  1. @allanb

I knew about his involvement with Dr Who (especially the Daleks) but not the rest. Certainly not that he started as a comedy writer!

(Perhaps apocryphally with #SpikeMilligan buying a sketch off Terry because he looked hungry & could use the money to eat)

  4. Today's rando op-shop find was this 1976 first edition hardcover of 'William McGonagall: The Truth at Last' by #SpikeMilligan & Jack Hobbs.

For the princely sum of $2 it's in surprisingly excellent condition - even the dust jacket is near perfect, aside from a very faded jacket spine.

Never even seen a hardback before - only the Penguin paperback with the colour illustration of McGonagall wielding a sword whilst wearing a saucepan in his head.

    Anyway, an unexpected treat. 😎

  5. Let in the light

#SpikeMilligan was a renowned Irish comedian, writer, musician, poet, playwright, and actor.

He is best known for co-creating and starring in the influential BBC radio comedy series The Goon Show, alongside Peter Sellers and Harry Secombe.

Milligan’s work significantly influenced British surreal and alternative #comedy, paving the way for Monty Python’s Flying Circus.

    It's tempting to think that #Baroque / #DerivativeWorks are a thing of the #21stCentury.

And then within hours of tripping over the whimsical illustrations by #ToveJansson for a 1962 Swedish translation of #TheHobbit you, or more precisely, I, find a 1968 #BBC radio play adaptation of The Hobbit that, I kid you not, seems to have #SpikeMilligan's #Moriarty character from #TheGoons playing #Gandolf, and the dwarves sounding more like cherubs.

  8. Q5 by #SpikeMilligan, which preempted #MontyPython by several months.

John Cleese, on a conversation with Terry Jones: “We both happened to watch Spike Milligan's Q5, and one or the other of us phoned up and said kind of jokingly but also rather anxiously, 'I thought that's what we were supposed to be doing?' And the other one said, 'That's what I thought too.'”

  9. Milligan's Meaning of Life: An Autobiography of Sorts

Spike Milligan's legendary war memoirs are a hilarious and subversive first-hand account of the Second World War, as well as a fascinating portrait of the formative years of this towering comic genius, most famous as writer and star of The Goon Show.

  14. Just been reminded by someone that today would have been the birthday of the late, great Spike Milligan.

Loved listening to old recordings of the Goon Show when I was young, the absurdist humour appealed to me hugely (friends and I even performed some at school). Soon found his war memoirs, and the Q series. Evolution of British comedy would have been very different without Spike.
