  1. This fantastic interactive art piece from @bluerehn and Nellie Pease is on display at the South Australian Museum, or you can check it out online at chronovarium.com/.

Chronovarium encourages you to change boundary conditions, see how the landscape changes, and then 'collect' your core.

Here's mine - you can see the process from grassland to wooded area, to rainforest, to swamp, to jarrah forest, and the decisions I made along the way!

Brilliant work Emma, and thanks for making it available online 💚

Not quite as catastrophic as the MWP1a but still large. I wonder if this has been updated recently at all?

    fediscience.org/@Ruth_Mottram/
Ruth_Mottram - This plot on wikipedia was made by @RARohde based on data published in late 90s and early 00s. Wondering if this has been updated or if there is new understanding on any of these palaeo records?

  24. The first paper for our paper club is this recent one from McKay et al., presenting a thorough investigation of the (supposed?) 4.2 ka event. I'd read it when it was published, but just went through again in more detail, and what a good paper. Robust stats (of course, from this group), and they do a really nice job of building the case. I hope the group enjoys it!

  25. A full on but successful 4 days on the XFM beamline at the Ausgralian Synchrotron. We mixed things up this time by running some tree cores for Casey's PhD work - lots of cool features showing up! We also mapped a bunch of stalagmites, including some pilot data for my next job. 74 elemental maps made, a new record for us!

  26. Nice new paper from Danielle Udy reconstructing the fire weather index for Eastern Australia using the Law Dome ice core. Recent changes in FFDI are unprecented in the palaeo record...

  27. Box of rocks arrived for me today 😍 we will be taking these beauties to the Aus Synchrotron next month to get an idea if they might be suitable for #palaeofire research. Happily, these were collected by a friend of mine for her PhD, which means a potential collaboration with a friend (yay!), and the reuse of old samples rather than collecting new (double yay!).

  28. "Here we combine genetic evidence and palaeoecological models to infer the geographic location that acted as the Hub for our species during the early phases of colonisation of Eurasia."

Vallini, L., Zampieri, C., Shoaee, M.J. et al. The Persian plateau served as hub for Homo sapiens after the main out of Africa dispersal. 29. I've said this a few times now, but, pending disaster, today is my last day of labwork for this postdoc! I've got 4 mm of sample to mill (40 samples!). This speleothem grew during the early Holocene before stopping, and starting again in the 1930s. I'm very excited to see the stable isotope data approaching this hiatus!

The listening entertainment for the day is the Hobbit, as read by Andy Serkis. Libraries are the best 💚

  31. There's something soothing about polishing rocks. Gave some samples a touch-up ahead of a trip to the Synchrotron next week for some fun on the XFM line. Look at the shine! #palaeoClimate #Speleothems #Stalagmites #AustralianSynchrotron #Shiny

  32. Good couple of #blogposts by @kenrice on a recent paper by #JamesHansen et al I'd missed about #ClimateSensitivity.
I tend to agree about the #IceSheet point, it's hard to extrapolate #ECS from #palaeoclimate on #milankovitch timescales because the whole world was *very* different place
