🎉 Node.js worker threads: The magical solution that's "problematic" but somehow "works great for us." 🚀 Apparently, defying the expectations of Go, Rust, and Python developers is a badge of honor. 🙄 Because who needs reliable, straightforward #concurrency when you can have a 12-minute saga on moving internals? 🙃

Your doorbell camera is good for watching for porch pirates. Now it may also help spot wildfires. 🔥 Ring’s new Fire Watch feature uses AI to detect smoke and flames via outdoor cameras, alerting nearby users when Watch Duty flags a potential fire. It’s a reminder that the most powerful safety networks aren’t always built by governments, but by millions of ordinary devices quietly watching the edges of our lives.
There’s a philosophical shift here worth noticing. Surveillance tech is being reframed as community infrastructure, but only if trust, consent, and restraint are designed in from the start. Technology doesn’t become civic-minded by accident. Someone has to decide that it should.
The interesting question isn’t whether this works. It’s how many other “single-purpose” devices are waiting to be reimagined as public goods.
TL;DR
🧠 Ring cameras can now spot smoke and flames
⚡ Alerts are opt-in and community-driven
🎓 Consumer tech is drifting into civic duty
🔍 Trust and design choices will decide if it lastshttps://www.theregister.com/2026/01/07/ring_cameras_wildfire/

Do you hate #broligarchs?
#Billionaires? #AiSlop but still think there is merit in #AI?Here is my proposal for a stand alone.
OFFGRID COMMUNITY AI SYSTEM.That's right.Your very own co-op AI
The calculations are very much back of the envelope, first cut, but quite feasible.
A 32billion parameters, frontier level performance compatable open source #llm model. The power requirements is that of 3AC units including cooling. Serves 15-20 concurrent users. 40 households of 4 people each (taking into account actual AI model distributed use metrics and contention ratios)40 households, subscribing at $30/month over 2 years + power (solar). Train with your own datasets.
Entire set up takes half a rack.LETS GO!!!

What happens when an artist turns a community walk into a movement?
In Philadelphia, JJ Tiziou transformed his Walk Around Philadelphia project into a thriving community experience with the help of CiviCRM and Tadpole Collective. From managing registrations and surveys to building lasting connections, JJ’s work shows how open source tools can strengthen real-world communities.

Been thinking about digital access recently. A lot of the organizations that recondition and distribute computer in the community have tied themselves to corporate sponsors and forsaken open source.
I saw this with Austin Free-Net in #Austin and Free Geek here in #Portland
Now, with the forced migration to Windows 11, all that highly usable equipment becomes e-waste.
The failure to adopt user-friendly open source (such as Linux Mint) is jeopardizing #digitalDivide efforts.

Just read this movie review of Neptune Frost through the lens of #CommunityTech
It's codirected by Saul Williams and Anisia Uzeyman and it looks like a really interesting afrofuturist film.
Definitely going on my "to watch" list as the nights are now longer than the days.

TL;DR: Please recommend devices that can run on GNU/Linux. The PinePhone is abandoned, and I'm ready to keep my Android phone for only the absolute minimum and move the rest to a Linux phone. :douchi_cyberpunk: :terminal: :gnu:
Sauce:
I'm losing patience with everything in current tech. Everything is so dumb and difficult to use. I'm starting to hate my phone, or more precisely, the apps on it. They're so dumb. All I need is to know the camera IDs on my S25 Ultra so I can get a GCam mod to work. But guess what? To get an array of simple numbers and the IDs of my camera lenses, I need a whole stupid app. They are simply basic numbers; just give me a terminal.
To get information about the CPU, I again need an app. To download software, I again need an app.
App, app, app... everything needs an app. Nothing can be automated. There is no bash, only stupidity and misery. I can't update my GPU drivers because of some random corporate restriction, and they won't say why they make smartphones act like computers when they can't be used as one.
Imagine waiting for a laptop manufacturer to deliver an update for your GPU and hoping you can play a game, and then hoping you don't have to buy a new laptop because the manufacturer decides never to update the GPU again! :02_hyper: :apple_inc:

The #DrupalCon Nonprofit Summit just wrapped up and it was a big success.
Over 100 people got together for informative presentations and peer learning.
Highlights were:
- learning about the cool work happening with the Drupal CMS initiative that is making it a lot easier to get up and running with a Drupal website
- getting pumped about the #OpenWeb as a counterforce to Big Tech #enshittification
- sharing advice on doing more user research on websites -
The FLOSS movement has failed to build a true counter power to Big Tech's hegemony.
However, I see this potential for tech autonomy with community tech.
It builds on the nonprofit, community centered aspects of free and open source software, while addressing its shortcomings.
Boosts and opinions on what I've outlined in my blog post very welcomed.
