Is Sunak actually proposing conscripting Irish Nationalist and Republican teenagers in the North of Ireland to the British Army? If so, lol, good luck with that.
If not, I’d just point out that the North of Ireland was
exempted from conscription in both WW1 and WW2. If it is to be exempted from National Service, maybe a lot of teenagers would find changing their home addresses to Belfast or Derry an attractive option? -

In another triumph of #AI, Microsoft Bing thinks that being a “critic of Woke” is the same thing as being “a Woke critic”.
(Thin-skinned, unfunny fascist prick #AndrewDoyle is in the news today because his #transphobic Fringe show featuring #Glinner was pulled by the venue)

Not exactly a lost episode, but tomorrow #BBCRadio4Extra will air an episode of #TheGoonShow from 1957 never broadcast in the UK before: The Missing 10 Downing Street.

An autopsy in #Maigret and the Headless Corpse reveals a peculiarly French conception of what does and does not constitute being an alcoholic. Note that this is around lunchtime and Maigret himself seems to be on to his third drink of the day.

I like to imagine a 19th Century Romantic poet reciting the lyrics of Butterfly by #CrazyTown. It starts off perfectly well for two lines, but soon goes off the rails.

CW: Death, bad taste joke
Personally I think the best way to pay tribute to #PeeWeeHerman would be to arrest #Blippi on trumped-up obscenity charges and hound him from public life.

Happy Birthday to Nick Mason, born on 27 January 1944. In addition to being Pink Floyd’s drummer and the only member of the band to play on every album, Nick has produced for #RobertWyatt, #Gong and #SteveHillage.
Most recently he formed Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets, a live band playing early Floyd numbers, with #GaryKemp on guitar and vocals.

I was going to say it’s like an Ealing comedy scripted by the Coen Brothers, but we had that and it was shit. This is much better. #CaptainTom #CaptainTomMoore

I don’t really understand this story.
Mushy peas, tartare sauce and curry sauce are extras and cost more. In the rightly-celebrated Magpie in #Whitby they’re all listed for £1.75 each. Also the standard cod or haddock is £16 and chips are £2.50, so essentially the same as Rick Stein’s in #Padstow.
“Fish and chips” hasn’t been a really cheap meal for a long time, and anyone complaining probably hasn’t been to a good local chippy recently.

As @kathimmel has reminded us, it’s Jessica Mitford’s birthday. I strongly recommend her autobiography, Hons and Rebels, and direct you towards @kathimmel’s feed again for a much more stunningly beautiful depiction of her, and also Decca’s version of Right Said Fred (with Maya Angelou!).

A nicely cutting little paragraph from an excellent #NewYorker article on #Simenon, here dealing with his boast of 10,000 lovers (revised to 1,200 by one of his wives): https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2011/10/10/crime-pays-joan-acocella

Also, avoiding spoilers, the ending shows that #Maigret books are not Christie-type cosy crime puzzlers, where we meet several suspects and get to know them in detail to choose the killer
#Simenon instead uses the police procedural to explore the (often poignant) world of the victim or those close to them, with little interest in the actual murderer.
I feel like #SjöwallandWahlöö did this with #MartinBeck, but to a clearer political purpose. Simenon was a great writer but with less noble aims.

Hahahahahahahaha absolutely fuck that nonsense, and a bonus fuck you to #JackDorsey and #BlueSky and all.
Corrosively stupid narcissistic wreckers, burning the world down around themselves because they think they’re clever.

In the early 1980s there were two major takes on the #CaptainMarvel archetype in British #comics. One was a massive commercial success and has consistently been in print since then. The other wasn’t.

Daughter has just taken delivery of the key part of her Halloween costume: a #BellatrixLestrange / ‘80s #Cher / Slash from #GunsNRoses wig.
Expecting to get some re-use out of this one as a result, but from time to time it might smell of cigarettes, brimstone or sailors.

Richard Harris was born on this day in 1930.
Another towering, storied Irish talent who was much more than a “Harry Potter actor”, he also had a big hit with MacArthur Park in 1968, written by the brilliant Jimmy Webb (of Wichita Lineman, Highwayman and many others).
Listen to it today, perhaps watch this live performance, and remember to bring your cake inside at the first sign of showers.
