On Saturday I cycled from Canberra to Bendora Dam and back. What an adventure!
Bendora Dam is between Corin and the Cotter dams and is directly west of Tuggeranong. Deep in the Namadgi National Park, it's fairly remote. We rode for 5 hours before coming across anyone else. The roads are dirt but well maintained - until we got lost.
Getting lost meant that we ended up at the dam itself which was a treat, though we didn't get to see the reservoir. But to try to hook up with the original route we had to push our bikes for an hour up the side of a peak to Bendora Hut! With an elevation of 1300m it's above the snowline and, though there was little snow, it was cold up there.
From Bendora Hut we had a fast, fun descent to Picadilly Circus and then a whole lot more back to Canberra.
It was about 6 hours of riding and a 9 hour trip all up. There were plenty of stops - an echidna, an arboretum, ice sheets, river crossing, a lyrebird and of course roos and wallabies.
Canberra's a great place to live.
Investigating the dam also led me to this - an interactive map of the city's water supply. Very cool.

Four more moths from #Canberra last night.
The first one, a #Leptozestis sp. (#Elachistidae) has incredible shining tufts of scales on its forewings - and a #fly hitchhiking on its head.
The gleaming white #moth is #Chasmina pulchra (#Noctuidae).
The small moth with a barred fringe and a brown saddle is #Moerarchis inconcisella (#Tineidae).
The moth with spread wings is the very common #Nacoleia rhoeoalis (#Crambidae).

The #canberraliberals can fuck right off.
In the unlikely event I lodge a postal vote, I'll send it straight to the AEC thankyou very much, not to the LIBERAL PARTY so they can harvest data, and may or may not forward my vote on.
What happens when the Lib party staff member or volunteer notices that a postal vote is not going their way? Any guarantee there are not a few votes accidentally falling off the table in to the bin?
[Edit: this process harvests information about the voter, not their vote itself. This spam is only offering to 'help' us request a postal vote from the AEC.]
I cannot believe this practice is legal. But of course it is, because #australianlabor agrees with the Libs they should be exempt from #privacy laws.

We did a bit of second-hand bookshopping yesterday afternoon in Canberra. This is my first time back in Canberra since the pandemic. You can never be sure what businesses survived the pandemic. It was good to see Canty's seems to be thriving.
I don't have a list of books I want any more since my successful trip to the Clunes Bootown festival earlier this year. I still have a sizeable pile of books to read, but I managed to get a nice pile of books from Canty's yesterday.

CW: modern weapons
Today, in the Majura artillery range, explodey things are exploding aplenty. It is 19km from me, and the wind is (sort-of) blowing from there towards me. The sound is dramatic. Not *loud* at this distance, but weird, and it expresses a deliberate pattern at times.
Goodness me, I know that they are doing it for testing/training, but it is *still* confronting. A direct reminder of the thing we see each night on the news: a bit of explosive, in the right place, is certainly going to ruin someone's day.

Canberra rally speaker and the Green Institute executive director, Tim Hollo, said the sentence was a “window into how our system is going into high gear to defend the right to suck the planet dry for profit”.
“We all need to use our democratic rights to call for Violet to be freed and to start building a real democracy that works for people and planet,” he said.

So, this recipe isn't vegan, but I'm sure it could be made vegan with soy-cheese (I just don't have a lot of experience with it). Though recipes like this would work with soy-cheese texture-wise.
White Beans with Mushrooms and Marinara
by Beth Moncel
What Other Vegetables can I Add?
"If you’re not into mushrooms or are just looking for other vegetables to add in addition to the mushrooms, there are definitely some great options. Zucchini would match really well with these flavors, as would spinach. For zucchini, I suggest slicing and sautéing after the mushrooms. For spinach, stir it in after the sauce has heated through, just until it is wilted. Eggplant would also be amazing, just dice and sauté after the mushrooms.
Ingredients
8 oz. mushrooms
2 Tbsp olive oil
1 pinch salt and pepper
2 cloves garlic
2 cups marinara (or more to your liking)
2 15oz. cans butter beans
1/2 tsp dried basil
1 pinch crushed red pepper
4 oz. mozzarellaInstructions
Preheat the oven to 400ºF. Wash and slice the mushrooms. Add the mushrooms, olive oil, and a pinch of salt and pepper to a deep skillet. Sauté the mushrooms until they have wilted and all the moisture in the skillet has evaporated.
While the mushrooms are sautéing, mince the garlic, drain and rinse the butter beans. Add the garlic to the skillet with the mushrooms and sauté for 2 minutes more.
Add the rinsed butter beans, marinara, basil, and red pepper to the skillet. Stir everything to combine, then allow it to heat through, stirring occasionally.
While the skillet is heating through, shred the mozzarella. Top the skillet with the mozzarella, then cover the skillet with foil. Transfer the skillet to the oven* and bake for 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese is melted.
Once the cheese has melted, remove the foil, switch the oven to broil, and broil the skillet for a few minutes more to brown the cheese (watch closely, as browning can happen quickly with the broiler). Serve hot, with garlic bread for dipping!"

My #Canberra #burbing dominance continues...
Riding every street in a suburb is tricky, but every footpath and track? Forgeddaboudit.
That's why I tap out at 75% completion. I consider it done without being a pain in the arse.
I finished Weston on Monday - after about 10 attempts to get to 75% - and that brings me to 14 suburbs burbed.
You do see some interesting parts of your city/town this way.
