I should rewrite the 1984 point of sale program, aim it to a terminal experience, and open source it just for the hell of it. I remember 98% of the functionality. I’m sure I could easily reproduce it in FreeBASIC.

One of the struggles in my current gig is my predecessor was all about using open source software as a base, modifying it, and then presenting it to marketing as a product to sell. To be fair, he did contribute to the repos. This is not uncommon. However, I want to create a solution from scratch, make an open source version available, and then offer up a commercial version for those that want support on the platform. Both approaches work, I’m just a control freak when it comes to code bases.

This thread was inspired as I sat in a restaurant watching a bartender and server stumble through the software solution called “Toast”.
Touchscreens have not made the experience better. The Internet goes down and the business is screwed. Even in 1984, if you lost power to a computer running my software, they didn’t lose any data. None. There was always some sort of trail.

A company in Indiana found my software on a BBS and asked to own it. I sold all the derivatives to them. They enhanced it greatly, I gave up the rights, and made a decent sum of cash from the sale.

Fun fact: my “IT career” started in 1984 at age 16, when I sold a home grown point of sale program as shareware on 8-inch and 5 1/4-inch floppies, using BASIC derivatives for different platforms.

I've also been playing around with task managers again this week. I just get too involved with how these fancy software solutions work instead of focusing on the task at hand. When all is said and done, todo.txt works best for me. #BrainChemistry
