Corridors, not culls, offer solution to Southern #Africa’s growing #elephant population

- Elephant populations in Southern Africa are stable or growing, but the space available for them is not.
- Often, elephant populations are constrained, increasing their impact on the environment or surrounding communities, and triggering calls for controversial solutions, like culls or contraception.
- But studies in a region that hosts 50% of Africa’s remaining savanna elephants (Loxodonta africana) show how the animals make use of wildlife corridors to move between protected areas and neighboring countries.

Nigerian Explorer Discovers Lake in Leicester, UK and Challenges Colonial Narratives
In a bold move to challenge colonial narratives that have long claimed the discovery of African landmarks, a Nigerian man living in the United Kingdom has discovered a new lake in Leicester, East Midlands, and named it Iyi Ojemba.
Mazi Uba Acho, a native of Igbo Naton in West Africa, posted on #Facebook about his discovery, highlighting the absurdity of the colonialist mindset that sought to claim discovery of places already known to local communities. He cited examples of Mungo Park's claim to discovering the River #Niger in #Nigeria and David Livingstone's claim to discovering the #Zambezi River and Victoria Falls in #Zambia and #Zimbabwe.
By discovering and naming the new lake in Leicester, Mazi Uba Acho is taking a stand against the erasure of African knowledge and history. He urges others to put it on record, teach it to their children, and take pride in their heritage.
This act of reverse colonialism serves as a powerful reminder that knowledge and discovery are not exclusive to any one race or culture, and that we must celebrate and value the contributions of all communities. Southern #Africa is one of the most important places in the world for understanding the #Permian, the period that ended with the largest #MassExtinction in #Earth's history. The valleys of the #Luangwa and #Zambezi in #Zambia 🇿🇲 are particularly rich in Permian fossils, including this #gorgonopsian on display at the #UniversityOfWashington's #BurkeMuseum. These impressive animals are #therapsids, close relatives of mammals and perhaps the first #sabertooths.

Many of the oldest #fossils from the countries of the #Zambezi Basin come from #Namibia 🇳🇦, so we're returning there this week to meet the #Carboniferous #fish Namaichthys schroederi. It was an early member of a group with a bright future: the #Actinopterygii, or ray-finned #fishes, which, since Namaichthys swam the #Namibian seas 300 million years, has #evolved into by far the most diverse group of #vertebrates.

It’s from the legume ‘family’.
It’s native to #Africa, south of the #Zambezi River, where it occurs at middle altitudes.
This gorgeous thing’s is an ornamental tree (no surprise!) grown in warmer regions and is known for its nectar that drips from its flowers, which attracts a range of birds and insects.
This grows proudly in #Melbourne’s #botanicgardens.
