In recent centuries, industrial CO2 has drowned out Milankovich cycles, but Milankovich cycles were a major factor in climate change during the Pleistocene and Pliocene (and presumably before). An interesting factoid I heard DECADES ago:A thousand years ago, #China invented paper, gunpowder, new forms of mathematics and led the world in science. Marco Polo brought back "noodles" to give Italy "spaghetti".
Then they built a wall. Their society became closed and plunged into totalitarianism. Science & Innovation vanished and they stayed that way until they reopened trade with the West.

The #hydraulic scour explanation is interesting, possibly interacting with preexisting glacial features like a kettle. The strand here is, I think, natural, so it’s not induced by a constructed #levee in this case. Thanks for the interesting reply. -

I believe quite a few countries had their warmest #NewYearsEve on record too, including e.g. the Netherlands.

@BrianPierce @DrEvanGowan I’m aware of #glacial #kettle #ponds on #CapeCod, but not in #tidal #wetland settings like this. I am wondering whether a kettle could persist for ~ 12 ka as meters of #sediment and #peat accumulate in the #marsh as #sealevelrise floods the #estuary during the #Holocene. @Anthro’s suggestion of #hydraulic scouring, or something similar, may be the explanation.
