I gave Matter years of my live, sweat equity and precious real money. No more. This article tells it. I made the decision a couple days ago to dump my devices that require Matter. The battery issues, network fragmentation, latency, … it is all as the article says. Meanwhile, my Zigbee network has scaled nicely, batteries lasting up to 2 years, stable and responsive.

Added some #zwave LR devices (Zooz Titan water shutoff valve, and a few leak sensors). The "scan the QR Code with the #homeassistant app" workflow is just sooo easy.
No include/exclude business, no "tap the button 5 times" garbage. Scan, wait a minute, ta-da! New device in Home Assistant.

Going to start fresh with #HomeAutomation at the new place. Going to go back to #HomeAssistant but keeping my expectations low.
Here's the question:
#Zwave or #Zigbee ? I have a lot of Zwave hardware, but I'll need new stuff.I will have to communicate with and inside an all-metal barn (only about 20' away). Until I get ethernet in there, I'm going to have to be sneaky with anything wireless.

Un conseil en terme de matos ? du #MS48-LR - #LPS8v2 ? sur du Hat #RPI genre #SX1302 ? autre(s)?
L'idée serait de balancer une sonde dans une cuve pour télémétrie, avoir un second protocole pour la détection extérieur, station météo (coupler à HA + pilotage chauffage/eau chaude), etc :)Merci

Eine Frage an die #homeassistant und #zwave Spezis hier: ich bekomme folgende Fehlermeldung im HA, aber ein Firmwareupdate für den ZWA-2 wird mir im HA nicht angeboten. Wie bekomme ich aus dem #HAOS aus dem Raspi ein Firmwareupdate draufgeklöppelt? Oder muss ich den USB-Nöppel dafür doch an einen PC hängen?

Another aspect of #Matter which I don’t really like is there are no in-wall devices, like light switches, power sockets and other modules that would otherwise fit into the electrical box.
It’s all a massive afterthought with “smart” bulbs, that you have to always explain you cannot use wall switch now and you have to operate with glued on remote, eating up shitload of batteries…🥹
That’s not that smart, if you ask me…

I saw this at #CES2026 and thought it was cool. A battery-less Z-Wave sensor from WePower. I tried to understand how it works and all I walked away with was "magnets". Something to keep an eye on.

Am Sektionstor der Garage möchte ich mindestens einen Türkontakt anbringen, der Home Assistant meldet, ob das Tor geschlossen ist.
Test mit einem der Funkthermometer auf 433 MHz-Basis, die ich mit einem DVB-T-Empfänger für Home Assistant auslese: Das Thermometersignal kommt bei Platzierung in der Garage leider nicht mehr beim Empfänger dreieinhalb Etagen höher an. Anderen Sensoren wird es mit dieser Funktechnik dann wohl nicht anders ergehen.
Habe ich noch Alternativen zu LoRaWAN, bei denen ich ohne externe Unterstützung auskomme? Z-WAVE, Zigbee, WLAN usw. arbeiten alle mit höheren Frequenzen und ich bräuchte nach meinem Verständnis ja eher niedrigere, um besser durch Böden und Decken zu kommen …

The Costco #ZWave smoke detectors arrived today. I unboxed one and twisted it onto the mounting base, scanned the QR code, and it paired instantly with #HomeAssistant. Great success? These are on sale through the end of the month.
I should have bought some canned smoke! Regardless, I now have a bunch of smoke detectors to replace.

I'm running my VM in proxmox, but I assume that VirtualBox would be just as good.
I didn't mean to sound like I was criticizing your choice to run in docker - I did that for literally years before deciding that not using HAOS was adding more aggravation than it's worth. Some integrations just run better on HAOS or (at least for some 3rd party ones) aren't even tested on anything else.
That said, there are a lot of third party things you can run outside HAOS - I run Node Red, Frigate, zigbee2mqtt, zwaveJS and mosquitto in independent docker containers on other hosts and have HAOS connect to them.
It sounds like you have a lot of interesting hardware in your existing automation system that may or may not have integrations already.
One way to work around that would be to run an MQTT server like mosquitto in a docker container, then update your existing bash scripts write data to MQTT entities so HA can read the entities.
If you format the MQTT entities right, HA will automatically discover them as devices or sensors without you having to create custom MQTT sensors. That auto-discoverability format is a little finicky, but if you're comfortable with python I wrote (with a lot of recent improvement by Steffan Pankratz) a library that makes writing automatically discoverable entities easier.

My home assistant server is in my basement. My zwave and zigbee meshes were both having weird intermittent issues until I put the dongles on 10 foot long extension cables and attached them to the rafters above the server rack.
I made sure to place them so they were each almost directly underneath a powered device so that the first hop would only be about 3 feet.
Once I did that, the meshes stopped having any more weird issues.
