  2. Donald French, Michelle Goldberg, and Jamelle Bouie dissect Trump’s 2024 win: despite claimed mandates, approval remains low (38-41%). They highlight a narrow 1.5% popular vote margin, angry Democrats, and overlooked voter consequences, especially in Medicaid policy shifts affecting Republican bases. 3. This New York Times article by David French summarises Trump's worldview:

'By word and deed, Trump treats Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping as his only real peers. Our allies, by contrast, are our subordinates.

It’s as if Putin, Xi and Trump are feudal lords, and each is entitled to his own feudal domain.'

We’re prone to the same sins and flaws as the people of any other nation, and protecting the rights and dignity of our opponents is just not something that comes naturally to us.

It’s a learned behavior, modeled by leaders, and when leaders stop modeling tolerance and decency, Americans are prone to backslide to fear and animosity."

  16. "MAGA’s problems extend well beyond the campaign.

In fact, every dysfunction you’ve seen on the far left has emerged on the far right, and the far right hasn’t been repudiated; it’s been empowered.

Dissenting Americans should brace themselves for an assault on free speech, extreme intolerance and a vicious form of cancel culture that includes an avalanche of threats and intimidation."

  25. Rob Boston: New York Times columnist unmasks racism of Christian Nationalism

"It’s always interesting when a conservative Christian learns that Christian Nationalists can be, well, nasty people.

The latest person to figure this out is David French, a former writer for the National Review who’s now a columnist for The New York Times. In a recent gut-wrenching piece, French writes about being driven out of his church, which is affiliated with the conservative Presbyterian Church in America, after a barrage of online attacks on him and his wife.

French’s cardinal sin is that he’s not a fan of Donald Trump and has publicly said so. Some members of his church and online trolls attacked him for that, but a faction went much further and unleashed a fusillade of racist assaults on French and his wife because they had adopted a 2-year-old girl from Ethiopia in 2010."

  28. Because he has defended religious liberty and pluralism, and the civil liberties of drag queens and LGBTQ families, and has pushed against the authoritarian turn in white evangelicalism in the US, his former church has cancelled him:

"Race and politics trumped truth and grace, and now I’m no longer welcome in the church I loved."

Not to forget: 50%+ of white Christians voted for Trump twice.
