In any kind of normal timeline this would have been stopped by regulators. Instead we let a single company become the sole gatekeeper for everything in #HPC .
SchedMD are the makers of #slurm , the (only) Open Source cluster scheduler, and used by a large majority of cluster computers. Nvidia bought Mellanox a few years ago, the maker of Infiniband, the main network technology for clusters.

I needed some wire because of LED lighting.
LED light bulbs are great, but they're heavier than the old incandescent ones. So my cheap #IKEA #Anglepoise knock-off desk lamp kept sagging from the weight.
I *could* find a new set of springs with a larger spring constant. But an easier fix is to restrict part of each spring, effectively making them shorter, and resisting a larger weight. Works fine!

@Gina
I know how you feel. We dropped to 19°C last night. I had to wear long sleeves going to work this morning. -
The #SCA #HPCAsia 2025 #HPC conference in #Osaka registration is open and the full program is online:
https://www.sca-hpcasia2026.jp/
Worth noting that it's quite a bit cheaper than SC or ISC; and the tutorials (and lunch) seem to be included in the price. I joined the #Spack tutorial two years ago; it's a good one.

New #SCP_Foundation film on YouTube: I Do Not Recognize The Bodies In The Water
Based on SCP-2316 and 40 minutes long so a fairly serious movie. And good - if you like the SCP setting you'll enjoy this one.

Pickled herring and egg sandwich for lunch! I'm a sucker for the finer, refined things in life.

Anyone knows what's going on with #Matlab and #Mathworks lately? Seems a lot of their services have been down for days now.

FYI, if you live in #Japan you may want to know that #Elecom has a policy of stating that their Ethernet cables are compliant with a given specification, even when they *don't actually* comply and don't meet the requirements.
Maybe skip Elecom the next time you buy Ethernet or USB cables, or anything else that needs to follow a specification to work well.
It's perhaps not a coincidence their Bluetooth mice seem unable to maintain a stable connection, for instance.

New #GPU! From an 8 year old rx570 8GB to a #rx9070, on #Ubuntu 25.04. Mostly great!
A local #LLM (qwen2.5 14B) using Vulkan ran at 2.1 tokens/s. It now runs at 48T/s - a 25x improvement in compute performance.
The same scene in #BG3 with maxed out 4K settings ran at 12-15fps. It now sits at 60fps, with the GPU at only 80%. *And* it uses less power doing so (system power from 295w to 275w).
Not perfect - #Valheim fails at startup. This is normal for new hardware on Linux and will be fixed.

Afternoon cup of coffee at #Söt #coffee in #osaka . Yunnan Dehong yeast fermented beans. Fruity and light but not notably acidic. A treat!
I find Söt Coffee to be 90-100% of #glitch coffee in quality, but at half the price and a way more relaxed cafe environment. You can actually sit down and read a book or something while enjoying your drink of choice.

FYI, if you happen to be a scientist in a large English-speaking country with uncertain future research financing; my employer, Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) is looking for grad students, postdocs and PIs.
It's a research institute, so no undergraduates, and the working language is English - no japanese required. And its located on a (semi) tropical island in the Pacific.
