  1. One antique chip posted from the UK, a small piece of tape, a tiny act of vandalism, and finally my Amiga has achieved a new level of hackery. One whole megabyte of chip RAM!

    Just to stocktake here, what used to be a stock revision 5 Amiga 500 now has ...
    - a 68010 CPU
    - an upgraded Angus to support 1MB of chip RAM
    - an 8 meg RAM expansion and IDE controller
    - Kickstart 3.2 ROM
    - a gotek floppy emulator
    - 64GB SDD
    - Compact Flash card reader

    It's getting closer to done, I guess. Not much else to do without turning it into something completely different.

  2. "Apregio" was created for this year's AmigaGameJam. The horizontally scrolling shoot 'em up was created with the Scorpion Engine and is available in OCS and AGA versions. An A500 is specified as the minimum requirement, but an AGA computer with 4 megabytes of Fast RAM is recommended.

  3. I have now repeatedly heard the claim that #ADVENT was spread over #ARPANET. I'm pretty sure that this is a modern misconception since bandwidth was so limited in the 70s that 100s of kilobytes or even megabytes surely couldn't just be transferred at will.

    Can anyone shed more light on this? A proof one way or the other?

  4. It astounds me that so many companies - large, well-funded companies whose businesses utterly depend on email communications with their customers - so frequently send me multipart/alternative email containing a multi-megabyte text/HTML part, and a completely blank text/plain part.

    For those of you who aren't email and MIME nerds, the MIME type declaration "multipart/alternative" means "here are message parts containing more than one presentation of the same information, so show the user whichever one is most appropriate for them".

    And so users like me, who use a plaintext/console mail reader, or who have a preference for plain text selected in their reader, open a message like this and are greeted by a completely blank message.

    Well done, Company! Excellent, no notes.

    Maybe you should hire someone who cares about and understands email standards? Hint, hint - I'm available.

  5. Well I can call that a resounding victory. Dual booting Sorbet Leopard + Mac OS 9.22 on a #MacMiniG4

    It was good for one reason: seeing long-hated Internet Explorer launch instantly and use 17 megabytes of RAM. Somewhere along the way we must have done something wrong.

    Now onto the part where I install #Morphos. Something I never did. Hopefully the install will work from USB with same OpenFirmware commands.

  9. qalc looks pretty cool, like MATLAB #sym or #WolframAlpha in #Linux (even #termux !)

    ```termux
    $ pkg install qalc/stable
    ...
    $ qalc 'now + (500GB / (50MB / second))'
    now + ((500 × gigabyte) / ((50 × megabyte) / second)) ≈ "2022-08-30T00:23:47"
    ```

  10. Pretty happy with 's GUI (hat tip to @amin for the recommendation).

    4x hourly backup take only ~30 seconds to run and consume as little as half a megabyte.

    The backups aren't natively user-browsable like backintime's was, but I'll take that in exchange for not having incremental backups that are no less than 111MiB because everything is a symlink.

  11. I can't believe it. With this neat 1.8V adapter, I can actually read out the #firmware from my A300 DeskMini devices. \o/ I just need to be patient with the slow #CH341A and 16 megabytes. :D

    Best part: It works consistently. Woop woop!

  12. updates from #apple #ipad3 hacking: so it turns out that the ipad 3 only has about 3GB in the system partition and about 100MB (yes, as in megabyte) free.

    means that you can barely install anything in there.

    attempts were made to offload stuff to the userspace partition (/var). Bad news: the stashing app by coolstar is incompatible with ios 9.3.6.

    i might need to get in touch or start moving and linking stuff away from the system partition.

    does anyone have experience with this stuff?

  13. Asked if I could see our Azure billing info to figure out the cost for one Event Hub integration.

    Received a 274 MEGabyte spreadsheet of all the stuffs

    That seems sustainable…

  14. Can anyone recommend a #FOSS #swipe #keyboard for #Android?

    (In 2009, the original proprietary Swype keyboard worked superbly on Nokia S60 devices with hundreds of megabytes of memory and CPUs in the hundreds of megahertz range. I've never found another swipe keyboard that worked as reliably.)

  15. So yeah, even if I added my entire Fediverse posting and commenting history to the Wok I wouldn't budge the current size enough that adding a multi-megabyte screenshot would keep the current balance.

    So, no screenshot for the time being. (That's OK, you can find screenshots and videos of the beautiful #Teslagrad graphics everywhere on the net.)

  16. Does anybody know of any #Linux #CLI tools to manipulate #APNG files? I only want to change the frame rate, and rebuilding the file from the source PNG images is slow because the whole thing is huge (we're talking a few tens of megabytes per source image, for nearly a hundred of them), so I'd rather not go through the whole thing just to twiddle a few bits. Basically I'd need something like gifsicle, but for APNG.

  17. Here’s lookin’ at you, kid. It’s incredible what you can do with half a megabyte of RAM. #BadScan

  18. Just installed uBlock origin on Firefox.

    And saw a "media extractor" app on the #FirefoxAddons list
    Hmm I thought. And then checked how many megabytes it was.
    Expecting it to be 3 or so.
    But it was something like 97kb.
    About a thirtieth of the 3 megabytes I was expecting.

    Wow.

  19. draft - I know I have the Open Camera app set to a good setting where I can do relatively good quality one minute videos that are under 15 megabytes-But I almost wish that pixel camera itself had an option to setup an "economy mode for video" which we could quickly tap if desired

    My open camera video setting for quick economy videos with small file size:

    640x480
    bitrate - 200kbps

    I think everything else is default. Kinda wish pixel recorder itself had a quick shortcut to do videos like this so minute long videos would be like 10 megabytes instead of 100 megabytes

    And/or if we could put an openCamera shortcut on the lock screen that would help

  21. The snap available in the latest/edge channel/track is now based on Java 11.

    You can also set the maximum size of the allowed artifacts with "snap set hawkbit artifact-limit-size=..." (value is in megabytes).

  22. #MaraDNS 3.5.0034 released.

    In this release, I have added a bunch of code so that Deadwood can quickly block up to around 30 million hosts while using very little memory: The new code blocks over 200,000 hosts using under 10 megabytes of memory (the older code needed over 200 megabytes to block that many hosts).

    The code also has wildcard blocking support.

  24. I like , but I miss the possibility for interactivity.

    What if we took and made it streamable over the internet. Instead of downloading web pages (with dozens of megabytes of bloated junk), your browser simply downloaded a app that interacted locally. It could be given write access to its own isolated directory, and maybe read access to a specified url (for reading plain text from the internet, in order to be able to present more than 64k of content to the user)?

  25. @0xabad1dea This is how I feel every time the late great #TonyJay comes up. Most of my peers know him as Frollo or Shere Khan from Disney films; I always think of him as Megabyte.

    One of the few people to make me feel inadequate as a double bass. "Hello, Bob."

  26. "Today, everyone of us is being profiled and targeted. It
    seems that every day many megabytes of data are being collected about us. This leads to highly detailed digital doubles, which reflect our economic situation and consumption behavior, our social network, our behavior, psychology, and health. Such data can be used to manipulate our thinking, emotions, and behaviors. Most of such data uses today seem to happen without our knowledge and consent." #dirkhelbing

  27. Which means that the main HTML file is pretty huge and every time I add a project, the entire thing needs to get downloaded all over again. And that one file is over a MegaByte! So much for efficient caching.

  28. Regardless of what the label may say, there appears to be a capacity difference between 4.7 GB a DVD-R and DVD+R such that a 4,307,636,856 byte (aka 4.31GB) file will fit on the former with a couple of megabytes to spare but not the latter (4.7 GB indeed).
