Recently I subscribed to the Monsterdon group @monsterdon , & I've started adding it to certain posts (e.g. Monsterdon poll options info). Hoping that it might improve reach as this account is on a "minor" instance, because I'm still not 100% clear how Fediverse federation or groups work.
Today I discovered tags.pub when it boosted one of my posts for the KungFuSat watch party. Apparently a bot that boosts posts with certain hashtags. I think like a Mastodon group... but without a specific human as admin?
I've followed several watch party-related tags.pub accounts (not all watch parties have a related tags.pub account yet) on this alt account to see what effect it might have, e.g. will it improve how many watch party posts I see here and when they arrive (because up to now, too many posts missing or late when I try using it for a watch party).

Ideally the groups should be discoverable through fedi, like mastodon accounts, even if the content and activity of the group can't be made available given what can realistically be achieved at the moment.

Meta have started hawking about with adverts in my messenger feed. Can't emphasise enough that if groups come soon to mastodon I'll move away from meta almost exclusively to federated platforms self-hosted by my good self...

You know when you needed a reliable way to have #MastodonGroups and some #Middleware is gonna get retired soon, you actually get #Lemmy and #Kbin to come to the rescue and make a #PermanentSolution of it all.

@transport Testing use of this group. Would other transport planning related Mastodians be interested in using it as a focus for posts? (Assuming current group users don't object?). If you'd like to try, follow that account, and use it to 'tag' any posts you want to send to the group. It then gets automatically boosted to all followers.
(I also keep accounts like this in my 'Essentials' List so I can avoid missing them).

@woozle My view is that the groups functionality is going to be external to the main Mastodon / ActivityPub layer. Most likely it will be some framework that uses Mastodon* but isn't Mastodon itself. Mastodon-as-transport-layer (with added goodies such as identity management, moderation, notifications, and another set of interfaces into the discussion).
Mastodon as comments-system on blogs seems one approach. I'm not sure that's what a fully-evolved system will look like, but it's at least in the direction of a solution-shaped object, as they say.
