  1. It's still rare for an #asteroid to be detected on impact trajectory. Bigger shooting stars at night are mostly missed opportunities. As a #spacegeek but not an astronomer, I'm not in their discussions. So I noticed it on a monitor on my wall. It mostly displays aircraft activity around PDX and the Pacific Northwest. But 2 panels are space related, my own software, using NOAA aurora & NASA asteroid data. #2026JN4 stood out as a blue line on the close asteroid passes. #astronomy #LowFlyingRocks

  6. #asteroid #2026JN4 is apparently not being added to the official list of pre-impact detections because there were not enough observations to nail down an estimated impact point and there were no reports to confirm air or ground impact. More observations could change that. (ref @michael_w_busch ) mastodon.online/@michael_w_bus #astronomy #PlanetaryDefense #PlanetaryDefence #LowFlyingRocks

  11. At approximately 2026-May-15 13:44 UTC, #asteroid #2026JN4 impacted Earth's atmosphere shortly after discovery. The 1m-wide rock was not a threat. Most that size are simply not discovered before becoming a common fireball meteor. The previous impactor discovered before impact was in December 2024. ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/tools/sbdb_lo #astronomy #PlanetaryDefense #PlanetaryDefence #LowFlyingRocks

  16. I updated my program that lists close passes by NEO (Near-Earth Object) asteroids available in #NASA JPL data. We were warned of a flood of new objects discovered by the Vera Rubin Observatory. I changed the program from hard-coded watching within 2 lunar distances, to a configurable distance. For this niche, the flood is more of a rising tide. For now I set it back to 2LD. Most show up as discovered just before to days after the closest approach time. #LowFlyingRocks #asteroid #astronomy #space

  21. "Phew! NASA Rules Out Asteroid Smashup on the Moon in 2032" by @universetoday / @alanboyle - Astronomical observations of #asteroid #2024YR4, including from #NASA #WebbSpaceTelescope🔭 #JWST, refined its orbit estimate to rule out impact with the #Moon on its Dec 22, 2032 flyby. Possibility of Earth impact on that pass was already ruled out in April 2025. The 60m diameter rock would be a serious threat. universetoday.com/articles/phe #astronomy #PlanetaryDefense #PlanetaryDefence #LowFlyingRocks #space

  26. "Asteroid 2024 YR4's collision with the moon could create a flash visible from Earth, study finds" by @LiveScience - #Asteroid #2024YR4 was briefly subject of concern until Earth impact was ruled out. It's still being studied for potential impact with the #Moon on Dec 22, 2032. New paper estimates impact areas, all on the side facing Earth. A tiny fraction might be in darkness, visible without optics. livescience.com/space/asteroid #astronomy #PlanetaryDefense #PlanetaryDefence #LowFlyingRocks #space

  31. "What was the loudest sound ever recorded?" by @LiveScience - The loudest sound by even distant crude instruments was either 1883 Krakatau volcano explosion or 1908 Tunguska meteor airburst. 46. "Asteroid 2025 UC11 flew past Earth at 0.01 LD" by The Watchers - Discovered 7 hours before its closest approach to Earth, it's good that #2025UC11 was only a 0.5-1m diameter rock. Closest approach was on Oct 31 at 0.017 lunar distance or 6600km from the center of the Earth - altitude ~220km above the surface. The good news: we (all of humanity) are getting better at detecting even small asteroids. But there are still surprises. watchers.news/2025/11/03/aster #asteroid #astronomy #LowFlyingRocks #space
