  1. Galloping Goose Water Tank
    Trout Lake, Colorado

Located on the Rio Grande Southern Railroad route from Dolores to Telluride, this water tank served the steam locomotives that originally ran on this narrow gauge railroad.

The expensive to run locomotives were replaced by lightweight "motors" built from automotive bodies for mail runs. These motors were nicknamed Galloping Geese.

  2. anTenna Tuesday
    Sandia Crest east of Albuquerque
    [vertical photo]

The highest portion of the Sandia Mountains bordering the city is not a peak, but a ridge line that is known locally as The Crest. Near the northern end is a forest of TV, FM radio, and microwave antennas.

Our original TV stations, back in the 1950s, were able to provide strong signals to the Albuquerque and surrounding areas negating the need for CATV for many years. On a clear day you can see them from anywhere in the city.

  3. CW: Coffee

@erikavaris The lesson: Never, never run out of one's preferred bean.

I keep my soon to be consumed beans in one of those glass containers with a rubber gasket. When I decant the last of the purchased product into the jar I still have plenty of time to get to the supplier as it holds about a week's worth.

  5. The 24" Clark Telescope
    Lowell Observatory, Flagstaff, AZ

Of the many telescopes found on Lowell Observatory’s central Flagstaff campus, the most prolific and recognizable is the Clark Refractor.... In the observatory’s earliest days, Percival Lowell himself used the Clark to study the surface of Mars, searching for signs of intelligent life. His theories on the subject fostered massive public interest in astronomy and sparked the imaginations of science fiction writers for generations to come. Nearly a century later, the Clark would be used by a team of scientists and artists to create painstakingly detailed maps of the Moon’s surface for use on the Apollo moon mission.

  9. @smellsofbikes Yes, and I couldn't even leave my dead-end street in an NEV by law. I'd need an EV that could go at least 45 and preferably 55mph. Don't need faster. 80mi range or at least 60mi. 2 people max would work for me, but maybe not most. #OffTheCuff
