Every Sunday I look back at the preceding week in kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen GFriend – Season of Memories.
I was never in much doubt about this week’s choice, the only uncertainty being which iteration I should choose. I decided to feature the Inkigayo stage for two reasons. In the first place, I fell for the styling , even though I am not usually a fan of identical outfits. Secondly, that styling, reminiscent as it is of Japanese sailor suit school uniforms, complements the Jpop inspired sound of the song itself.
GFriend have not only drawn on Japanese musical styles, but have also, with songs like “Memoria”, achieved some notable successes with Japanese releases. That Japanese connection should remind us western kpop fans that we ought not to fall into occidentocentricity when fretting about whether kpop is becoming “too westernized”, because for GFriend, as for much of the industry, Japan matters as much as if not more than the west does.

With the exception of Sowon, all the members of GFriend are Christians, with Yuju and SinB being Roman Catholics. I wonder if performing this song has any special significance for them.

Yuju's heel broke during this "Season of Memories" stage. I am not sure exactly when it happens, but at 3:05 her left shoe seems damaged. Kudos to Yuju for dancing through this mishap!
When the stage began, I had looked at the footwear and picked out Yuju's as my favourite...

I had just been watching a video of a VIVIZ photoshoot when I came across this worrying news story.
I so much hope that Eunha, SinB, and Umji can stay together as VIVIZ and find another agency.
Even if they can, I expect there to be not only a contract termination dispute with BPM but also wrangles about intellectual property and performance rights.
In addition to possible problems with past creations, a question of artistic direction in the future looms. Kany, the choreographer who was giving their dance a more provocative style, left BPM herself not that long ago; will the members be able to work with her again? Would a new agency be ready to offer not just the investment but the support and confidence for VIVIZ to continue their growth?
I dread to think what Eunha, SinB, and Umji have been going through. First, there was the failure of the GFriend contract renewal and now BPM appears to be falling apart. In addition, I doubt that THE BOYZ were the only group to have been shortchanged and shabbily treated in general. What stress the poor girls must be under!
I will be most upset if this is the end for VIVIZ.

Every Sunday I look back at the preceding week in kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen VIVIZ -- Shhh! -- Studio Choom
I was glad that this song, unlike so many releases nowadays, ran long enough to develop and incorporate a bridge. Both in terms of sound and choreo, VIVIZ continue to carve out their own distinctive niche, as opposed to being a diminished GFriend. As far as styling is concerned, both Eunha’s belly chain and SinB’s short hair get a thumbs up from me.

bit.ly/perdidos627ytPerdidos En El Éter #627: - Magic Knight Rayearth (Parte I)

VIVIZ -- Mirror
https://youtu.be/65YUZWF0jJA?si=Xsnnv7Qh_XmVJ3eiAlthough this fancam was recorded at a concert in Hong Kong a couple of years ago, I've only just come across it.
Musically, "Mirror" sounds very much as if it could have been a GFriend song; I wonder if it was originally written with them in mind. Anyway, I like it and was pleased to see a choreographed performance even if the fancam is ...fancammy!
I also love seeing Eunha with her hair up. Although I understand the appeal of long lustrous locks, I wish more idols would wear their hair shorter. These styles can show off the head and face so well.
I'm going to append a YouTube of "Mirror" which will allow one to better appreciate the song's musical qualities.

Thank you for setting this up @Erzbet . I appreciate your doing this every week.
I like a lot of Kpop songs with one word titles, so I imposed two additional constraints on my selection:
- not just a one word title, but a one syllable word.
- a track that I have not posted before.
So I came up with
GFRIEND -- GLOW
https://youtu.be/yNHSApmeaEY?si=jetWwUjDhOUfBrCjEven though the video quality is not the best and Eunha's hair is not in the bob I love so much, the outfits win me over.

Not fully animated, but this is the first MV that came to mind.
For one, it came out at this time last year, and two, it borrows a lot from Japanese rock styles that dominate anime opening themes.
Also, I like trains. 😝

@woozle My view is that the groups functionality is going to be external to the main Mastodon / ActivityPub layer. Most likely it will be some framework that uses Mastodon* but isn't Mastodon itself. Mastodon-as-transport-layer (with added goodies such as identity management, moderation, notifications, and another set of interfaces into the discussion).
Mastodon as comments-system on blogs seems one approach. I'm not sure that's what a fully-evolved system will look like, but it's at least in the direction of a solution-shaped object, as they say.

Every Sunday I look back at the preceding week in kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen BEWAVE – Hard to get to you
As we went into the chorus I knew I would be putting this song on my playlist, and the song as whole makes excellent use of a tried and tested verse/chorus structure. Watching the video made me think that the agency was hoping to fill a GFriend shaped gap in the market. I can’t wait for the release of a performance video!

I don't post my views on every new Kpop release I hear, but I will note that neither RESCENE -- Busy Boy nor H1-KEY -- To My First Love has really landed with me.
I have been a keen supporter of RESCENE in the past, so I was thrilled when I saw this unheralded release, but what I heard disappointed me. Perhaps "Busy Boy" will grow on me -- or perhaps not. I was not too happy to read that the release has something to with blockchains, which I associate with crypto awfulness.
"To My First Love" ought to be my cup of tea; it continues the vigorous rock of "Good For You" and this style is perhaps a little musical callback to GFriend's rock sound, to complement the visual references to the GFriend "Rough" MV. Yet it didn't grab me and the chorus evaporated from my memory as soon as the MV finished.
So that's this week's dose of Kpop disappointment. Yet my feelings of anticlimax will be as nothing compared to what some BTS fans* will experience if "Arirang" does not live up to expectations, because those expectations are so much higher and the sense of emotional connection with the group so much deeper than anything I feel about either RESCENE or H1-KEY.
Are BTS fans here in the Fediverse engaging in expectation management? What are your hopes and fears?
* I write "BTS fans" rather than ARMY because I am never quite sure how the latter term works grammatically.

VIVIZ-- BOP BOP! l @Сәлем! K-POP FESTA_2022.6.18.
https://youtu.be/cqqngGqN7lc?si=6kSWIkwlKafaMNXJEunha, SinB, and Umji are in limbo at the moment after terminating their contract with BPM Entertainment. The uncertainty about the future must be difficult for them, and I imagine they also feel frustrated as they were almost certainly preparing for a comeback this spring.
This fan feels robbed of a VIVIZ comeback too, so I thought as consolation I would go back to a lesser known chapter of VIVIZ history, their performance in Kazakhstan.
I chose "Bop Bop" because I love that debut song of theirs. They also performed a number of GFriend songs, which I think VIVIZ have done either rarely or never otherwise; I decided not to post any of those because I found the absence of Yerin, Yuju, and Sowon jarring.
The modern hanbok outfits were a good choice for women appearing in Kazakhstan as both Kpop idols and cultural ambassadors. I learned a little about the creation of these outfits...

@woozle I'm not going to claim any great success myself.
Though #GTD (Getting Things Done, or as I prefer to phrase it , "Getting Shit Done", is a useful framework.
I've had a few past discussions on it ... see below. The book (by David Allen) is IMO pretty good. @Sandra disagrees re: the book, though she likes the system, and has written her own summary:
https://idiomdrottning.org/gtd-overview
That notably omits the tickler file / 43 folders (12 months, + 31 days) for future / repeating tasks.

One key is that you've got to remove stuff from those to-do lists.
My largest obstruction has been entities (usually people, sometimes institutions) actively sabotaging any attempt at real progress toward goals.

🧵 2/2
"La Pam Pam" sounds to me like an orchestral pop piece that has been influenced by anime music. I think too that influence was at work in a lot of GFriend music.
I note that because Japan has also contributed to kpop musically as well as in terms of industrial organization and idol culture in general. Of course, the US musical influence on kpop is much more noticeable but that Japanese input is still there.
The overall importance of Japan to the kpop industry often gets neglected in those "Is Kpop getting too westernized?" discussions . Part of the reason for that neglect is that we in the west naturally focus on the west, but I also think that sensitivities about Japan Korea relations come into it.
Although I have an interest in late 19C and 20C East Asian history, I have no expert knowledge, so treat what I say with appropriate caution; a lot of it is just conjecture.
I sometimes wonder if Kpop can tell us something about Japan Korea relations. On the one hand , you have "scandals" pertaining to that history:
https://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/art/2025/02/398_344898.html
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-46147777
On the other hand, you have the importance of the Japanese market for the kpop industry and the Japanese influences I've noted earlier.
Kpop fan spaces tend to fall back on a version of history in which Japan is simply the colonial oppressor and Korea the victim.
I certainly would not want to deny the importance of that colonial exploitation in general and the the scars left by practices such as sex slavery.
Yet I have a feeling that this narrative is simplistic . Colonies depend on consent and collaboration as well as oppression, and my guess is that applies here too. Possibly there is a parallel with British -Irish relations, where revisionist historiography in Ireland has shifted from "centuries of unbroken resistance" to a more complex and nuanced view .(I'm aware of the challenges to that revisionism).
That historical complexity is reflected in the relations that obtain today between the UK and Ireland in general and even in the entertainment industry in particular.
So I am wondering if we might get a better understanding of the kpop industry and even kpop artistry if we were ready to admit the possibility that the popular history in kpop spaces merits critical scrutiny.
To obviate any misunderstandings, I am not denying or trying to play down the appalling aspects of Japanese rule in Korea and elsewhere in Asia.
Okay, we need more music at this
point. GFriend -- Memoria seems appropriate. As well as having an apt title, it's a great song, even though the lyrics include a corny English rhyme and the MV has some ugly outfits!https://youtu.be/YTWwz6R6jy0?si=-sX7NZNNUhfETnnP

I feel that I ought to be exercising self restraint when it comes to posting Kpop, but I cannot resist this recent Hannam University festival stage of "Bop Bop".
"Bop Bop" is one of my favourite VIVIZ tracks, so I was delighted to see this posted on YouTube.
Eunha looks as lovely as ever, SinB's short hair hits the spot, and Umji shows yet again how beautiful she has become.
I often dream about an all night Kpop disco, with "Bop Bop" , GFriend -- MAGO, recent club/dance bangers from STAYC, Yeji, Chung Ha, and Hello Gloom, as well as older tracks like the magnificent KARA -- Mamma Mia...what would you put on the playlist? Boy group suggestions particularly welcome!
