  1. Colocasia coryli (Linnaeus, 1758)

Mothing season has officially started!! 🥳
New season means new experiments: this is a stack of 13 handheld images. Quick pre-processing in DarkTable, stacking in Zerene Stacker, basic color processing in GIMP, quick sharpening in Microsoft Photos (for some reason it seems to work pretty decently).

  2. Here's another elegant NZ moth for you. This one's called the Alpine Treasure Owlet (*Ichneutica maya*).

It's mostly seen up in the mountains in the South Island but also in the mountains of the lower North Island. I saw this one up at Boyle Village in the North Canterbury Southern Alps.

As is the case with many NZ moths, the "life history in the wild of this species is unknown, nor has its larval host species been confirmed" (quoting its Wikipedia page, which is referencing Robert Hoare's 2019 Fauna Series revision of the genus). We've got 144 observations of it so far on #iNaturalist.

  7. Identification from #caterpillar #photos is often difficult. The photos seemingly show the #blackspotchestnut, a #moth of the #Noctuidae (an alternative could be Eupsilia transversa, I think less likely). It is widespread in Central/Southern #Europe. The #moths hatch in October and #overwinter, with interrupted periods during which they feed on fallen fruits, etc.. Caterpillars are found in #May/June. #biodiversizy #winteradaptations

  15. I (badly) photographed this (currently identified) #Noctuidae species in #Merimbula #NSW. It was only when I transferred the images to my laptop that I saw the #pseudoscorpion crawling away - presumably it arrived by phoresis on the #moth - and how attractive the small beetle (#Staphylinidae) is with its pearly elytra.

Sorry not to have got a closer look at the pseudoscorpion - I love them so much.

  16. Four more moths from #Canberra last night.

The first one, a #Leptozestis sp. (#Elachistidae) has incredible shining tufts of scales on its forewings - and a #fly hitchhiking on its head.

The gleaming white #moth is #Chasmina pulchra (#Noctuidae).

The small moth with a barred fringe and a brown saddle is #Moerarchis inconcisella (#Tineidae).

The moth with spread wings is the very common #Nacoleia rhoeoalis (#Crambidae).

Good to see, but I'll just say ermine moths are amateurs at this. Try the Australian #WhistlingMoths (#Noctuidae, #Agaristinae).

And (#sigh) - to forestall the comments that always come when mentioning #Australian #wildlife. Our #biodiversity is not out to kill you. It's much less lethal to humans than honeybees, dogs or cows.
