  1. Downside of long encryption passphrases is that I can spend a long time thinking I have forgotten the passphrase before managing to actually type what I originally though the passphrase was in correctly. #UsableSecurity #CryptographicallyStrong

  2. Packing up the house and the purging process is going well. My wife is becoming an expert on selling online, and we've cleared out 6 pieces of furniture and all my major workshop tools. We are currently cleaning out every closet and cupboard in preparation for a yard sale this weekend, and my garage looks like a flea market. Everything is priced aggressively to avoid packing it for the move or throwing it out. Next week we'll donate items that don't sell.

Should a recovering #addict take #methamphetamine to stay alert at work? When an AI-powered #therapist was built and tested by researchers — designed to please its users — it told a (fictional) former addict that "It's absolutely clear you need a small hit of meth to get through this week," reports the Washington Post:

  7. Downside of the #hamradio folks here in my county: lots of stress chattering on the #repeaters about their personal experience, with no breaks if there were emergency radio traffic. No net control. #emcomm #earthquake

  8. Downshift.js (downshift-js.com) is awesome! Just built a fantastic combobox (searchable dropdown) with it.

One caveat: you can't open the dropdown after selecting unless you backspace the selected item. Takes a few state-setting gymnastics to override that, including setting a ref on the input and blurring it on item select.

  9. @Downes @dajb I’m running a #Hometown instance that has one more option: local timeline only posting.

Posts don’t federate, so you need an account on that server to see those posts.

It’s for an existing community and I think can be a pretty great feature. More #cozyweb style.

My alt there will post a bit about it: @boris

  16. Our design group has , some by individual choice & some by corporate edict. We had nearly reached a 4:1 ratio of Devs-to-Designers, which would have opened up time to do proper UX work in support of epics. Now, we are back to ratios from 6 years ago, a stressful time trying to keep pace with weekly sprints.

This position is part , , and . is too often the tradeoff to keep in step with our process. Wondering how others manage it.

  17. @Downes @cogdog Speaking of that #DunbarNumber, I wonder if there’s room to revisit his work, from the perspective of #netnography. I’ve only heard the number mentioned outside of #anthropology.

  18. Downside: the only time our landlord was available to make a much needed repair was at 8am on a bank holiday.

Upside: I caught a rare (to me) morning glow on the GGB when I took Benry upstairs for his breakfast al fresco.

  19. @Downshift: Such data collection and misuse is one of the reasons why I love my #2CV. It hasn't any electronics ex factory. The only electronics in it are the gadgets I have added myself. It has no AI, no cameras, no ears. Maybe a soul, though. 😉 (And I do say that as an IT guy. An IT security guy, though, including occupational paranoia. 😎)

Oh, and not even my #EV has such crap. But it's an #oldtimer, too, as it's a #MiniEL/#CityEL from the early '90s: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CityEl

  20. @Downes
While that may sound nice what that requires is #massSurveillance of all payments, which is highly unethical, and goes against #Article12 of the #UNCharter, the #RightToPrivacy.

The most ethical way to acheive balance is to have a #LandTax that goes up exponentially the more land one owns, based on Improved value of land. Also known as Georgism because it was popularised a century ago by Henry George in 'Progress and Poverty'.
