'The Punisher: One Last KillΞ was solid. Nothing extremely significant or groundbreaking happened, but it introduces a certain Punisher antagonist (borrowing a few elements from the 2000 'Welcome Back Frank' comic arc) and sets up a new direction for the character, while also offering some bloody, brutal action.
It's around 50 minutes of Frank Castle facing his inner demons and having a very 'John Wick: Excommunicado' afternoon, while earning the special's 18+ rating by going full Punisher on some noticeably neo-Nazi coded bad guys who terrorise a small community of people of colour. Overall, not a bad way to spend your evening. If nothing else, itβs just another reminder of how perfect Jon Bernthal is in this role, as his performance and the complexity he brings to the character carries the entire plot.

RIP Tony Stella. Very few artists today capture the old-school film aesthetic the way he did. His style was a raw, hand-painted love letter to golden age cinema, and his ability to capture the mood, heart, and tension of each film in a single illustration was on the level of Noriyoshi Ohrai, Drew Struzan, and Renato Casaro.

Happy 27th anniversary to one of the most prominent entries of my 'Comfort Cheese' watchlist. Released on May 7, 1999, and starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz.

Happy 30th anniversary to 'The Craft', released on May 3, 1996. One of the most 90s films to gain a cult status. Truly the peak of the Fairuza Balk goth horror era.

'Clayface' has the potential to be a properly unsettling body horror film that takes the 'Feat of Clay' episodes of Batman TAS to new levels, and it looks like this is the way it's heading, and I hope it sticks the landing, both because itβs a bold and compelling change for comic book adaptations, and because it fits the character's narrative well.
(CW for the teaser: close shots of bloody eye/face injury, surgical needles/scalpels, and graphic melting of flesh/loss of facial features.)

RIP Sam Kieth; he left his mark on an entire era of comic book history. 'The Maxx' was brilliant, complex and deep, and ahead of its time on so many levels. His work is so distinct and has inspired so many creators that came after him. Such a talent.

Today marks 60 years since Adam West's 'Batman' made its premiere on ABC in 1966. The third live-action adaptation of the character, after Lewis Wilson and Robert Lowery, and most definitely the campiest and cheesiest. Say what you like about the gloomy and more "realistic" depictions that came later, but there's a certain innocent charm in the utter ridiculousness that defined this show that cannot be compared.

Not sure how many people remember or have watched 'Continuum', but apparently it's already been 13 years since it premiered in Canada on the Showcase channel on May 27, 2012. The show was about time travel, and had its protagonist find herself in present time, chasing a group of escaped criminals who were trying to change the future where governments have collapsed and corporations have taken over and formed an oligarchy run by CEOs in the form of the Global Corporate Congress.
Initially she is trying to stop them, but as the story unfolds and she realises that the system she is trying to protect is not just flawed but a dystopian corporate dictatorship, things get complicated. And boy that was definitely a premise. It was a solid Sci-Fi series that didn't get much love, but it did last for 4 season and got a proper ending that wraps the story up and offers an all in all satisfying conclusion.

Today marks 20 years since 'Rose', the first episode of the 2005 'Doctor Who' revival aired, featuring Christopher Eccleston as the leather-jacket-wearing, witty and dorky 9th Doctor and Billie Piper as Rose Tyler, ending a 16 year hiatus.
Hard to believe that it's already been 2 decades. Ever since I stumbled upon reruns of Tom Bakerβs Doctor, I've had a special place in my heart for this show. I'd say despite its weirdness, but it's more likely because of it. It had a limited budget, plenty of campiness, extra cheese, and lots of heart (two hearts, to be precise), and it made this combo work.
It's not for everyone, and that's OK, and it had its hits and misses since it first aired back in 1963, but at a time where so much of the current entertainment confuses cynicism and bleakness with realism, and edgy and misanthropic is presented as cool, I'm glad that shows that remain unapologetically silly, and hopeful, and sometimes sentimental, and at the same time always relevant and political still have their place. So I'm happy this peculiar little show is still around doing its thing. π π

Today marks 25 years since the release of Vagrant Story, an underrated PS1 action RPG, that stood out for its art style, atmosphere, storytelling, and unique mechanics. Arguably a title that played its own part in paving the way for the "Souls-like" genre.
The game never got a proper remaster, but it is currently available to vote for in GOG's Dreamlist, with the possibility to be revived and preserved as part of their library:

Lots of little nods to "Pryde of the X-Men" in "Tolerance Is Extinction Part 2". Which isn't surprising, given how Beau DeMayo shared the 1989 pilot a day before the episode came out. The combination of Storm's opening animation and the inclusion of her original Dave Cockrum costume in a way brings her full circle.
