raindrops hitting the windows.
