  1. It's still rare for an #asteroid to be detected on impact trajectory. Bigger shooting stars at night are mostly missed opportunities. As a #spacegeek but not an astronomer, I'm not in their discussions. So I noticed it on a monitor on my wall. It mostly displays aircraft activity around PDX and the Pacific Northwest. But 2 panels are space related, my own software, using NOAA aurora & NASA asteroid data. #2026JN4 stood out as a blue line on the close asteroid passes. #astronomy #LowFlyingRocks

  3. This Aussie Town Might Be a Portal to Space (Hear Me Out)

I was meant to be installing an observatory dome at Perth Observatory… but somewhere along the way, I stumbled into Southern Cross, Western Australia — a tiny outback town where every street is named after a star.

Like, actual stars. You’ve got Sirius Street, Betelgeuse Boulevard, Vega Terrace… I thought I was in a galaxy brain fever dream. 😅

Come with me as I explore this unexpectedly cosmic place, get weirdly emotional about signage, and wonder how no one told me this place existed sooner.

If you’re into astronomy, quirky travel discoveries, or just want to hear me lose my mind over road names, this one’s for you.

  4. A year ago on the return trip from #SolarEclipse2024, I stopped at Arizona's Meteor Crater. It's officially Barringer Crater, after the man who first proposed it might be an impact crater, tried to understand its geology, but died before he could prove it. Later it became the first proven impact site after geologist Eugene Shoemaker noticed its geology was like Nevada's nuclear test blast craters, but vastly bigger. spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112265 #astronomy #geology #space #spacegeek #travel

  9. A year ago on the return trip from #SolarEclipse2024, I posted a picture (which I took the previous day) of the Sierra Madera impact crater near Fort Stockton, Texas. The crater is 8mi/13km wide and US Hwy 385 goes through the middle of it. But the highway is the only spot you can see it since the rest of the crater is private property. So it was easy to keep the stop quick, take a few pictures and continue the drive. spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112258 #astronomy #geology #space #spacegeek #travel

  14. A year ago I was on the drive back home on the #SolarEclipse2024 road trip. From the far point of the trip in Houston, I made some more #space related stops on the way home: Sierra Madera impact crater near Fort Stockton TX, NSF's Very Large Array radiotelescope near Socorro NM and Meteor Crater near Flagstaff AZ. Overnight stops were at Austin TX, Las Cruces NM, Flagstaff AZ and Brigham City UT. #astronomy #space #spacegeek #travel

  19. One year ago, April 10, 2024... 2 days after #SolarEclipse2024, I visited NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston. That part of my itinerary was intended to be an easy success in case the weather turned the eclipse viewing into a failure. Fortunately, that succeeded too. spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112252 #astronomy #NASA #space #spacegeek #travel

  24. One year ago, the day after the April 8, 2024 total #SolarEclipse2024, I continued south from Dallas to Houston to see NASA Johnson Space Center, with a quick peek before the visitor center closed for the day. I returned for more there the next day. That day was the road trip's farthest point with dinner at the coast in Galveston. After that everything was on the journey back home. #spacegeek #travel
