  1. More #shingleback news from #Bywong.
The sunny weather continues. A middling sized shingleback came up to the kitchen door. Very much looking like their reptile brain can remember that this is the place where raisins get served.
Have no raisins, he/she got two sultanas instead.
Shingleback seems apalled that standards have slipped since last year. Fliptop head and hissing not deployed, but my crocs were gummed in protest.

  2. Day before #spring in #Bywong
A #shingleback, looking fatter than the should - the winter hibernation has been very short - sunning themselves in the dappling of a blackwattle.
An #echidna hiding oh-so-effectively from me while I collected kindling. (Echidnas subscribe to the three-year old human school of hiding - I can't see you, with my head buried in this tussock, so you cannot see me!)
    Just now a wedgetailed eagle.

Bloody noioce, even if it is all a month too early.

  3. Drove #Bywong to #MerewetherBeach today. Afternoon tea at the kiosk/cafe watching people go by. Got a swim in. Caught a wave.

Why do men wear "boardshorts"? All that fabric to chafe with the sand. Are they mad? I wear the least that's socially acceptable.

  4. This morning, an eastern shrike thrush is singing near the house. We are not sure if he is the same one as before winter, but he is not circling the house in the same way, and his song cycle is more ... bitty? scattered? less themed? Something like that.

No photo because he is hard to find, and I've only a phone camera lens, not a fancypants telescope. Just imagine a medium sized battleship grey nothing special looking bird. Then lookup their song. They put all their wonderfulness into sound, none into light.

  5. Today, at lunch, a wedge tailed eagle. No partner, hopefully he/she is on an egg or two in the nest?

On my walk, the white roo has returned! He's bigger, more muscled and much more confident. He's been away from his mum up here for some months.

Tonight, as we drove up the driveway, I had to stop and give way to a wombat. Also fat and well.

  6. CW: Talking about the weather.

Yesterday, my partner and I took a moment from the earthmoving to sit in the sun and enjoy a chicken and green-thing-from-the-garden wrap. Nice

    There we saw this flower.

The trouble is, this one flowered in the second half of March (in #Bywong, near #Canberra). Sometime after that, the first frost should come, and all the bulbs hunker down for winter.

But this photo was taken TODAY. It is mid May.
That poor pink flower bulb doesn't know what the date is anymore. #ClimateChange has buggered up its calendar. The frost hasn't come. Today it was 9° overnight and now it's 20°.

So it is flowering a _second_ time.

When you next see a farming or rural person; ask them if their bulbs flowered twice.

Ask them if they think that's a problem.

Ask them if that happened for their parents.

Ask them what they think it'll be like for their children.

  7. @cyclicautomata Hitting a roo is a terrible thing. Your post made me freshly sweat from mine four months ago. I hate it.

With my foot resting on the brake, and the car at 55kmph under cruise control, I have a _just_ better than even chance of not hitting a roo at night. Any faster than that, and I cannot stop in time.

So, you'll find me at pootling along at 55 in an 80 or 100 zone near #Bywong at night. Proud of it. I pull over and stop to let others pass.

At 110kmph on the Federal highway, I am simply playing the odds. There's no sense in braking nor swerving, it cannot possibly help and the result can only be somewhere between terrible and catastrophic, no matter what I do.

My car, a 2020 Subaru has ADAS. The roos seem to be utterly invisible to it. My partner's 2025 VW seems the same.

  8. @warblington In #Bywong, I am seventeen thousand kilometres away from the #Warblington level crossing. I do love to occasionally find out what the boom gates might be doing in the next half hour. Thank you for this bit of whimsy in an otherwise too serious world.

A small point though; I feel that the minimum open time is probably a minute or two? Predictions like this one might allow Marty and Doc through, but lesser cars would struggle, I think.

Also: Saying 'Warblington' is a marvellous feeling in the mouth. Please tell me it is pronounced as-written, and not something like Bicester or Magdalen?

  9. Steady steady rain in #Bywong.

No lunar eclipse, but masses of little froggies moving about in the night, looking for their next damp home. Will do an eclipse another time. the rain is absohoppinglutely marvellous.
There's nothing quite like overflowing the last #watertank in the string. I can loiter endlessly under the shower. I could learn Italian.

  10. Rain all night. Steady. The frogs are very glad. #Bywong

  11. We have a tiny bat in the house!
Not at all sure how the sillybilly got in (probably when we came in tonight) but it does not see the way out, and thinks our attempts of catching with tea towels are terrific fun.
We will go to bed. And to the hammerbarn in the morning, to get some vast netting or similar to try again tomorrow. Until then, we have a professional bug catcher on the job, I guess.

  12. Today in #Bywong. Bright, cool and sunny. The local mob of roos have moved past the house and up the ridge.

  13. Google asked: 'Industry'?
Horseshit options include 'aAdvertising and marketing', 'Education'

In #Bywong, say: 'What does your company make or do?'

If the answer is 'we make earthmoving equipment', then you can call that 'industry', otherwise, #FuckOff.

  14. LinkedIn 'reached out' to me today

Use 'called', 'mailed', 'yelled at', 'hit up', 'prodded', ... as the context demands. In #Bywong, you 'reach out' to get a fresh roll when you are caught unprepared by the cardboard cylinder. You 'reach out' to get a ticket at a shopping centre car park.

Fuck off LinkedIn, altogether and in all your constituent parts.
    Fuck off 'reached out'.

    #FuckAmericanaFriday

  15. Inspired by the common sense of Trump requiring full access to every thoughtcrime before I cross any USA border, and determined that as long as I live, and America is fascist, I want to lay down a solid bank of material.

    It is #FuckAmericanaFriday

My duty today will be to report American influence in #Bywong culture, give the correct version and tell American brown nosers to #fuckoff.

  16. windy AF in #bywong.
off dogs chains blown etc yadda

  17. fuggy foggy foggy in/over/on/around/through #bywong

  18. @Brett over here in #bywong, it is a bloody good kite day.

I said, BLOODY GOOD KITE DAY.

  19. Good News from #Bywong Today

The sorrel has recovered now that the bunnies are kept out by a new fence.

The white kangaroo is growing up fast.

I had to give way to a shingleback on the driveway (my partner had to do the same for an echidna yesterday).
It is shingleback sexytrain season, be careful out there boys and girls.

The second coat of paint seems dry enough to apply a third tonight, and the cement filler (in the floortiles where the wall isn't anymore) worked a charm.

  20. #Spring in #Bywong. The magpies are set to lay, the wrens are busy and chatty, the bulbs that Peter, the very nice bonkers man planted all those tears ago are UP.

And #bunnies. My lovely #sorrel absolutely murdered in the night by the bloody bunnies. They've discovered a leaky section of electric fence, lucky buggers.

  21. It is exactly this time of year in the hills around #Canberra.
Accurate to within a few days.

  22. Morning all, -1° by the shonky thermometer outside my office door this morning. Have turned heater on because my fingers weren't typing properly.

  23. @si_fuller Econometric anecdata: time.
Horse poo is $5 per bag around #Bywong. I have no idea what size 'a bag' is though.
Also, I pay more for Alpacapoo (I strongly believe that this is all one word), I think it is $8per bag and the bag is a 2/3rds full chicken feed bag.
Say $8 for 15L? of alpacapoo.

  24. CW: sweary rant about the end of capitalism

    Dear [email protected]

Regarding your question "Could you go to the depot to pick up the spatulas?"

The spatulas are apparently in #Sydney (according to Random Courier Company, that you employed, I have no relationship with RCC, and they certainly don't care about my needs very much.)

    Please google "Sydney".
    I am in #Bywong.
    Please google "Bywong".
Isn't it lovely? Just outside our capital.

The trip from Bywong to Sydney and back takes six hours, with the necessary breaks for; micturation, hydrocarbon injection and dealing with the almost inevitable kangaroo death.

No, I will not pick up the spatulas.
