Bugger that, I'll leave it up. There's no point denying I'm a cantankerous git. Mind you, an enormous chicken pie I've just enjoyed, the ladoo I'm about to scoff, and the prospect of going out on my teeny motorcycle tonight, now that the weather isn't quite so diabolical, is buoying my spirits. Back at the yard trials again, we have an Australian Kelpie called Boof.
It was a hot, dry day and the sheep were being particularly cantankerous, but Boof took it all in his stride. With confidence, and a relaxed style, he was able to read the sheep and preempt every move. Slowly and calmly he guided the sheep with far more considered and methodical movements than some of the younger dogs were able to muster.
I feel this photo captures some of that easy-going and confident nature; no fear, no aggression, just getting the job done.

I finished the banner design, version one at least. It encapsulates how I feel my imagination looks. A little rusty, a little cantankerous, but time tested and reliable in the end. Steam mechanics just seem right.

Another #OldManDog now, Alex! He just turned 12 1/2, and was our first #BorderCollie when he was 8wk old. Now he's a cantankerous old man with bad knees because he's too stubborn to listen to anyone anymore. Most of the time now he hangs out with me while I WFH, as he mostly creaks his way from bed to bed. That said, he still seems pretty happy as long as we keep the young puppies out of his face.

In memory of #BernardCribbins yesterday, I watched the episode of #FawltyTowers called #TheHotelInspectors in which Cribbins’ character was the main antagonist for #JohnCleese as #BasilFawlty. Cribbins usually played very mild and likeable characters but here he portrayed a troublesome and cantankerous person and did so very well, with hilarious results.

I'm about a year away from having a complete set: I still need to make the parts for the bellows, and then design sewing patterns for the bag and the bellows.
Hope is on the way, in other words. Stick with the whistle as you building your repertoire: the pipes are cantankerous, and learning tunes at the same time you learn the pipes is just going to max out the difficulty.

Can & Can'tankerous is the fifty-ninth book in the #harlan_ellison directory. It collects stories from later in Ellison's career, from the 2000s through the mid-2010s. It's interesting to see Ellison mention Kanye West and Uber.
A standout story is Incognita, Inc., which might be the ultimate "magic-shoppe" story. It is a must-read for fantasy/magical realism writers.

A LOT of the actual people featured in the story pop up as cameos. Howard Devoto was the lead singer of the bands Buzzcocks and Magazine. Actual Tony Wilson, members of Happy Mondays (Paul Ryder. & Rowetta), Ian Curtis’s grandmother and cantankerous legend Mark E. Smith from The Fall are among those cameos.

"Dancers," Edgar Degas, 1884-5
Degas (1834-1917) is one of the most iconic Impressionist artists for his depictions of ballet dancers. They're almost a cliche these days, they're so overexposed.
Although viewed as an Impressionist, he disdained the term himself, claiming to be a Realist. Almost half his work, which included prints, drawings, and sculptures, depicted dancers; he never did any plein air painting as the other Impressionists did.
He never married, believing an artist should live alone, but he appeared to have romances with painters Suzanne Valadon and, most notably, Mary Cassatt, who seemed to tolerate him as he grew more cantankerously antisemitic and misogynist in his later years.
I can enjoy the quality of the work, though, but with some regret that it's almost too well-known and widely reproduced, to the point of becoming a bit banal.

Mad Mabel by Sally Hepworth
I had expected a light, humorous read but Mad Mabel was not. It is a darker story about friendships, family, and how rumors can change a life forever. The story is set in Australia. It has a dual timeline. One tells us about Mabel’s past while the rest is as a senior citizen.
Mabel’s father never loved her. He blamed her for the first death when she was only three years old. Mabel’s mother drank too much and waited too long to reach out to Mabel.
The story is told by an 81-year-old Mabel who now goes by the name of Elsie Fitzpatrick. We learn that the only bright spot in her life was her best friend, Daphne. Life would have been unbearable without Daphne.
When Mabel’s neighbor is missing for a couple days, a young girl brings it to Mabel’s attention. Mabel climbs over a fence to check on her neighbor. She is too late and the police blame “Mad Mabel” for his death.
Her life is revealed through flashbacks that explain why she is seen as a killer. She knows that she is innocent and believes that the truth will be revealed but finds it difficult to allow anyone to help her.
Life was difficult for Mabel and her struggle was real. Mabel may not have been guilty, but she still carried plenty of guilt. Daphne was the only one who stood beside her.
I enjoyed this story more than I thought I would. The mystery was what happened to the people around Mabel and was she responsible?
Mabel was a difficult person to love. She was cantankerous. She pushed people away. Life for her was better alone.
I grew to love Mabel and her little community of friends who had to force Mabel to let them help her.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes mysteries that involve senior citizens with characters who are a little odd.
I read The Good Sister before and enjoyed that one. Hepworth has a knack for creating characters that are a little different. She is great with family dynamics.
