  1. It’s what’s for dinner

    Rojie asks:

Do you prefer chicken, beef, or seafood? Or are you vegan or vegetarian?

A question and a bonus question!

I prefer chicken, beef, and seafood, but only in their living form, not on a dinner plate.

And at this point I’m neither a vegetarian nor a vegan.

Vegetarianism stopped making sense to me a long time ago when I learned about lacto-vegetarians, ovo-vegetarians, and lacto-ovo vegetarians. To me, in my dull black and white world, you either ate animals or you didn’t. And not eating animals meant no milk, no cheese, no eggs.  But that’s just me.

Veganism was good, the rules were pretty clear cut, but it was just a label for me that meant I didn’t eat any animals, including milk, eggs, cheese. Or fish (sorry pescatarians). But I became put off by people who made it a political statement and who shamed other people for their personal diet choices. Shaming – without giving exact examples so I don’t inadvertently shame anyone – by using certain words, or body language, or images. Maybe it’s my dull black and white world again, but I don’t buy into the moral superiority of one way being the only way, and I don’t see any good coming from any form of shaming others, even if one thinks their cause is just.

Having said all that, I still won’t buy products tested on animals and I still don’t think humans are superior to animals, or any other creature sharing the planet, and I still think it would be a good idea for grocery stores to put small 10-inch color monitors above their meat cases, spaced maybe every five feet or so, and run loops of animals at the slaughterhouse. Meet your meat, you know? There’s nothing wrong with being a wise consumer.

So what’s my answer to the second question?

I don’t really have a label. If my diet is anything, it’s Whole Food Plant Based. That’s a broad term and it pretty much explains everything. And I’m not focused on 100% compliance or perfection as much as I used to be. I’m more interested in the nutrition and nutritional science in food so maybe I’m a nutritionarian?

I like to try and follow as best I can this advice:

Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants – Michael Pollan

  3. What a delicious Mediterranean meal!

Steven found me a great vegan halloumi recipe that I made last night and he put some on the BBQ for lunch. While not as firm as I would have liked (some escaped through the bars), the taste was excellent.

The plate also has some home grown tomatoes, topped with tofu ricotta with chili oil, balsamic vinegar and fresh herbs from our garden, red pepper, as well as home made potato salad, kale and some of the last remaining purslane.

    It was a great success.
The halloumi is made with tofu and cashews and the mayonnaise for the potato salad is made with silken tofu.

  7. Jerk Tofu

I haven't made this recipe in ages but remember it being really delicious.

I think I'll make it in the air fryer this time. And serve with wild rice and a green (Swiss chard?) and veggies. No avocado, I'm sad to say.
    Can't wait.

  8. Howdy,

Health column by Dr. Greg Feinsinger. Champion of Whole Food Plant Based Living and righteous person

"Unhealthy eating is the new tobacco. Food manufacturers take advantage of the dopamine effect. They hire scientists to figure out how to make their products more addictive to people, just like tobacco companies did a few decades ago with cigarettes."

  9. A really helpful video by Derek of Simnett Nutrition. on one of my favourite channels,. Although he is vegan himself, the tips about the selection and storage of fruits and vegetables will be of interest to anyone who eats real food. There's a great recipe shared on here, for a vegan 'cheese' crumble. It's at 6:07

  10. "Best Vegan Mozzarella Cheese"

I have been making this vegan cheese/ cheese sauce substitute for years and it's one of our favourites. My tweaks:
    Sub sunflower seeds for cashews
Add ½ cup nutritional yeast (+ more liquid)

I have portions of cooked potato, rice & yogurt weighed in bags in the freezer. As I pull out to thaw, I soak the nuts/seeds. Browns and melts nicely even without baking.

  11. Red lentil pizza crust.

This looks easy and apparently is really good for diabetics! (Just add healthy toppings, skip the cheese or use a dairy free version. You can make your own using the recipe linked in the crust recipe).

I know what we're having for supper tonight!

  12. One thing I've just realised... I've not asked anyone in almost 10 years... "so, what are you eating tonight?" This is because it will 99.999% of the time be met with a response that includes dead animals or products of animals (dead or alive). I think the last time I asked, some sort of 'lovely lean beef' from a 'local' butchers was involved in the reply, which i must have just said "oh, right". So, I just don't ask anymore. #govegan #vegan #wholefoodplantbased #veganproblems
