#word - element of speech / writing
- French: mot
- Spanish: palabra
- German: Wort
- Dutch: woord
- Danish: ord
- Norwegian: ord
The Spanish comes from the Latin "parabola" meaning story, or comparison. See the French "parole" and the English "parable". (Is this where the "arc" of a story comes from).
-
#crime - a deed that is wrong, according to law or morality
- French: crime
- Spanish: crimen
- German: Verbrechen
- Dutch: misdaad
- Danish: forbrydelse
- Norwegian: forbrytelse
The German, Danish and Norwegian refers to "breach" as in "honored in the breach"; the Dutch is just like the English "misdeed"
-
#wind - moving air
- French: vent
- Spanish: viento
- German: Wind
- Dutch: wind
- Danish: vind
- Norwegian: vind
While all these look similar, the Romance languages got theirs from the Latin "ventus" while the rest was derived from a proto-Germanic word.
-
#language - how a particular country, community, or machine communicates
- French: langue
- Spanish: lengua, idioma
- German: Sprache
- Dutch: taal
- Danish: sprog
- Norwegian: språk
In English, French and Spanish, language is how you speak with your "tongue", in German, Danish and Norwegian it's how you "speak".
The Dutch "taal" is related to Dutch "tal", or count. As in, "recount a tale" or "tell a tale".

This #RandomEnglishWord apropos of nothing in particular
#law - a country's system of rules regulating the behaviour of its residents
- French: droit
- Spanish: ley
- German: Recht
- Dutch: wet
- Danish: lov
- Norwegian: lov
English, Danish, Norwegian: related to the Old Norse "lǫg" or that which is established.
French and German words: related to what is "right" or "straight".
Dutch "wet": comes from Old Dutch "witan": to know or to consider.
The Spanish comes from the Latin "lex" -
#sheep - the domestic mammal kept for wool and meat;
#mutton - the dish prepared from it- French: mouton, mouton
- Spanish: oveja, cordero
- German: Schaf, Hammelfleisch
- Dutch: schaap, schapenvlees
- Danish: får, fårekød
- Norwegian: sau, fårekjøtt
Again: while in the meadow, "sheep" is related to Germanic word, but once on the table, "mutton" is related to the French word, which is in turn related to the proto-Celtic "moltos" that blew over to Bretagne.
-
#cow - the domestic mammal kept for milk and meat;
#beef - the dish prepared from it- French: vache, boeuf
- Spanish: vaca, carne
- German: Kuh, Rindfleisch
- Dutch: koe, rundvlees
- Danish: ko, oksekød
- Norwegian: ku, storfekjøtt
While in the meadow, "cow" is related to Germanic and nordic words, but once on the table, "beef" is related to the French word.
Almost as if the English farmer raised it, the Norman invaders ate it.
-
#chicken - the domestic bird kept for eggs and meat;
#poultry - the dish prepared from it- French: poulet, volaille
- Spanish: pollo, aves de corral
- German: Huhn, Geflügel
- Dutch: kip, gevogelte
- Danish: kylling, fjerkræ
- Norwegian: kylling, fjærfe
The Old Dutch word "kieken" means chicken, and the Dutch "kuiken" means bird young.
So a French-derived word is used for when it's on the table.
Kylling is from Old Norse "kjúklingr" or gosling”.
-

There is the Dutch "poort" and Danish and Norwegian "port" but they mean gate rather than door. Like the English "port" can be thought of as a gateway.

Thanks for this #RandomEnglishWord @rombo !
Now I don't have to do one today.
As we say in the new world, "Never put off till tomorrow what you can do next week."
Oh wait. Maybe only my kids say that 😆 -
This #RandomEnglishWord in honour of @rombo who has stopped saying it 💜
#NaturalGas - #GreenhouseGas methane, ethane etc used for heating, electricity, #fertilisers, #plastics
- French: gaz naturel
- Spanish: gas natural
- German: Erdgas
- Dutch: aardgas
- Danish: naturgas
- Norwegian: naturgass
The "natural" label exempts from regulations its toxic components including radioactive materials.
The German and Dutch words name it for what it is: gas from the earth. #KeepItInTheGround
-
#fire - a burning. Usually requires oxygen, and usually results in flame, sometimes smoke.
- French: feu
- Spanish: fuego
- German: Feuer
- Dutch: vuur
- Danish: ild
- Norwegian: ild
There was an Old Saxon word, ēld, and an Old English word, ǣled. But in the end it seems English adopted the Germanic "fire" – although the out of control version is still "fire" in English where it is "Brand" in German and Dutch.
-
#today - the day after yesterday, and before tomorrow
- French: aujourd'hui
- Spanish: hoy
- German: Heute
- Dutch: vandaag
- Danish: i dag
- Norwegian: i dag
The French and Spanish are derived from the Latin "hodie" as in the epitaph inscription "Hodie mihi cras tibi" or My turn today, yours tomorrow.
The German "Heute" is related to Old English "hēodæġ" and the out-of-use Dutch "heden", both meaning today.

This #RandomEnglishWord may just make the word of the year
#heatwave - a period of days with above-normal temperatures
- French: vague de chaleur
- Spanish: ola de calor
- German: Hitzewelle
- Dutch: hittegolf
- Danish: hedebølge
- Norwegian: hetebølge
In each of the languages, it's "heat" and "wave" put together. Neat.
The image is of a traveling wave: a temperature crest that *passes*. What should we call persistent heatwaves like the ones happening this year?

I'm sharing my "Medieval Demographics for hex-describe" tool here if you want to look at it.
This is WIP. You'll see me futzing with it, probably.
Make a copy.
I've put instructions and a beginning FAQ in it.
I can't say this enough - this is tuned for my campaign. You should tweak this for your own campaign.
I should make this into a blog post.

The winter #amateurradio #hamradio projects have begun. Never had any success with #randomlengthwireantenna and 9:1 unun. Going to try again. So far things looking up. Now for the correct wire length for 80 - 10 meters with counterpoise. 🤞

@randomdent I mean I'd say it was forums or non-IRC chatrooms/communities. In a more true platform sort of way it was #Lunarstorm, a #Swedish online community.
-
@randomdent would forums/message boards count?
I can't remember if it was #Yahoo Groups (which i suppose would be "mailing lists"?) or the #GameFAQs message boards i used first.

Random encounters in Fimbulgard: at sea
Couriers of The Last:
Sect members from Verdens Ende (Worlds End), convinced they are the last living people on earth. Led by a Speaker, charged with communing with "phantoms" stubbornly roaming the world, to convince you you're dead. The rest of the crew wear blindfolds and ear muffs, lest they be led astray. All are adept at blindfighting with their oars. They are seeking one of their own, a youth eloped with a "ghost".
