I feel like an #OldFogey saying this, but back in my #CircuitCity days, if someone returned an item, we tested it to make sure it wasn't defective, then packaged it back up to the best of our abilities, and put it back on the shelf with an #OpenBox discount sticker, usually 20-50% off retail price. We never sent anything to the #landfill unless it was legitimately broken beyond repair.

Oh, this must be one of the *early* generations, when the illumination came from a teeny-tiny #incandescent bulb 💡 instead of an #LED.IIRC, they worked OK(ish) when the battery was still pretty fresh, but as the battery voltage diminished with normal use, the luminosity dropped off precipitously.🔋
But when those LED-illuminated models finally came along... Wowzers! 🤩 If you were looking straight at the watch face when you pressed the illumination button in the middle of the night, you'd temporarily blind yourself. 😵💫 Instead, you had to press the button while looking away, then gradually bring the watch into your field of view, so your eyes would have time to adjust. 🫣
Those were the #GoodOldDays, eh?

@iowacodecamp
Just a heads-up, your website (https://iowacodecamp.com) says, "Call for speakers is open. Submit your talks here," but when I click the link (https://iowacodecamp.wufoo.com/forms/iowa-code-camp-spring-2023-speaker-submission), it says, "Sorry, but this form is no longer accepting submissions."Additionally, the #IowaCodeCamp 2023 event details page on #CommunityDays (https://communitydays.org/event/2023-06-17/iowa-code-camp-2023) says that speaker submissions are open through June 9th, but the submission link there is the same as the one on your website.
However, the submission link in your pinned post here on Mastodon (https://bit.ly/ICCSpring2023Speakers) still works.
Can you clarify if there has been a glitch, or if submissions are actually closed? Thanks!

@sqlchick That was very helpful feedback, thank you! 😊 I'm just a tiny little fish in this big ol' #PowerBI pond, and I've been sharing your content with my friends and colleagues ever since I started working with the #DataPlatform, so I'm incredibly flattered that you found some of my content worth sharing as well. Thanks again so much for helping me spread awareness and enthusiasm for the #DataDojo #CommunityOfPractice concept. 🤗

Hey #PowerBI people, I just posted Part 2 of my #DataDojo #CommunityOfPractice blog series. Check it out here:

I've been really enjoying #MSBuild so far, but the #chatroom next to the #streaming video is extremely distracting, so I wrote a #UserStyle #css that hides the #chat and resizes the video to take advantage of the extra space. Just install the #Stylus browser extension (https://add0n.com/stylus.html), then click the Install button on the linked page below, and enjoy a cleaner, less distracting #MicrosoftBuild experience. 😎

That was probably meant as a joke, but a good #SoundDesigner can make an entire track from nothing but one short #VocalSample, and you'd never know it.The human voice has lots of great #textures and #harmonics that easily lend themselves to #SoundDesign techniques like #GranularSynthesis and #resampling. Add in a healthy dose of the usual effects (like #reverb, #delay, #chorus, #distortion, #repitch, etc.), and the possibilities are nearly limitless.
Sorry for the info dump; Sound design is one of my lifelong passions, and I can't help chiming in when someone brings up audio #sampling. I hope you at least found it somewhat interesting. 😅

This is fascinating!I've been studying #Czech, which shares a ton of #phonemes and #vocabulary with other #Slavic languages, but is written with a Latin-based character set (I say "Latin-based" because Czech uses an assortment of #diacritic marks as #pronunciation modifiers on an otherwise standard #Latin character set).
On several occasions, I've come across a #Russian or #Ukrainian word written in its native #Cyrillic script followed by a #phonetic pronunciation guide written in Latin characters, and consequently recognized the word as one that is shared with Czech. Those moments of recognition are just pure #linguistic glee.

I'm not pretending that #CuttingTheCable doesn't involve some sacrifice. There's always some amount of loss involved when switching from one thing to another. There's no such thing as a 100% seamless transition.However, there are plenty of 100% free sources of quality entertainment out there (#PublicLibraries, anyone?), so the main sacrifice that #CableCutters must make is simply the time it takes them to find and settle into a new entertainment groove.
But since they're already wasting plenty of their precious time #WatchingTV in the first place, I think if they have to spend a few hours finding new sources of entertainment in order to avoid putting money directly into #fascists' pockets, that ought to be an acceptable tradeoff for any reasonable person.
