En 1729 protagonizó una de las operaciones financieras más famosas del siglo XVIII.
Junto al matemático Charles Marie de la Condamine descubrió un error en el sistema de la lotería estatal francesa.
Aprovechando aquel fallo legal compraron grandes cantidades de billetes premiables y obtuvieron una fortuna gigantesca.
No hicieron nada ilegal, pero dejaron en ridículo al gobierno francés.Gracias a aquella riqueza consiguió algo muy poco común para un intelectual de su tiempo: independencia económica absoluta.
Ya no dependía de mecenas ni de nobles para sobrevivir.En el terreno sentimental tampoco llevó una vida convencional.
Durante dieciséis años convivió con Émilie du Châtelet, una de las mujeres más brillantes de la Europa del siglo XVIII.
Matemática, física, filósofa y traductora de Newton, compartió con Voltaire laboratorios, investigaciones científicas y una intensa relación amorosa.
Lo más sorprendente es que el marido de Émilie aceptaba la situación con notable tranquilidad.Cuando Émilie murió en 1749, Voltaire quedó profundamente afectado.
La consideraba una de las pocas personas capaces de igualarlo intelectualmente.Otro aspecto polémico de su vida fue su estrechísima relación con su sobrina Marie-Louise Mignot, conocida como Madame Denis.
Durante décadas vivieron juntos y muchos contemporáneos sospecharon que mantenían una relación sentimental.
La naturaleza exacta de ese vínculo sigue siendo objeto de debate histórico, aunque no cabe duda de que fue una de las personas más importantes de su vida y terminó heredando buena parte de su fortuna.Su fama llegó incluso a las cortes reales.
Mantuvo una larga amistad con el rey Federico II el Grande, quien lo invitó a vivir en Prusia.
Durante un tiempo parecían inseparables: un rey ilustrado y el filósofo más famoso de Europa.
Sin embargo, ambos poseían egos enormes.
Las disputas personales, los problemas financieros y los constantes choques de carácter acabaron destruyendo la relación.A pesar de su imagen de hombre racional, Voltaire era extraordinariamente hipocondríaco.
Pasó media vida convencido de que estaba a punto de morir.
Sufría problemas digestivos, dificultades urinarias, migrañas y numerosos dolores crónicos.
Paradójicamente, sobrevivió a casi todos sus médicos.También desarrolló una legendaria adicción al café.
Algunos contemporáneos aseguraban que podía beber entre cuarenta y cincuenta tazas diarias, muchas veces mezcladas con chocolate.
Cuando le advirtieron que aquella costumbre acabaría matándolo, respondió con su habitual sarcasmo que debía de ser un veneno muy lento.Su miedo a ser arrestado tampoco desapareció jamás.
Por ello compró la finca de Ferney, junto a la frontera suiza.
Allí podía escapar rápidamente de una jurisdicción a otra si las autoridades francesas o suizas decidían perseguirlo.En Ferney vivió sus últimos años convertido en una especie de leyenda viviente.
Recibía visitantes de toda Europa, respondía miles de cartas y seguía interviniendo en debates políticos y religiosos.
Se calcula que escribió más de veinte mil cartas a lo largo de su vida, una correspondencia gigantesca que hoy constituye una fuente histórica de enorme valor.En 1778 regresó triunfalmente a París después de décadas de ausencia.
La ciudad lo recibió como a una celebridad.
Multitudes acudían a verlo y los teatros lo homenajeaban.
Era el reconocimiento que había perseguido toda su vida.Murió el 30 de mayo de ese mismo año, con 83 años.
Existe una famosa anécdota según la cual, cuando un sacerdote le pidió que renunciara a Satanás en su lecho de muerte, respondió: "No es momento de hacer nuevos enemigos".
La frase es perfecta para Voltaire, aunque los historiadores no están seguros de que realmente la pronunciara.Lo que sí ocurrió es que la Iglesia veía con malos ojos al gran crítico del fanatismo religioso.
Para evitar problemas con el entierro, sus amigos trasladaron discretamente el cadáver fuera de París y consiguieron enterrarlo en una abadía.La historia aún le reservaba un último triunfo.
Cuando estalló la Revolución Francesa, los revolucionarios lo consideraron uno de sus grandes inspiradores intelectuales.
En 1791 sus restos fueron trasladados con enormes honores al Panteón de París.
Miles de personas acompañaron el cortejo.Dos siglos y medio después de su muerte, Voltaire sigue siendo una figura fascinante.
Defensor de la libertad de expresión, enemigo de la intolerancia, escritor brillante, especulador financiero, amante incansable, polemista profesional y hombre lleno de contradicciones.

📜 In dem Schreiben vom 24. Februar 1754 an Carl Eugen bittet Voltaire selbstbewusst darum, bei der Auszahlung seiner Leibrente zukünftig auf die Vorlage von amtlichen certificats de vie (Lebensbescheinigungen) verzichten zu können.
