"The Singer in Green," Edgar Degas, c. 1884.
Degas (1834-1917) is normally grouped with the Impressionists, although he didn't identify as one and regarded himself as a Realist. One thinks he's blowing smoke here; his style is definitely Impressionist, even if he didn't paint outside as they did. His subject matter was mostly dancers and entertainers.
He did start off as a meticulous naturalist, depicting his subjects and forms very realistically, but as he aged and his career evolved, he merged more into an Impressionist mode. In the 1880s, when this was painted, he was growing more abstract in his forms and was experimenting with vibrant and saturated colors, like the turquoise elements of the model's costume.
In his time, his work attracted both admiration and contempt, and his later embrace of antisemitic views (and other right-wing views) hurt his reputation. His longtime friend Mary Cassatt clashed with him over this, and was amused when a collector exhibited their work together in support of women's suffrage.

“The Ballet Class” by Edgar Degas (painted around 1874.) What an amazing artist Degas was… -
Przedwczoraj w historii sztuki w komiksie pojawił się absyntowy Degas. To dziś łapcie coś na drugą nogę.
Po lewej: Edgar Degas, "W kawiarni" aka "Absynt" ("Dans un café" aka "L’Absinthe"), 1876.
Po prawej: "Cirque Aléatoire", t. 1: "Private Jauques", scen. Sylvain Ricard, rys. i tusz Christophe Gaultier.

Nadszedł czas, by w historii sztuki w komiksie po raz drugi pojawiła się seria "Grandville". A skoro pojawia się po raz drugi, to tym razem coś z drugiego tomu.
Edgar Degas, "W kawiarni" aka "Absynt" ("Dans un café" aka "L’Absinthe"), 1876.
"Grandville", t. 2: "Mon amour", 2010, scen., rys. i tusz Bryan Talbot.

"Dancers," Edgar Degas, 1884-5
Degas (1834-1917) is one of the most iconic Impressionist artists for his depictions of ballet dancers. They're almost a cliche these days, they're so overexposed.
Although viewed as an Impressionist, he disdained the term himself, claiming to be a Realist. Almost half his work, which included prints, drawings, and sculptures, depicted dancers; he never did any plein air painting as the other Impressionists did.
He never married, believing an artist should live alone, but he appeared to have romances with painters Suzanne Valadon and, most notably, Mary Cassatt, who seemed to tolerate him as he grew more cantankerously antisemitic and misogynist in his later years.
I can enjoy the quality of the work, though, but with some regret that it's almost too well-known and widely reproduced, to the point of becoming a bit banal.
From the Musée d'Orsay, Paris.

From up and down and still somehow
It's cloud illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all"

No two persons ever heard the same #music, read the same #book, or saw and pictured the same #clouds. Here i am realizing how interesting it is how art can open one's senses in such a personal manner.
