I stumbled across Matilda at the Cohen St interchange this morning. Currently, the tow truck she's being put onto is her only means of transport. The mechanic I had a chat with, however, told me that they had acquired a bus of the same model with a working engine, so they're going to try to get the old girl back on the road again.

I guess I could have driven today; the roads are absolutely dead in Canberra. However, I can't imagine anything better than sitting on a bus and enjoying the ride.

From Friday the 12th, it will be free to use buses and lightrail from 6pm Fridays and 6pm Saturdays until the end of February.

Woden temporary bus interchange platform 4 will be temporarily closed from first service on Thursday 17 July 2025 and will reopen on Monday 21 July 2025. This is due to road works happening in the area.
Alternative bus stops:
- Platform 2 for route R4 services to Tuggeranong, R5 services to Lanyon and route R6 services to City ANU.
- Platform 6 for route 60, 61, 63, 64 and 65 outbound services. -
At Last! Transport Canberra have finally released their GPS data for third party app builders. 😍
We can now have a view of what all the buses are doing in our area of interest, rather than tediously searching per route or bus-stop. *big sigh of relief ...

Is MyWay+ Transport Canberra's biggest disaster to date?
We still have buses operating with validators and PIDs not working, still no 3rd party data available, still no ticket machines and still no working PIDs at interchanges and major stops.
Its been 6 months.

Well, the new MyWay+ system is definitely having teething trouble - I got a free ride on my first leg this morning because the driver didn't know how to use the new system (too complicated, he said), and on the second leg I wound up tapping on twice instead of tapping off.
Also, whilst cards work, the QR codes didn't.

And Canberra's bus drivers are on strike this morning. So much for today's plans.

I am a happy camper: I managed to get the MyWay+ app installed (go to the Transport Canberra website and follow the links - there's a link to the Google app store for the app as well as the Apple app store. I tried searching for it in Google Play, but it wouldn't produce the app.). The results are a lot like looking up the data on Google Maps, so I'm not entirely sure how live everything is yet, but hey - it's a very good next step!
NB: this information may be obsolete tomorrow.

@treleanor I was just rummaging around in Google Maps, and if you poke the little bus stop icon on the map it gives you a list of what's scheduled and recently department from that stop. The only thing I am not certain about is whether or not it's live information. I shall investigate further tomorrow.

Here's a fun photo from a bit ago. It might look familiar because the ACT Government shared it to mark the 5-year anniversary of Canberra's light rail.
Originally there was some doubt regarding my photo's authenticity. Although it appears I'm near the Light Rail Vehicle (LRV), I was actually at a distance.
The shot was captured with a FE 70-200 F4 lens at 200mm. I took it from a low angle on Bunda Street in the city center.

New Canberra bus timetable same crappy service.
In order to actually get home the latest I can leave Civic on a weeknight (including Friday night) is about 9:15 so I can make it to the last 70 bus at Woden.
Daytime during the weekend buses are pretty much 2 hourly.
Because their timetables are so bad and inconvenient fewer people catch the bus then Transport Canberra can use dwindling passengers numbers to prove that they don't really need to provide these services after all.
I'm so over it! Especially after they announced this new timetable as providing more bus services more often. See this announcement (image below) trumpeting their regular service during the day on weekends on regular routes.I guess every 2 hours is regular in a way.

@danielbowen @Transportist reminds me of the (ACT) National Capital Development Commission’s 1975 Annual Report.
I grew up in deep suburban Canberra; discovering this report blew my mind. In 1985 Canberra's per capita car usage rate was lower than any other Aussie city due to Swiss-style timed bus transfers and the below road policies.
A quote from a peer reviewed paper by the late Dr Paul Mees:
> The new policy, which is dated July 1974 and endorsed by the NCDC and Department of the Capital Territory, states that new roads will be designed to ‘provide a high level-of-service for off-peak freight and private car usage’. By contrast, ‘[u]nneccessary use of the private car for commuting purposes will be discouraged. Any shortfall in peak-period road capacity or parking space will be offset by the provision of improved public transport’. Improved public transport will be supplemented by a network of bike paths. Finally, the policy accepts to need for ongoing public transport operating subsidies (NCDC, 1975, p. 65).
> Usage rates grew rapidly in the following decade in all cities except Canberra, and by 1985 Canberra’s usage rates were lower than any of the other cities (Newman & Kenworthy, 1991, p. 33).

CW: FYI about buses in Canberra
I got some useful information from a somewhat cranky bus driver here in #Canberra this afternoon: Commonwealth Ave, near the roadworks where London Circuit is, will be reduced to one lane each way. As a result of this, #TransportCanberra has increased the run times of the R2 and R4 buses by 20 minutes.
This is already causing timing issues, since the extra lane closures haven't happened yet, and I am clearly going to have to take a giant metaphorical chill pill about bus travel from now on.
