🎉🎉🎉 it's the 34th birthday of the world wide #web so it's a great day to share the upcoming deadline for #writing submissions to GOOD INTERNET! two and a half weeks away!!!
📖 in case you're unaware, GOOD INTERNET is an #indie print AND digital magazine that is run & contributed to by volunteers!
#goodinternet covers a lot of different aspects of the #SmallWeb: unplugging from the corporate web, fighting #enshittification, migrating from data-harvesting corpo social media, creating your own personal website, using code and website-building as an #art form, federation, and creating websites for fun. the aim is to be approachable for beginners and enjoyable for seasoned #indieweb travelers!
🙅 you don't have to be a pro #webdev or a #coding whiz to write about all the good things happening on "this side" of the web.
📣 we want to spread the word about and share thoughts, independent web projects, services, methods, sites, meet-ups, and celebrate the non-corporate web together while making it easier for us to partake and unplug from #bigtech and unhealthy #socialmedia habits.
🔍 we're looking for 1,000- to 4,000-word articles aimed at website owners and hobbyists, any digital (and traditional) artists, #internet culture enthusiasts, #technology nerds, social media expatriates, & anyone who wants to unplug from the corporate-owned web.
⌛ the deadline is August 22, 2025 ⌛
🙏 please boost and help get the word out!

CW: Gardening and a reflection on a retreat from the wider internet
Way out here on the edge of the internet, there are many smaller, purpose-driven communities.
(Not all of them are wholesome, of course; but the ones I directly engage with correspond with my personal values).
I suppose it's what @anildash (maybe? if I am mis-attributing this, my apologies) calls the #CozyWeb. 7/x
-
I think I miss the point of the #now page in #aboutIdeasNow
People seem to use it as a sort of "Objectives" article?
I feel like /now could be a list of activities like in #ActivityPub since those are often things I'm reading and sharing right now.
-
@ct_bergstrom I’ve been sharing this #CozyWeb post from #VenkateshRao a bunch today, which tells a similar story: https://studio.ribbonfarm.com/p/the-extended-internet-universe
I especially like the #DarkForest analogy they reference: https://onezero.medium.com/the-dark-forest-theory-of-the-internet-7dc3e68a7cb1 -
I'm sure this has hit the Fediverse plenty, but I'm late to the train on Digital Gardens & the Cozy Web definition.
@maggie absolutely crushes it with this summary

Excited to work on releasing my very own digital garden in 2024 🌱

-
"Open source, community-owned software [...] offers a remedy to the deep rooted issues of opaqueness and stakeholder imbalance in closed-source software, but it is not innately cozy. That is an added quality resulting from an intentional design towards that specific end."
-
Is there another word to describe that weird middle place between the algorithm and the #cozyweb? The place where you can easily find other people, it just takes a few more clicks?
2/
-
Having a pretty weird time here.
Big tech's social media came to be such an exploitive, awful space that I just stopped participating.
Learning to be a bit vulnerable on the web, again. Express ideas, share opinions.
Day-by-day a bit less worried about random drive-by trolls and the tilt of the algorithm.
Feeling less on-guard. More myself.
Weird, but nice.
-
Is the #fediverse and #mastodon - with all its current difficulties and (literal) copy and paste "rough" edges a manifestation of the #CozyWeb? But not so underground.

@Downes @dajb I’m running a #Hometown instance that has one more option: local timeline only posting.
Posts don’t federate, so you need an account on that server to see those posts.
It’s for an existing community and I think can be a pretty great feature. More #cozyweb style.
My alt there will post a bit about it: @boris
-
@kensanata Also I’m learning about joining large networks of relays. I can’t be understanding it correctly that every site is a mirror of everybody else’s public posts. That can’t be a good idea. Server costs not being shared by the instances, but instead being duplicated them. Straining both the wallet and Earths limited resources.
I’d rather use some sorta third-party external discovery service.
Having separate accounts solves the categorization problem practically but:
- it makes federation moot & a waste of resources
- it has all the drawbacks that having accounts on a bunch of random bb forum sites had
To devil’s advocate, it’s not 100% moot since users on the specialized instances can still reblog, favorite, reply etc to selected posts from offsite. Just like you’ve been doing. As I find cool peeps from on there via people’s reblogs, I can follow them from here.
(I could also create an account over there, use it to discover cool peeps, and follow them from here. Maybe I’ll do that. I’m not in a hurry to grow, partly because #cozyweb philosophy and partly because I wanna see the VPS bill from first month before I do anything wild.)

Just wanted to share a couple of things I've been enjoying lately.
www.datagubbe.se/ is the personal website of Carl, who uploads wonderful blog posts about vintage computing and other geeky things. I've been reading through them one by one and really enjoying what he has to share.
loriemerson.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/artyping.pdf is an old book from 1939 about how to create artwork on a typewriter, basically early ASCII art. It's an easy fascinating read and also includes many examples!
