  1. In a shocking twist, MathWorks' own #Cleve #Moler, the genius behind #MATLAB, decided to pull off the ultimate "exit strategy" by checking out of this mortal coil. 🙄 Instead of mourning, the company suggests browsing their vast library of #webinars and product demos. Because nothing says "tribute" like an on-demand tutorial! 📚💻

  6. Ah, the age-old quest for MATLAB alternatives, where engineers are lured by the siren song of savings 🤑 — because who doesn't want to pay a small mortgage for software? 🤔 This 22-minute saga, updated for 2026, boasts as many buzzwords as a Silicon Valley startup pitch, yet leaves you wondering if any alternative can truly dethrone the mighty #MathWorks empire. 🏰💸

  12. #MathWorks server issues have persisted for days, affecting licensing and downloads. This highlights how dependent many academic workflows are on proprietary systems.

Consider alternatives that remain available regardless of vendor status:

🔹 Julia – built for numerical computing
🔹 Python – widely used, with strong scientific libraries

    Both are open-source and resilient.

  13. #hugops to the folks at #MathWorks working to recover from a widespread outage (due to a ransomware attack) that has caused many things there to be down for over a week now:

(Bad timing too for students unable to finish up final projects, etc, due to license server outages.)

  14. The MathWorks outage is the perfect time to look at GNU Octave! No license servers to deal with for FLOSS! octave.org/

Even if it's not helpful right now during the outage, consider it for future work to avoid stoppage the next time the MathWorks hostage server goes down.

  19. @GossiTheDog I don't know what web sites you are talking about? I can access my online resources just fine, for instance matlabacademy.mathworks.com/ or matlab.mathworks.com/

  20. Anyone knows what's going on with and lately? Seems a lot of their services have been down for days now.

  21. So I sudo installed matlab on a linux box - because people still continue to release important scientific software on proprietary platforms...

Apparently the pathdef (a config file) is now owned by root, and there is no way to create a per-user config.

Any linux matlab users who have a good strategy for defining some sort of sane, maintaineable user-config ?

Lots of errors. Could use some opinions and advice.

  27. @poleguy

That's cool. We don't really have that expertise here. I can hack my way through Python usually, but not to a high professional degree, usually just utilities.

And I really have no issues with licenses in general. We have enough and the tool (Riviera-PRO) is very good, better than Questasim in my experience.

The issue is that #MathWorks is just super opaque. I just want prices but they don't publish them, and having to go through the same information through two different sales guys was tedious.

As far as filter design and other tools, several years ago I went through a process trying to use Python to generate filter coefficients from scipy and compare against MATLAB. Honestly the MATLAB ones were better. I believe it was the same underlying algorithm, but there was a little secret sauce in there that improved things. Anecdotal since I haven't done a wider study, but makes me wary.

  28. @nicorikken you are really not correct in stating that "much of the industry has moved to Python". is used a lot in . less so, but may be more promising eventually.
We have 8000+ users of and the algorithms they develop are deeply embedded into every machine we sell.
The and ASML are more than mere vendor and client. We drive MATLAB development by partnering with The MathWorks and making sure that our requirements end up as features in future releases.

  29. We are ASML

By the way, today I opened a new position in one of my IT teams in Veldhoven, The Netherlands (ASML's HQ):
I am looking for a Senior MATLAB Support Engineer to help support the roughly 8000 MATLAB and SimuLink users in our Research, Development & Engineering departments.

  30. Just landed in the UK after an amazing #SC22. Not only was it lovely to get to spend some quality bonding time with my #mathworks colleagues but I got to speak to what felt like hundreds of people who are interested in #MATLAB.

Also caught up with many friends from the community who I haven’t seen for far too long and made a bunch of new friends too!

One of my favourite moments was when a MATLAB dev was bonding with a Julia dev over their shared coffee geekery!

  31. @garritfra It may have simulink, which I'm not real familiar with but if it's doing graphical simulations that might explain it. Be sure to warn her that #Mathworks will spam her regularly once she installs #MATLab. Also warn her that the commandline linux version is glitchly & sometimes the engine only runs properly in the GUI. She should pressure the school to switch to #GNUOctave.
