Discussions between Greece and the British Museum about the fate of the Parthenon Marbles (also known as the Elgin Marbles) are moving forward. The U.K. government has said that they would not obstruct a loan agreement, but a British law enacted in 1963 prohibits the museum from permanently transferring any part of its collection. The sculptures date back to around 440 BCE and were removed from the Parthenon in Athens in the early 19th century by Lord Elgin. While the British Museum says their acquisition was legal, Greece contends that it was unauthorized and that they should be housed in the Acropolis Museum, where there is an empty space kept for them as part of a display.
