  1. NASA management also promotes #TeamRadar at #SBAG , highlighting the #2011UL21 and #2024MK observations two weeks ago: echo.jpl.nasa.gov/asteroids/ju

    Thank you again, management.

  2. More details about the #TeamRadar observations of asteroids #2024MK and #2011UL21 from #Goldstone and #Canberra as they flew past Earth this past week:

2011 UL21 turns out to have a small satellite orbiting it at something over 3 kilometers away.

And 2024 MK is really tumbling.

  7. It has been a busy weekend for #TeamRadar at #Goldstone and #Canberra .

And thanks go to the optical observers who obtained lots of lightcurve data on #2024MK from Chile and South Africa.

New radar imagery of 2024 MK from @NASAJPL ’s Goldstone Solar System Radar. These images - taken when the #asteroid was about 240K miles away - reveal 2024 MK is about 500 ft. wide. Stay tuned for more #2024MK science.

  12. Asteroid Day got off to a wild one as Earth had a very close shave from newly discovered Asteroid 2024 MK. This unusually large 156m NEO Apollo rock safely flew between Earth and the Moon this morning at 9:45 am. This was only discovered on June 16th and shows why we need earlier detection of these Near-Earth Objects.

    #PlanetaryDefence #2024MK

  16. @tendstofortytwo @badastro #2024MK will have apparent magnitude about 8.75 near closest approach (depending on how its surface reflects light).

That is not visible to unaided human eyes, but large binoculars or small telescopes will be able to see it in dark skies.

  17. ESA: "Two large asteroids safely pass Earth just 42 hours apart" - esa.int/Space_Safety/Planetary

But these are #2024MK and #2011UL21, which will be 0.75 lunar distances and 17 lunar distances away respectively this week.

    In other words:

A pretty normal week, astronomically speaking.

Except for those of us who study piles of rock in space; for whom it is a little busy.

  18. Addendum:

I am informed of lightcurve observations of #2024MK planned from the southern hemisphere over the next day or two.

Email still works faster than Mastodon.

  19. For the astronomers:

The newly-discovered asteroid #2024MK was picked up by ATLAS from South Africa on June 16. It will be flying a lunar distance away on the 29th.

    #TeamRadar is planning observations: echo.jpl.nasa.gov/asteroids/ju .

Does anyone happen to know of any lightcurve observations of this one yet? It would help to know the rotation period. It is still pretty far south for those of us in the north.

(I will ask around the usual sources and we will see if Mastodon is faster or not.)

  20. Smaller regional hazards like ~200m #2024MK are far more numerous, dimmer targets to find in telescopes. They can still take us by surprise. With 2 weeks warning of #asteroid impact, no time to deflect orbit. Possible to evacuate projected impact area. #astronomy #LowFlyingRocks

  21. #NASA 2019 article "10 Things You Should Know About Planetary Defense" describes efforts to find & catalog each potentially hazardous #asteroid (PHA). Rate of discovery indicates 90% of world-killer sized PHAs now known. jpl.nasa.gov/news/10-things-yo #2024MK #astronomy #LowFlyingRocks

  22. A 200m #asteroid like #2024MK is "city killer" size. If it had been on an impact trajectory, it would make ~1.5mi/2km crater, and blast/bury everything out to 3mi/5km. For comparison:
    • Meteor Crater AZ impactor 50m
    • 2013 Chelyabinsk airburst 18m

  23. Newly-discovered #asteroid 2024 MK (diameter 200m ± 80m) will pass Earth on June 29 2024-Jun-29 13:47 at a distance of ~295310 km or 0.8 lunar distance (80% distance to the Moon). Once per decade rare occurrence. ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/tools/sbdb_lo #2024MK #astronomy #LowFlyingRocks
