The Ambushers, published in 1963, Donald Hamilton’s sixth Matt Helm spy thriller. Helm has to assassinate a rebel leader and rescue an American agent. Lots of double-crosses and moral murkiness and some scores to settle. Superb spy fiction.

Palm Springs carspotting today. I pulled into a parking spot at Aldi and had this rare (to me, anyway!) Porsche 944 cabrio for a neighbor. (There's a view from behind in the first comment)
A white convertible with a navy top and interior is one of my very favorite color combinations for a car -- my e30 convertible was the same.

There is only one good self serve wand-type carwash in the Coachella Valley. After giving my car the special attention it deserves, I found today's carspotting subject. It's a first generation VW Rabbit diesel hatchback.
This one's in really nice daily driver condition. I had a gas-powered 1974 Rabbit, bought new very soon after they were introduced, yellow like this one but a lighter shade.

Today's in-the-wild carspotting: a really well-kept Z3.

Watch this 17 min. video. It reveals the violent actions, but more importantly, the *names* of the federal agents who committed violence last fall
Wired doesn't allow me to share articles from my subscription, but this is powerful investigative journalism. It took a release-of-information lawsuit, plus hours and hours of work to unmask some of the worst federal offenders.
THIS is how real journalism works.

Only 19 years ago, HP offered costly high-bandwidth videoconference rooms, hosted at their offices, under the Halo brandname. You would book time, connect to colleagues in a similar room in another location, and "sit" across the table. It was a big deal, with a dedicated HP video network. Thanks to fiber and 5G, it's obsolete now and you do it from your phone for free.
Your Signal call, thanks to the miracle of infrastructure.

Not everyone in California has the accent, but especially in Southern California we do talk about highways and road trips like that.
Like, you know, tomorrow we're like really going on the 10 to the 60 to the 57 to Katella to go to Disneyland. No, it's true. Totally.

#WierdCarMastodon friends talking about vans got me to thinking about VW: what's going on with the electric ID.Buzz? It is really out of production? Stevens Creek VW, AFAIK, the largest VW dealer in California, has 15, with $10,500 discounts. Local dealer Coachella VW has 13. I think they're cool, and we now see them relatively often out here in the SoCal desert.
(In comments there's a link to the IDBuzz ad featuring The Californians)

This is a followup to my photo of a Fisker Ocean sighting last week.Wired magazine just published a long report on the Fisker Owners Association and their efforts to get right-to-repair for their cars. There's some sleuthing and semi-skullduggery in the story of how they rounded up all the spare parts.
I'm sorry it's paywalled; I have a subscription but they don't give me a sharing link.

Here is a rare sighting: a Fisker Ocean SUV. I think they had only just released these to market when Fisker suddenly went bankrupt and ceased all production.
I caught up to it at the light when I was coming out of our community today at lunchtime.

The "Bliss" wallpaper from Windows XP (the impossibly green rolling hills with blue sky and clouds) is a real place in Sonoma County in California. When we lived in the area, we drove past it often. Usually covered in grapevines, it's (temporarily) back to the way it looked.

Do you ever love a book so much you slow down your reading of it because you just don't want to get to the end and leave those characters behind?
That's how I am with the new season of "All Creatures Great and Small." PBS Passport (streaming access for min $5/month donors) lets me binge watch the whole season, but I'm allowing myself one episode a week so it won't be over yet.

TIL the iconic big "W" logo of the Weinerschnitzel hot dog chain was designed by none other than Saul Bass, who is better known for his beginning and end titles for Hitchcock's "North by Northwest," "Psycho," and "Vertigo."
