  1. TWIL about the Parquet format which processes your columnar data (say a CSV) and pushes a bunch of column metadata (like min/max values) to the front of the file which allows fast short-circuiting of queries by reading a short block (say 1k) rather than the whole file (ours are ~12MB a go).

(Also compresses the data but that's a side benefit when you do have to scan the whole file.)

Took one of our Athena queries from ~1TB and 4 minutes down to ~65GB and 9 seconds. Which is a ludicrous gain for such an easy "convert this to that" step.

Hey #chicago and other folks in #Illinios -- Here's another good witness slip to sign in support of the Pre Trial Success Act, which pairs with the pretrial fairness act to help our neighbors with court related services, actually intended on helping them. 6. When filling out a witness slip I always say representing self, but I could probably get my bike team to support some of these transit bills that @bikegridnow is advocating for. Would that make our slips have more sway?

  11. It's very confusing and frustrating that #chicago, #cookcounty and #illinois have so many levels of government making it hard to know who to hold accountable for parks, schools, mass transit, water/ sewers, streets and more. #twill #twil #hashtagTypo

  13. When you use the block syntax with Hash.new to define a default value, you lock yourself to only using the square bracket syntax for value lookup. The fetch method ignores the block, default, and default_proc.

This bit me hard this week, and my pair, @gd, got to watch me flounder on why fetch wasn’t getting the default value.

By the way, the Hash.new with a block is great for memoization of calculated or network lookup data.
