From ancient times right through to the Edo period the dayflower was used to produce a vivid blue dye, and from the 18th-early 19thC artists used the blue pigment in ukiyo-e woodcuts.
But like the flower, the dye has a short life (especially if made wet) and fades quickly. -
In different types of soil hydrangea petals differ in colour, giving rise to the nickname 'shichihenge' (七変化 '7 transformations').
Throughout history the warrior class shunned the flowers, considering hydrangea to symbolise fickleness and a change of heart or loyalties. -
In times of old courtiers and courtesans would flock to the banks of the Tamagawa (玉川) in Ide (井手), south of Kyōto, to view the yamabuki.
It was an expensive excursion, giving birth to the phrase "scattering gold coins as the yamabuki scatters golden petals". -
In the language of flowers, 'hanakotoba' (花言葉), wisteria also represent kindness, gentleness and amiability (優しさ), a welcoming nature (歓迎), intoxicating love (恋に酔う), and somewhat more ominously never *ever* being parted (決して離れない).

Since Edo times people have anticipated the mating song of the uguisu, 🎵"ho-hokekyō"🎶 (法-法華経), as it indicates that spring has arrived.
'Ume-ni-uguisu' (梅にうぐいす 'bush warbler and plum blossoms') is a common motif in Japanese art and has the meaning 'match made in heaven'.

There was a general belief that eating hard foods would help harden and strengthen the teeth, which would in turn help strengthen the body as a whole.
Deep connections were made between teeth, aging, life and -by extension- the New Year (when everyone's age increased by 1 year).

A few more tanuki putting their scrotums to good use.
-
But why the large scrotum?
Well, it's thought that the idea emerged in Kamakura times. Goldsmiths would use the stretchy skin of Tanuki testicles when hammering gold nuggets into gold leaf.
'Kintama' (金玉 'golden balls') is used as slang for testicles even today.

Originally a Chinese term, the name 'Plum Rain' applied to the 4th and 5th lunar months, and the belief that the rainy conditions were created by the plum trees south of the Yangtze.
When the plums turned yellow and dropped, it is thought the moisture created turned to rain.
