  6. #Transport for #London Freedom of Information release:
#TfL has responded to a Freedom of Information request on comparative #hydrogen and electric bus performance. TfL said it does not hold a Life Cycle Cost Analysis comparing hydrogen fuel cell and battery electric buses for high-frequency routes, as no such study has been completed. However, it provided 2023 data on hydrogen consumption for its double-decker fleet, showing monthly usage ranging from 6.24 to 7.78 kg per 100km. The lowest consumption occurred in February, while the highest was recorded in June. The data indicates higher fuel use during summer months compared with winter. TfL also confirmed that 50% of capital funding for hydrogen infrastructure comes from external grants, with the remainder funded through its core budget.

  13. ⚖️ Communications from 2010 revealed the legal and regulatory hurdles surrounding the design and approval of the New Bus for #London (New Routemaster), particularly its open rear platform inspired by the original Routemaster #buses. #European and international safety rules generally required service doors to remain closed while vehicles were moving, raising doubts over whether the design complied with regulations. Department for #Transport officials suggested the rear entrance could be treated as “stowed” rather than functioning as a conventional door, although there were concerns about a possible challenge from the European Commission. To avoid stricter European approval requirements, the project proceeded under the UK’s National Small Series Type Approval scheme, allowing certification for domestic use. The Vehicle Certification Agency said it would defend the interpretation if challenged, while warning there could be no guarantee of success.

  15. Clippings from T#rains, Omnibuses, and Trams (TOT, Vol. 11, No. 135, Jan. 1933) and Pennyfare (Vol. 2, No. 1, Jan. 1935)

In July 1907, #London Electrobus Co., Ltd introduced 34-seat, 40 h.p. battery buses. Within nine months they covered 93,482 miles and carried nearly one million passengers.

Supporters such as Mr Paul Taylor hailed the Electrobus as a quiet alternative that might “abolish petroleum from the streets,” noting quicker acceleration than petrol #buses. However, batteries were costly and performance limited to about 12 m.p.h. By 1910, it disappeared petrol buses dominant.

By 1933, A.V.M. noted renewed interest in electric traction. Trolleybuses were successful but restricted by overhead wires and fixed routes. Advances such as the Edison and #Irish Drumm batteries, and cheaper electricity from the National Grid, encouraged revival.

A future “battery bus” was envisaged, combining petrol flexibility with electric silence and cleanliness, making engineers “ten a penny.”

#TfL is seeking views on a proposal to re-route bus route 310 via #Holloway, Nag’s Head, following a trial and consultation. A new contract for the route will start from the end of August. The proposed change would divert the service from Stroud Green Road at Finsbury Park, creating new links to Holloway Road, Seven Sisters Road, Tollington Road and Isledon Road. TfL says this could shorten journey times between Stamford Hill and Golders Green and provide more direct journeys later in the evening. Other confirmed changes include later running across all days, an extension to Rookwood Road and a continued 20-minute frequency. Some passengers travelling between Archway and Finsbury Park would need to change buses again, with route 210 continuing to serve those roads. Feedback is open until Friday 6 March 2026.

  25. 🚧🐝 Next phase of a £150m investment into Greater Manchester’s Metrolink begins this month, with major track works to improve safety, reliability and long-term resilience. From 16–29 May, no trams will run between Victoria and Rochdale town centre while track, drainage and ballast are replaced between Monsall and Newton Heath & Moston. About 290 concrete sleepers and 2,000 tonnes of gravel are being used, aiming to improve ride quality and lift current speed restrictions. Replacement buses will operate, and some services will be rerouted, with East Didsbury services starting from Exchange Square. At Derker, steel sheet piling will stabilise ground affected by a 2024 landslip. A further closure from 25–29 May will suspend #trams between St Peter’s Square/Market Street and Piccadilly for equipment upgrades at #Piccadilly Gardens, with alternative travel via walking, interchange or free buses. Passengers are advised to plan ahead using the Bee Network app.
