TWIL about the Parquet format which processes your columnar data (say a CSV) and pushes a bunch of column metadata (like min/max values) to the front of the file which allows fast short-circuiting of queries by reading a short block (say 1k) rather than the whole file (ours are ~12MB a go).
(Also compresses the data but that's a side benefit when you do have to scan the whole file.)
Took one of our Athena queries from ~1TB and 4 minutes down to ~65GB and 9 seconds. Which is a ludicrous gain for such an easy "convert this to that" step.

When you use the block syntax with Hash.new to define a default value, you lock yourself to only using the square bracket syntax for value lookup. The fetch method ignores the block, default, and default_proc.
This bit me hard this week, and my pair, @gd, got to watch me flounder on why fetch wasn’t getting the default value.
By the way, the Hash.new with a block is great for memoization of calculated or network lookup data.
