I recently read "Babel: An Arcane History" by R. F. Kuang.
Overall, I loved the #novel. However, I was puzzled by it as well. The story is predicated on the #nuances of #language, and yet the the author describes conversations and thoughts of characters that are jarring, because the vocabulary just doesn't map to early #19thcentury #English
Some examples:

"Performatively righteous" -
