  1. CW: Complessi familiari, sessualità

    Nato Venerdì 13. 🐈‍⬛

  2. I’ve finished my first real book in #French: Maigret’s premier case « Pietr-le-Letton » by Georges #Simenon. Having only read short crime stories and abridged texts in French before, this one was much more complex regarding the language and also the plot. But I’ve really enjoyed it and can totally recommend #Maigret novels to other learners. Any ideas on suitable contemporary books for French learners? Maybe something romantic? #francais #language #languagelearning #crime #books #bookstodon

  3. A nicely cutting little paragraph from an excellent #NewYorker article on #Simenon, here dealing with his boast of 10,000 lovers (revised to 1,200 by one of his wives): newyorker.com/magazine/2011/10

  4. Also, avoiding spoilers, the ending shows that #Maigret books are not Christie-type cosy crime puzzlers, where we meet several suspects and get to know them in detail to choose the killer

#Simenon instead uses the police procedural to explore the (often poignant) world of the victim or those close to them, with little interest in the actual murderer.

I feel like #SjöwallandWahlöö did this with #MartinBeck, but to a clearer political purpose. Simenon was a great writer but with less noble aims.

  5. I've read the 1941 book Cours d'Assises by George #Simenon (translated in Dutch as De zaak Louis Bert). Simenon is famous for his detective novels starring inspector #Maigret, so it was very interesting to me that this psychological novel was a sort of anti-detective, anti-policier. The protagonist is a small-time crook who ends up in a monstrous judicial machinery that cares only about itself, its process, its judgements, and not at all about the people it judges.

  6. In the past eleven months, I got 30 new books, of which I've by now read 13. I wonder whether that's a justifiable reading rate...

(Posting this now rather than next week, because I'll be receiving a box set of 15 of George Simenon's psychological novels...)

#Simenon

  10. The prodigiously prolific Georges Simenon, born #OTD in 1903 (photographed by Life magazine, 1958) #Simenon #Maigret
