In #Carboniferous, global #forests appeared, covering #tropical zones with tree-high #horsetails, #clubmosses, and #ferns. #Oxygen levels rose, and #CO2 was bound for transforming peat into lignite and #bituminous #coal. The climate later became colder i.a. due to the decreasing greenhouse gas leading to the Permo-Carboniferous Ice Age period.

  10. My 25 years of palaeoart chronology...

...and the last post from 2022. Here's a study of Orthacanthus, for a project I cannot talk about yet. Orthacanthus, is a freshwater elasmobranch (shark) from the Carboniferous and Permian Periods.

Some zooms into my "Primeval Clevedon Bay" painting (2022), depicting fish, crinoids, othrocones, corals, gastropods, and brachiopods in an Early Carboniferous shallow sea. This painting was the first winner of the Marsh Palaeoart Award.

  13. My 25 years of palaeoart chronology...

Here's a second painting of the Severn Estuary, this time during the Early Carboniferous. Called "Primeval Clevedon Bay," it features fish, crinoids, othrocones, corals, gastropods, and brachiopods. This painting was the first winner of the Marsh Palaeoart Award.

Last post for my life-size Megeneura (70cm wingspan, 2017); packaging and shipping a delicate model to the Senckenberg Museum, Frankfurt, was nooooot easy.

  17. My 25 years of palaeoart chronology...

I've built multiple life-size Megeneura models over the years, this one, for the Senckenberg Museum, Frankfurt, was the first at the full 70cm wingspan (2017).

Head anatomy and #phylogenomics show the #Carboniferous giant #Arthropleura belonged to a millipede-centipede group science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv

"The giant bug's topper was a round bulb with two short bell-shaped antennae, two protruding eyes like a crab, and a rather small mouth adapted for grinding leaves and bark"

  19. My 25 years of palaeoart chronology...

In 2013 I built 23 scale and life-size models for MUSE Science Museum, in Trento, Italy. Here's a modestly sized Meganeura, from the Carboniferous.

#carbonifero #Carboniferous #permico #permian

  21. On a moonlit night in the early Carboniferous, two Pulmonoscorpius do a mating dance in the Lepidodendron swamp. Although the giant scorpions have little interest in prey right now, a Balanerpeton amphibian wisely decides to swim away, while several Casineria sleep through the night in the copious tree litter.

An oversized, late-surviving reticulosan sponge from the #Carboniferous of Ireland sciencedirect.com/science/arti

"This is an exceptionally large example of a type of #fossil sponge that was previously only known from much older rocks elsewhere in the world... The #sponge was originally composed of a rectangular meshwork of tiny spicules made of silica, held together by a thin organic membrane"

  23. I wish I knew what kinds of #weather changes (if any?) happened when #flying #insects became widespread in the #Carboniferous (or before?), again when flying #pterosaurs became widespread in the #Triassic, a third time when flying #birds became widespread (late #Jurassic or early #Cretaceous), and fourth time when flying #bats became widespread in the #Paleocene.

#Melanedaphodon’s teeth, which end in bulbous points, are unique. But they do possess some similarities to the chompers of #Edaphosaurus and living #lizards that eat plants as part of their diets.

Many of the oldest #fossils from the countries of the #Zambezi Basin come from #Namibia 🇳🇦, so we're returning there this week to meet the #Carboniferous #fish Namaichthys schroederi. It was an early member of a group with a bright future: the #Actinopterygii, or ray-finned #fishes, which, since Namaichthys swam the #Namibian seas 300 million years, has #evolved into by far the most diverse group of #vertebrates.

  34. Two #Mazothairos chase off a passing #Meganeura in a late Carboniferous swamp, startling a little #Archaeothyris. A #Sclerocephalus crawls ashore a little ways away, not realising there's a hidden #Arthropleura right there.

I've never really drawn paleoart set in the Carboniferous before, so I thought I'd start with the very basic 'giant bugs flying around in a swamp' trope.
