Pagoda in the maples at Kiyomizu-dera.
The air was a bit hazy and backlit, but I like how that turned out in this shot.

Maples and [unknown tree] at Kiyomizu-dera :momiji:
Finally got around to going through some of the photos I took on my camera (vs. phone) during our trip to Kyoto.
I was initially not very happy with most of what I got that day. But after re-learning some basic darktable workflow again to clean things up, I ended up with at least a few that I liked.
If you know what the twisty foreground tree is, let me know.

First full day in Kyoto, main attraction was Kiyomizu-dera.
Walked a lot, very tired. It was nice though!

📷 Otro caso de postal típica en el que, pese a todo, quería hacer mi propia foto. ¿Lo más dificil? Llegar, situarse y esperar tres horas a que anocheciera...

In the Heian period water was collected for the steam baths below Kiyomizu-dera, where the aristocracy purified themselves before praying at the temple.
In Edo times local noodle makers and watermelon farmers used the waters in order to sell their products as 'sickness prevention'.
-
Otowa-no-taki is also known as the 'spring for the purification of the six roots of perception' (六根清浄の清水), a place where the faithful could cleanse their senses and ready their spirit for prayer.
The six roots of perception: eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind.
-
Some of you may find the name 'Otowa-no-taki' (音羽の滝) familiar, and that is because Kiyomizu-dera's waterfall is also called the 'Sound of Feathers Falls'.
That sacred waterfall is the source of the temple's name...
Kiyomizu '清水'🤔='pure waters'😌 -
3) 堂々巡り📿
"Circling the temple hall" is similar to the English phrase "Going around in circles". It is yet another idiom born at Kiyomizu-dera.
Pilgrims would circle the main hall, often many hundreds of times, as an act of faith. -
Astonishingly, the temple recorded 234 attempts!
Although the stage is 13m high, the survival rate amongst jumpers was a good 85% (landings cushioned by bushes and the gradient of the hillside).
In the Genroku era (元禄 1688-1704) alone 20 jumps were recorded.
Jumping is now prohibited😉 -
1) 清水の舞台から飛び降りる🪂
Let's start with the most famous.
"To jump off the stage at Kiyomizu-dera" is similar to the English expression "Taking the plunge"...committing oneself despite a risk of failure. In Edo times it was believed that if you survived the jump a long-held wish would be granted.
-
On the east side of Kiyomizu-dera's main hall, on a beam below the latticed shutters, is a long, deep scratch (堂々巡り筋痕).
It was created by the countless rosary beads rubbed against the wood so that worshippers could feel their way around the hall when darkness fell.

👆THE PILGRIMS' SCRATCH⚡️
Kiyomizu-dera (清水寺) has given birth to 2 famous idioms.
The second is...
"Circling the temple hall" , similar to the English phrase "going around in circles".
堂々巡り📿Pilgrims would circle the main hall, often many hundreds of times, as an act of faith.

🌻FLOWER TEAHOUSE🍵
Flower Teahouse sits on Ninenzaka (二年坂), part of a hill that climbs from Kōdai-ji (高台寺) to Kiyomizu-dera (清水寺), one of Kyōto's most popular temples.
The landscape is carefully preserved, filled with Taishō period buildings.

The path is broken into three parts, renamed each time the gradient of the climb increases.
Beginning at Kōdai-ji is the almost flat 'Ichinenzaka' (一年坂 '1 Year Slope'), leading on to 'Ninenzaka' (二年坂 '2 Year Slope'), and finally the steep 'Sannenzaka' (三年坂 '3 Year Slope').
Waiting at the top of the slopes is Kiyomizu-dera.

Kannon would reward these acts of faith by granting one wish📿
But what if you did not survive the fall?
Well, it was not all bad news.
Your soul would be carried directly to "Kannon's Pure Land", Mount Potalaka (補陀洛 'Fudaraku-san'), in the seas south of India😇 -
'Young Woman Jumping from the Kiyomizu Temple Stage with an Umbrella as a Parachute' (清水の舞台より飛ぶ美人) by Suzuki Harunobu (鈴木春信 1724-1770), Utagawa Yoshiume (歌川芳梅 1819-1879) and Toyohara Chikanobu (豊原周延 1838–1912).

For Hanatōro around 2400 lanterns would stretch from Shōren-in (青蓮院) to Kiyomizu-dera (清水寺), via Maruyama Park (円山公園-where there are displays of ikebana 生け花), Kōdai-ji (高台寺), Ninnenzaka (二年坂) and Sannenzaka (三年坂).

This time Ms. Ishikawa suggested the excursion, to check out the new Kyōto annex of her Ōsaka employer, the department store chain Takashimaya. There was even a store in the annex of theme items by Nintendō (任天堂), one of the few big companies based in Kyōto (last photo!).
It is ironic in terms of official Japan's reputation that Japanese women must take their husband's surname, except if they marry a foreigner. Then they do not have to, and my wife kept her maiden name. It is not well known, so sometimes the mailmen have wondered if we are related or what.
Although I thoroughly enjoy the tawny brownish red autumn leaves, leave it to World Heritage temple Kiyomizudera (清水寺) to display the full splendor of red maple leaves.

A rather frightening curse hangs over the 'three' slopes. If you fall on 'Sannenzaka' you will be dead within 3 years, do so on 'Ninenzaka' and you have 2 years only, tumble on 'Ichinenzaka' and you really don't have much time left.
Be careful how you go⏱️😱👣
